That Which Was Lost Page 9

“I can’t stay with my mother for too long. We never see eye to eye on anything.”

“I’ll take you out for dinner or for the day when things get too bad.”

  “Would you?”

Crowley glanced over at her and smiled.

Myra knew Crowley was one man she could rely on; he had always been the same. She wondered what the future might hold for the two of them.

For now, she wanted to feel safe back at Ettie and Elsa-May’s little old house. The house had no electricity, no television, and she had to sleep on the couch, but it was a house filled with love and safety. It was the same safe feeling that she had gotten after she had prayed for the first time in years. She knew the safe feeling was the peace of God, which passes understanding. She took a deep breath as the same calm and peace filled her entire being.

  “You all right, Myra?”

She took a sideways glance at Crowley. “Yes, I am, for the first time, in a long time.”

Peter Davis had refused to give his real name when he was arrested two days ago. He had relented one day ago so he could secure a lawyer. Crowley immediately set about to find out as much as he could about the man who had caused Myra so much pain.

The fax machine in Crowley’s office made a whirling noise. Since he was about to leave for the day, he stood by the fax machine in case it was something important. He picked up the pages and read them as they spilled out of the machine.

Crowley read that Ethan Brown, who had posed as Peter Davis and Aiden Addison, was a fifty eight year old man born in Baltimore. His father was still alive but hadn’t seen Ethan in twenty years. Ethan’s two siblings and his mother were deceased. Ethan was trained in accounting and had no prior convictions. Breathing out heavily, Crowley found it hard to believe a man such as he did not have any priors. Now that the department knew his real identity, they had a better chance of tracking down false identities he might have used in the past. Crowley silently vowed he would make it his mission to find out who else this man had conned.

Looking at his watch, Crowley saw that it was nearly six. It would be about dinnertime at Ettie and Elsa-May’s house. He was sure that Myra would want to know the real name of the man to whom she had been married. A smile twigged at the corners of his mouth as he swung his trench coat over his shoulders. He would soon see Myra again.
