“What’s your first class?”
I looked down at my class schedule for the fiftieth time and then back over to the guy standing behind me at the coffee shop, which happened to be strategically placed in the middle of campus.
“Intro to Journalism. You?”
The cute boy chuckled and held up his own schedule for me to see. “I’m not stalking, I promise.”
I squinted and inspected his paper. He really wasn’t stalking. Intro to Journalism 101. “I guess not. Unless…”
“Unless I printed this schedule just to make it look like I wasn’t stalking, which I didn’t.” The look that crossed his face was priceless and highlighted his mint-green eyes. Even if he was a stalker, I wouldn’t have minded one bit. He was kind of hot.
I didn’t know what else to say, so I just smiled and turned back around, getting ready to get my hands on my morning caffeine fix.
“Next,” a young blonde barista said, a bit too loudly since I was standing right in front of her, and indicated it was finally my turn.
“Yes, I’ll take a Venti vanilla latte.” I smiled and was just about to hand her a ten when my ‘stalker’ piped up.
“Make that two, and it’s on me.”
Before I could protest, he was handing over a card and gave me a million-dollar smile. Maybe college wasn’t going to be so bad. A girl could get used to this. “Thanks, but you really didn’t need to do that.”
“My pleasure. Maybe we can walk to class together, you know, to make up for the stalker comment?”
I laughed, and it felt good. I didn’t know why but I was a freaking ball of nerves on my first day of college. This was something I’d been looking forward to since I was a little girl and it was finally here.
“Sure, why not.”
The pretty barista cleared her throat and pointed at me. “Name?”
“Oh, um, Nikki.”
I watched her scribble my name across a cup and then hand it off to a guy standing next to her. “And yours?”
I couldn’t help but hear the flirtatious vibe that was directed at my new escort. “Chad.”
“Thanks, Chad.” And with a wink she wrote his name in huge bubble letters with a little heart next to it.
Hmm, so I wasn’t the only one who found Chad attractive. Not only was he good looking, but he had a hint of familiarity about him. I shook that thought out of my mind and decided maybe I just wanted him to look familiar. “Well, really. Thank you.” I didn’t know what else to say. Being a college student who was currently job searching had its setbacks. Like not much money.
“Really, my pleasure.”
We both stood off to the side and waited for our lattes. An awkward moment led me to do the thing that I never could control. My mouth. Whenever I became nervous or was in a room full of people I didn’t know, word diarrhea came out of my mouth.
“So, journalism, huh? Are you wanting to work for a newspaper? Freelance? Magazine? Or are you thinking you’ll want to do something online?”
Chad chuckled and motioned his head to our drinks that were sitting patiently on the counter. “Hold that thought. I’ll go grab our drinks.”
I could feel my cheeks blush, and I was surprised by how attracted I was to Chad. I had only been on campus for a little over a week, and I was already so different from the inexperienced girl who stepped foot here. A virgin who was hopelessly awkward with boys. Now look at me. My roommate, Lexi, had persuaded me to go out with her this past weekend, and with that I decided it was finally time to give up my V-card. I had been holding on to it for a reason that was unknown to me. I smiled at the memory of my rendezvous with a hot guy whose stare could melt your panties right off. He was history, though, because Chad was my age, and my virginity-taking fling ended up being a total ass. I could tell, however, that Chad also liked what he saw. My mystery man was in the past, along with my virginity.
“Here you go, Nikki. Do you want to walk to class together?”
“That sounds nice.” I smiled at Chad as we headed out of the coffee shop.

“So, do you know anything about our professor?”
I shook my head and took a sip of my heavenly latte. “I don’t.” I looked again at our schedule and read his name. Professor G. Mitchell.
Chad took a drink of his own coffee and pointed to the left, which I assumed was where our lecture hall was located. I was glad at that moment that he’d asked me to walk with him. I probably would be lost by now. “I have heard a little. I guess he’s the new teacher on campus. Some bigshot from New York City who’s doing a little ‘pay it forward.’ He went to school here and is friends with the dean. My father said he’s been very successful in his career and recently had a book published.”
My eyebrows shot up, and I couldn’t help but be impressed. “That sounds really amazing, actually.” I pictured some guy in his mid-40s, holding open doors for our future.
I snuck a look again over at Chad and suddenly cursed myself for not trying harder with my appearance. No, I didn’t want to become some hussy now that I was at college, but how was I supposed to help it when these good-looking guys were there for the taking? I reached up and felt my large bun, which held all of my hair on the top of my head. I was wearing my glasses, having deciding that my contacts could wait for another morning. Despite my less than polished look, Chad was doing all these nice things for me.
“Here we are.” I smiled at Chad as he held open the door for me. A girl could get used to that.
“Thanks,” I said sweetly and started up a large flight of stairs. If there was one thing for sure, it was that I would probably be in the best shape of my life in college with all this walking and stair stepping.
Chad walked by my side and took each step in stride with me. When we finally made it to the top, I was a little out of breath. It looked like I needed to get my running routine back in action.
“So, don’t feel like you need to sit by me when we get to class.”
I laughed and playfully shoved his shoulder. I liked this Chad guy. He made m
e laugh, which was actually a hard quality for me to find in a guy.
This was my first class on my first day of college, and I’m not going to lie when I say that it was nice knowing someone when I stepped through the steel doors.
I looked around the room and noticed that most of the seats were already filled, but I spotted empty chairs together in the fifth or sixth row of the large lecture hall. I was warned that these intro college courses could have a few hundred students in them. I was okay with that, but I really didn’t feel like sitting that close to the front.
“Hey, there are two right down there.” Chad saw them as well, and as we headed to our new seats, I hoped that I would be able to blend into the background.
“Perfect,” I said in almost a whisper, trying not to let Chad know that I could have sat solo in the back.
We made our way through the row and found our new spot for the next four months. I looked over to my right and heard two girls talking about our soon-to-be professor.
“My friend Samantha told me that he’s fucking hot. Seriously, like totally edible.”
“I’m glad I signed up for Mr. Mitchell. Maybe he’ll take me as his TA.”
The girl with the short brown hair laughed and scooted closer to her friend. “Even though they don’t usually take freshmen as TAs, it’s my new mission.”
“Oh, you’re on, bitch.” They both laughed and hunched closer together, making it harder to hear their conversation.
When I made eye contact with Chad, I realized he must have heard their conversation as well, because he mouthed the word ‘great’ in my direction.
I rolled my eyes and thought how silly those girls sounded. That was, until Mr. Mitchell walked through the door leading to the front of the classroom.
Holy. Freaking. Shit. Mr. Mitchell?
I reached down and grabbed my syllabus, glancing over my class information. “Mr. Mitchell. Professor G. Mitchell?”
“Nikki, are you okay?” Chad asked and looked at me with curiosity.
“Garren,” I whispered and shoved my paper back into my bag.
“Do you know him?”
I waved Chad off and decided I could do one of two things. One, stay in class and try to pretend I didn’t know Garren Mitchell, or two, get the hell out of there.
“Good morning, class. My name is Garren Mitchell, and I’ll be teaching your Intro to Journalism class.”
I knew all the color drained out of my face because Mr. Garren Mitchell, my college professor, was none other than my virginity snatcher in the flesh.
Chapter Two
Nine Days Earlier
“Nikki, just put the damn dress on and get your hot little ass out here!”
I stopped and looked at myself in the mirror and assessed my new image. I looked like a hooker. A blonde, big-boobed, ready-to-be-fucked hooker.
“I look ridiculous, Lexi! I am not going out in this.” I marched out of the bathroom, and I knew this was going to be my outfit for the evening when I saw Lexi’s reaction.
“Are you kidding me? That’s perfect!”
I sighed and looked at her matching outfit. The only difference was she was wearing a black, barely-there little number, and I was wearing a fire-engine red, tight as hell, low-cut, ass-hanging-out dress. If you could call it that. “I better not run into any future classmates at this place. This is not the image I want to create for myself my freshman year.”
I was starting college at the University of Columbus, and I didn’t want to be known as the college skank. I mean, I knew plenty of girls who dressed like this who weren’t skanks. In fact, many of them were my friends in high school, but I wasn’t majoring in journalism to have my future shattered before I even started.
Lexi told me to do a twirl and started whistling. “Who knew you had that smoking hot body under all those clothes.”
I rolled my eyes and did a little curtsy for her. “Yeah, well, you’re only seeing it tonight. After this, it’s hello normal clothes.”
Lexi just happened to be my new dorm mate. I knew when I first met her last week that we were going to get along great. I’ll admit she scared me a little, but her wild personality was a perfect match to my quiet, introverted style. I needed someone like her to set a little fire under me, to take me out of the perfect little box I’d been living in.
“Your V-card is definitely going away tonight. And I’ve told you this a million times: we’re going to a club an hour away. No one will be partying there. I promise.” She crossed her heart and pretended to stick a needle, or something, in her eye.
“I still can’t believe you’ve talked me into this. I don’t think it’s a big deal I’m a virgin. I’ve never had time for a boyfriend, and I want to wait, you know, until I find the one, or I thought I did.”
Lexi threw her head back and started laughing hysterically. “Oh, my God! I never thought girls like you really existed. I always figured nerds like you in high school were actually the biggest freaks in bed. You proved me wrong.”
I sighed and took another look at myself in our full-length mirror. I had to admit, I looked nothing like my usual self. My long blonde hair was curled in beautiful waves that cascaded down my back, and my legs looked much longer in six-inch heels, which Lexi insisted I wore. The red dress—God knew where she got it at—was like nothing I’d had ever worn before. I sighed and thought about our earlier discussion. When Lexi found out that I was still indeed a virgin, she treated me like a pink unicorn. I told her that it was something that I had never really thought about, but secretly I really had. I wanted to get rid of it, to get it out of the way so it wasn’t such a big deal with guys. Of course I had boys in high school who made it their mission to deflower me, but none of them did it for me.
“You’re right. I want to do this. Lexi, let’s go find me a man.” And when I said man, I meant it. I didn’t want some young punk who would shotgun screw me. I wanted someone who knew what the hell they were doing.
“Perfect. Let’s go get laid, baby.”
I still couldn’t believe I was going to do this, but the few shots of whisky I’d already had were taking the edge off.
“Mike is going to drop us off on the way to his parents’ house. He said that we could crash there if we needed to, and I promise I didn’t tell him anything about our plan tonight.”
I gave her a suspicious look, but for some strange reason, I already trusted her. I knew she didn’t say anything.
“Well, what are we waiting for?”
* * *
When I heard the techno music pulsing as we pulled up to the club Lexi had chosen, I started to feel a little uneasy. I blamed it on the alcohol coursing through my system, but I knew it was because I never in a million years would have pictured myself doing something like I was about to do. However, I pushed those feelings aside and made my final decision. Tonight was going to be the night. I was going to give my virginity away, and I was going to be free of it. Maybe that would help me find an actual boyfriend, one who wasn’t so obsessed about popping my cherry.
“Let’s do this.”
We waved goodbye to Mike, our new friend from campus that I was pretty sure had the hots for Lexi. I mean, who in the hell would drive two random girls an hour away, just so they could party at a club without inviting you along?
When we stepped out of the car, I heard a few whistles coming from the long line that wrapped around the side of the club. “It’s packed,” I whispered into Lexi’s ear.
“Look at us, we’ll get in for sure.” She wiggled her eyebrows at me and grabbed my wrist, pulling me toward the abnormally huge beast of a man standing by the entrance to Club 21.
“IDs,” the man grumbled and snatched our fake IDs out of our hands.
I tried to look indifferent, like this was an every night occurrence, but inwardly I was freaking the hell out. I had never used a fake ID before, but Lexi assured me that the guy who made them for us was the real deal. I had to admit, they looked damn good. Even though my name w
as Simone and I was a twenty-two-year-old from California. Lexi told me it went along with my long blonde hair.
The freakishly large bouncer held up a light to our cards and eyed them carefully. I had a feeling he was going to bust us, I just knew it. Then I would have to start over on my plan for the evening.
“Go ahead, ladies. Have fun.”
Lexi and I both tried to keep our cool, but when we passed the entrance we jumped up and down, screaming and hugging each other.
“I can’t believe that worked! I mean, I can, look at us, but fuck yeah! We’re going to party hard. Let’s go find you a man.”
I smiled at my new friend and couldn’t have agreed more. We were going to party, but as we stepped into the club that was filled with sweaty bodies, grinding and rubbing against each other, I wasn’t sure if I was really going to go through with my plan.
“Nikki, quit thinking. Let go of your prim and proper self for one night and enjoy yourself. You don’t have to do anything you don’t want to, but I think it would do you some good to relax and be Simone for a night,” Lexi shouted over the loud music and smiled at me brightly.
She was right. I did need to relax. I’d always been under my parents’ thumb, telling me exactly how to think and act since I was a little girl. They would have freaked if they saw me standing in a nightclub at eighteen in a skintight red dress. I laughed at the thought and knew tonight was the night.
“You’re right. Let’s go get a drink. I’m ready for this.”
Lexi grinned wickedly at me and pulled me over to the packed bar, easily pushing our way through to the front of the line.
Just before Lexi ordered, a really good-looking guy next to us asked if he could buy us a drink. I looked at him and knew he was exactly Lexi’s type. Mid-twenties, dark hair, dark eyes, and a tattoo that peeked out where his shirt met his neck.
“Well, if you insist, we’re drinking whisky tonight. Two shots please.” She smiled her most seductive smile, which I’m sure she was wasting because by the way that guy was eyeing her chest, she could have said anything and he would have left with her in an instant.
