Migrant Hearts Page 14

by Isabella Abad

"It's your turn, Victoria, you're taking her," she shouted as she pursued her.

Soon they threw themselves at his side, exhausted by the races.

"How much longer will we stay, Daddy?"

"All you want, precious." We are on vacation and will return to Madrid in a week. We have plenty of time for everything you want.

She smiled and he could not stop his eyes from getting excited. It made him feel so complete to see them sharing time and love.

Victoria had managed to bring him back to his real temper, sweeping with remorse, loneliness and sorrow. Since he had moved in with them a year ago everything had changed to improve.

At first Titrit was disconcerted by the idea, but then she saw that he wanted that more than anything in the world. If she had refused, the process would have been much slower and he would have respected it.

But she missed her mom, and although Victoria was not, she certainly replaced part of it. The girl liked to feel part of an armed family again, that made her more confident.

It was easier to feel protected when there were two who protected her dreams and brought her out of nightmares. The difficulties she experienced at school fared better when she could tell them both.

The biggest change was experienced by Victoria, of course. She had to get a new job, moved from her close affections, coupled with what both she and Titrit had been building. Little by little her house became a home.

The difficulties that had arisen had been overcome, but they had not been significant. The peace he had not had for years now reigned in his life.

"What do you think, my love?"

"In us, in our history," he said, looking at her and brushing her hair off her face. It has been a long journey and the roads were difficult. And here we are, building our home.

"Stop thinking about history and think about our present. We have been growing as a family and our jobs are improving as well, fortunately. It is admirable how fast you have incorporated yourself into technology and the digital world. Promotion is a fair reward for your constant effort.

"I've discovered a world that I'm passionate about, Victoria. Computers and the Internet provide thousands of opportunities for growth. I have a project in mind, but I'm going to let it mature. Time will tell whether it is viable or not.

She looked up at him smiling and gave him a sandy kiss.

"You do not stop thinking about work. Do not get ambitious that we do not need, "she joked.

"I just want to improve our lives. And I like challenges. Everything you can manage will help our little girl in the future. And to those to come ...

She smiled. They were thinking of extending the family and he knew that for Victoria it was a dream that she wanted to realize. He also bets more children, who could be born and fill their lives.

He could not stop the tenderness from overflowing. Victoria was an exceptional woman, the best that you could have. This did not go to the detriment of Dassim, who had been a formidable companion and had given himself and his daughter in body and soul, until the sacrifice. She had been a friend and a companion for an incredible and terrible crusade.

But Victoria was the love of his life, his other half. Despite how corny this might sound, I felt it. He hugged her tightly and stood together as Titrit collected shells. They sipped every moment of life they had undertaken with the thirst of one who knows absences and distances.

-Dad? Victoria? What if we play again?

The two of them sat up and hugged her. It was a magnificent afternoon and the breeze only brought the noises of nature.

"That must be paradise," thought Usem. "Full of love".
