“What? I love this taco dip,” I said.

She pulled on the arm of our visitor, and August fell into view, his arms filled with a gaming console and several games.

“Hey, Augie,” I managed to push out.

He glanced at Lila, then stepped meekly into the kitchen and held out the console as if he wanted me to take it. I cocked an eyebrow.

“I’m going to go slip into a nightgown. August, it’s good to see you. Please do come by often,” Lila said, then patted his cheek affectionately.

“I’ll be up in a minute, baby,” I called after her.

August continued to jab the console in my direction.

I put my drink and the cold taco dip on the counter beside the box of bricks aka cook books. Then I folded my arms over my dark-purple long-sleeved shirt and leveled a cool look at August. The kid swallowed roughly a time or two.

“It’s a housewarming gift.” He extended the console to me again.

I remained where I was, arms crossed, legs planted like a couple of oak trees.

“And sort of an apology,” he muttered as his cheeks pinked.

I chuckled at the sort of apology. Was this kid ever certain of anything? “You don’t really need to apologize, Augie. I know it’s embarrassing to be told someone you like doesn’t feel the same way.”

“No, I needed to hear it. You’re right. I do need to get out more.” His brown eyes timidly rose from my boots to my face.

I gave him a questioning look.

“Really, I know I have to try to mingle a little; it’s just not really my thing. We didn’t do clubs in Marten’s Bay.”

“I’d be happy to give you a few addresses. Nothing over the top, just a couple nice bars where you can socialize with gay men,” I explained as I took the console from him.

He stacked a couple of new games on top of the system while nodding steadily.

“Maybe I can make that a resolution, you know?”

His sight fell from me to my boots again. I suspected Augie would have to be dragged into a dance club kicking and screaming.

“Well, anyway, that was all I wanted to do. Give you and Lila a gift and say I was sorry for acting like a jerk. I really did know you love Lila. I think I was kind of crushing on you because you were safe.”

“Ah, well, I can see that. So, do you know how to set that up?”

His puppy dog eyes met mine and he bobbed his head. I heard the floor over us creak as Lila moved around in our bedroom.

“Think you can come by tomorrow and hook it up? Maybe hang around for a drumstick or something, unless you’re going home?”

“No, I’m, ah…no, I’m not going home. Not enough travel time. Yeah, I like drumsticks.” And there it was – that perky beagle look had returned to his face.

“Good,” I said, then laid the console on the kitchen table. “Lila ordered a meal for fifteen people from the diner by the lake where Vic and Dan got married. If you come, that will be four people here. Four.” I held up four fingers.

August choked out a laugh as I led him to the front door, my arm now hanging over his shoulder. I opened the door, then gave his neck a short squeeze. He stepped out into the cold air. A couple of wayward snowflakes drifted in.

I leaned a shoulder against the door. “So we’ll see you tomorrow around four? You need a ride home?”

“Yeah, for sure I’ll be here at four. Oh, no, I’m good. I kind of bought a car last week, “he said, waved, then jogged down the stairs. “Isn’t she hot?” he asked as he ran his hand lovingly over the hood of a metallic blue Mustang, circa 1969.

“That’s one beautiful lady!” I shouted, and got a wide grin and another wave.

When he cranked her over, she roared like a hungry lion. August may have left a little rubber on my new street when he took off. Good on him for it.

“I assume you were talking about me when you mentioned a beautiful lady?”

I turned from watching Augie’s taillights to look at my gal. Something slinky, sexy and as white as the snow that covered our spiffy new front yard sheathed her luscious body. She was artfully posed to entice, and brother, was it working.

“Baby, there ain’t no lady in New York State prettier than you,” I assured her as I closed the door and pulled her into my arms.

A knowing smile parted her blood-red lips as her hands moved over my upper arms.

  “Give me some sweetness.”

My beautiful lady was more than willing to accommodate.
