In the end they opted for a public park, well patrolled by anti-squirrel rangers. There was a nice gazebo and a hotel behind the park where the reception could be held.
Ian’s philosophy was to keep everything as simple as possible. Nikky, naturally, had different ideas, as did Kaity, whose flashes of insight usually came in the middle of the night, almost always contradicting whatever plans had been worked on so far.
“Kaity says we shouldn’t serve fish,” Nikky announced one night, showing up at Ian’s front door.
Ian had learned from hard experience not to ask why, but Nikky told him anyway.
“Kaity was reading this article about Japanese baseball.” Nikky commenced the explanation once they were tucked in side by side on the sofa.
“Baseball…yes,” he said drily. “And where else can you go after that in Kaity-Land except onto the topic of fish?”
In order to keep Kaity at bay, Ian finally developed a strategy that was a bit on the sneaky side.
Nathan was more than happy to go along, though he told Ian he owed him big-time for running interference, taking Kaity out for coffee whenever Ian needed to talk to Nikky alone.
Truth be told though, Nathan seemed to be enjoying himself a little too much for what was supposed to be a burden.
The night Nathan took Kaity off to teach her racquetball, ditching their usual game, Ian got suspicious.
“You should see how she plays,” Nathan marveled. “She takes the racquet and swings it in a circle with both hands. It’s crazy and totally useless but fun as hell. I would correct her but why deprive myself of watching her move around so much?”
According to Nikky, Kaity was talking nonstop about Nathan too. She kept claiming that he was a nuisance and way too immature but she seemed fixated on every detail.
“What if our best friends end up together because of this?” Ian speculated.
“Stranger things have happened,” Nikky concluded.
By the day of the wedding, Nathan and Kaity were still holding to their claim that nothing was going on between them but more than one observer had seen their eyes locking on one another over and over during the ceremony, especially when the minister got to the vows.
Whatever was going to happen, the pair would be on their own, at least for the next week or so. Nikky and Ian had other plans—a honeymoon consisting of some well-deserved time on the beach, totally flat and harmless.
That was just fine because Nikky and Ian were way more interested in horizontal activities than they were in any more standup adventures.
For now at least.
About the Author
Reese Gabriel is a born romantic with a taste for the edgier side of love. Having traveled the world and sampled many of the finer things, Reese now enjoys the greater simplicities—barefoot walks by the ocean, kisses under moonlight and whispers of passion in the darkness with that one special person.
Preferring to remain behind the scenes, cherished by a precious few, Reese hopes to awaken in the lives of many the possibilities of true love through stories of far off places and enchanted lives.
For the sake of love and hope and imagination, these stories are told. May they be enjoyed as much in the reading as in the writing.
Reese welcomes comments from readers. You can find Reese’s website and email address on the author bio page at www.ellorascave.com.
