He shakes his head. “I’m not like Jake.”

I look away to avoid his eye contact. “I feel so guilty about forcing you to make this choice.”

He takes my chin in his hand and turns my head to look back at him.

“Don’t feel guilty. I’m going to prove to you how committed I am to making this work.”

He gently pulls me into his arms. I close my eyes as I breathe in his scent. I have to have faith in him and in us. I need to believe that I’m making the right decision for my future and for this season in my life.

“I have a feeling things are just going to get better from here.”

  I smile. “Me, too.”

We spend the rest of the afternoon enjoying each other and this beautiful spring day.

  The End

Take a sneak peek at the last book in this series . . . Return to Summer

I’m fanning myself with my menu. Summer has arrived, and as much as I love it, I’m never prepared for the heat waves. As I look through my planner, I get excited. the next few months are going to be really busy, but I love it. It’s been quite a year for me, and even as difficult as things got, I wouldn’t change anything.

The most exciting thing happening is that after several months of searching, I found a new apartment. The plan is to move next month, assuming nothing else gets in the way. Unfortunately, little things seem to keep popping up that make me wonder if it’s not a good idea to move, but I adore the place and the location is perfect.

The sound of my phone ringing distracts me from my thoughts of moving, and I smile when I see it’s my best friend, Angie, calling.

“I finally get to talk to a real live person,” I say sarcastically.

She giggles. “Me, too. I can’t believe I haven’t even been gone two months yet.”

Angie recently moved to Florida. It was unexpected, so we’re all still trying to get used to it (me especially).

“I know. It feels like an eternity since we’ve been able to talk.”

Angie and I have been so busy, and other than texting, we haven’t been able to catch up.

“Well, you’re missing a brutal heat wave right now.”

She starts to laugh. “You don’t want to talk about a heat wave. It’s ninety-eight degrees right now, and the only break we will get is when the afternoon thunderstorms roll in.”

I have to admit that sounds miserable, but I know when winter comes I will be wishing I was there with her.

“What are you up to?” she asks.

  “I’m waiting on Helena . . . again.”

Helena is one of my clients. I, well, my company, Summer Interiors, has been redecorating her apartment. She also happens to be my boyfriend’s ex-wife, but that’s another story. Thankfully, I was able to remove the shrine she had up in her living room of their life together. I admit I used some serious reverse psychology, and for some reason, she fell for it.

  “How’s that going?” Angie asks.

“Surprisingly well. She’s been much easier to work with than I expected.”

This is true. I struggled with the decision of working with her, especially after one of her and Alexander’s best friends told me they were soul mates and would get back together eventually. We had a few obstacles, but she’s actually been one of my easier clients.

  “That’s good. And how’s Alexander?”

I smile to myself. I feel like a giddy teenager when I think about him. We’ve been together since October, and despite some rocky times, things are really good right now.

  “He’s great.”

  “And Melanie?”

I sigh. Melanie (Alexander’s assistant) would be the one area of our relationship that isn’t great.

“She’s still here,” I say through gritted teeth.

“How can that be? After everything.”

I continue to fan myself and take a sip of my water.

“Because she begged him to let her stay. She swore she would never meddle in our lives again and this was the best job she ever had. She laid it on thick, tears and all, and he fell for it. But, I have to admit she’s stuck to her word . . . so far anyway.”

She groans. “Well, keep your eye on her.”

I snort. “Oh, trust me, Melanie is not going to make any more trouble for us.”

I’m so involved in my conversation that I don’t notice Helena has finally arrived.

“Oh dear, I wouldn’t be so sure of that,” Helena says adamantly. “Melanie is toxic, and you need to be careful.”

I quickly get off the phone while Helena sits down. I’m not surprised by her reaction to Melanie, there’s no love lost between them.

“I was just talking to my best friend, and she asked me about Melanie. I know there’s a lot of bad blood between you.”

  She folds her arms.

“You don’t know the full story, do you?”

I give her a curious look. “About you and Melanie?”

She raises her eyebrows. “I think it’s about time for you to hear what really happened with my marriage to Xander. Then, you’ll fully understand who Melanie is and who you’re dealing with.”
