The Devil's Colony Page 27

by Bill Schweigart

Finally, I need to thank you, the reader. I’ve lived with these characters in my head and my heart for five years now, and it means the world to me to share them with you. If you’ve been reading since The Beast of Barcroft or Northwoods, I am truly touched. If you just started with The Devil’s Colony, you are likely very confused and I promise to label these things better in the future.

As I mentioned, I began writing this series in January 2012 with no plan and nearly a year to the day after my father passed. The Beast of Barcroft is a breezy little creature feature, but to me it’s about a guy who misses his dad. And I still do of course, but it wasn’t long before the characters took me by the hand and I began to have fun, getting pulled along on their adventures. When I began The Devil’s Colony in 2015, their last ride, I feared sending them into a massive encampment of white supremacists would seem too far-fetched, even for a series about mythological creatures. Today it doesn’t seem outlandish at all, so I’ve never been more eager to send my diverse band of characters out into the world to fight monsters.
