  “The police have a procedure that they have to follow,” she said in a calm voice used because calm was needed in this situation, and he needed to have someone steady to hold on to as loved ones of lost children particularly has to have. “I don’t. That’s why I can work faster. They also don’t have my special little tool at their disposal.”

  As she said that, she saw that he looked relieved. As if he finally arrived at the moment when he believed she would really help him, and that everything would really turn out well for his little niece. Something in her chest constricted. He really cared so much for that child.

  But of course he did, a voice in her protested. He’s only been averse to you. And anyway, they mutually loathed each other. You’ve more than given him enough reason to grieve offending you. Or breaking your heart. All in all, he was a neat brother to Suzanne. He was putty in her hands. And just that was enough to know he would be an adoring uncle to his niece.

  “Don’t worry, Hunter. I’ll find her. Now, tell me everything you know that isn’t here in this newspaper article.”

  Hunter eagerly nodded his head. “I’ll tell you everything that I know.”
