My Kinda Song Page 27

by Lacey Black

Reaching down, I can’t help but move the papers around, mixing up the financial statements with the house plans. There. Take that, Christopher.

Leaving the mess on the counter, I head over to the drawer where we keep pot holders. Down at the bottom, hidden beneath the contents is a sheet of paper, neatly folded in half. I pull that sheet from its hiding spot, carefully opening it up and revealing the secret I stumbled upon only earlier this morning.

My breath still catches, my heart still stops, my world still shatters.

  How could he?

I read the report over and over again, wishing what I found weren’t true.

  But it is.

And it’s time for me to go.

I can’t stay, not anymore. Not when the man who vowed to love me, protect me, and give me everything I wanted in life was the biggest liar and fraud known to man.

Anger sweeps through me, just as it had the moment I found the paper poking out from under our bed. It had clearly been dropped, probably from his briefcase or something. It doesn’t matter though; the damage is done.

My life’s a mess, my dream in shambles.

But it won’t be for long.

  I’m taking back my life.

  Starting now.
