by Talty, Jen

“Do you know anything else about her?”

“Grew up in Brooklyn. Went to Colombia, lives near the school. She’s a copy editor by trade and writes novels as a hobby. Not published. One brother. Didn’t get his name. That’s it.” Josh stood in front of the big picture window that overlooked the lake. Specifically, the dock where he and Delaney just an hour ago had been laying on their backs, looking up at the stairs. Her blue sun dress showing off her firm toned legs. His fingers could still feel the silky softness of her skin. Had she not flirted with him from a distance, he would never have even thought about approaching her since he couldn’t bring himself to date, much less even have a meaningless fling, but she was that intriguing.

“I’ll see what I can dig up.”

“I’m having lunch with her tomorrow, so be discrete when texting me any information.”

“Do you always screen your dates?” Luke swiveled back and forth in the bar stool.

Josh turned and glared at his friend. “Wouldn’t you?”

“Speaking of that subject,” Luke said. “Any news about you Craypo and his goons?”

Josh shook his head, standing in front of the picture window, which was the kind of glass that prevented the outside world from staring inside your home. The only thing it lacked was the ability to stop a bullet. “He hasn’t left Manhattan. But that doesn’t mean he hasn’t sent someone—”

“You really think this chick is working for him?”

“I really hope not,” Josh said. “But I find it weird that less than a month after his release a girl from downstate hits on me. Let’s me take her down to the docks—”

“That doesn’t work on the girls from around here.”

“Doesn’t work on most girls.” Josh sat back on the sofa, still peering out the window at the dark lake. “Then she let me walk her home and now I’m taking her out for lunch. Don’t you find that odd?”

Luke laughed. “Dude, what’s odd is that you’re thinking twice about getting with a hot woman.”

“A woman from New York that I know nothing about.” Whose intention might not be hooking up, but putting a bullet in his head, just like the last woman he’d gotten involved with.

“If there is something to find out, I’ll unearth it, but no one would think less of you if you up and disappeared and I know you were given that option.”

  “I’m not running.”

“I don’t know man. If I were in your shoes, I’d run. The guy blames you for the death of his wife and kids.”

“It was his bomb that killed them.” But Josh might as well set the bomb off. He was the reason they were dead. He shouldn’t care about Nicki because she wouldn’t have cared if he were dead. But her two little boys watched behind horror filled eyes as their mother fired at the man that was going to pull them from the grips a crime filled existence. He squeezed his eyes close, forcing the memory to fade to black. “Find out what you can on Delaney. If she’s with Craypo, then we can deal with that. If she’s not associated, then I can just cut her loose.” No way would he get involved with someone he could actually fall for, giving Craypo another way to make Josh pay for what he’d done.

“If it's the latter, and she’s that hot, mind if I take her out and show her a go—”

  “I mind,” Josh said sharply.

Luke shot his arms out to the side. “Geez. Possessive over a girl you don’t even want.”

“I didn’t say I didn’t want her. Besides, she’s only here for a short time and—”

“That’s the point,” Luke said. “A hook-up. Just sex.”

Josh narrowed his gaze. “Keep your hands to yourself or I’ll have to mess up that pretty face of yours.”

Luke laughed. “I think you like her.”

“I think this conversation is over, so finish your beer so I can get some sleep.”

  “Yes boss.”
