“I didn’t go there to kill her,” Featherton blurted. “I just wanted to destroy that damn pumpkin so I wouldn’t lose the contract. Beverly attacked me first with the hoe. I pushed her and she fell against the post and hit her head. I didn’t plan to kill her.”
Detective Briggs handcuffed Featherton and led him to the backseat of the car. He slammed the door shut and finally looked my direction. I braced for his angry lecture.
“I’ll just walk home from here,” I said quietly.
He looked at me for a long moment. “Good work, Miss Pinkerton.” He walked around, climbed into his car and drove off with the suspect slouched angrily in the backseat.
Chapter 37
Hot cocoa and a seat on the porch seemed like the perfect way to end a long day. I certainly hadn’t expected my first big occasion in the shop to be a funeral, but I was glad to be able to provide flowers for Beverly’s small service at Graystone Church. All of her neighbors came to say good-bye and support her sister, Beverly’s only living relative.
Nevermore rubbed back and forth along my legs as I gazed out at the dark sky. It was a fogless night and a blanket of stars twinkled like diamonds in a navy blue carpet. The cat’s head popped up at a sound. He trotted off to investigate.
Dash’s front door opened and closed. He walked out with Captain. They headed over to my front yard. Dash stopped in front of the steps. He was wearing one of his usual flannel shirts and a hint of a smile.
I held up my cup of cocoa. “I could make you one.”
“No thanks. Rumors have been swirling that you helped solve Beverly’s murder.”
“With a little help from my nose. I confess, it was very intriguing work. I’m beginning to think I missed my calling.”
He laughed. “Well, I’m sure you’ll find other intriguing ways to keep yourself busy. You seem like the kind of person who doesn’t like to just sit and relax.”
I lifted the cocoa again to show him he was wrong. “I like relaxing just fine, but I also like a bit of intrigue. In fact, I think now that this case is solved, I might delve into the Hawksworth Manor murder. Just for fun.”
He laughed again. “I get the feeling life around Port Danby is not going to be the same now that Lacey ‘Pink’ Pinkerton has moved to town.”
Lacey ‘Pink’ Pinkerton, the local flower shop owner, is thrilled to supply colorful flower arrangements for the Third Annual Food Fair being held in the Port Danby town square. But when one of the well-known but not so well-loved bloggers is found dead in her motel room, Lacey steps in to help Detective James Briggs solve the case. (Whether he likes it or not.)
