Freaky Hearts Page 27

Kade shifted his eyes to the nervous-looking woman and hopped to his feet. “Can I help you? This area is off limits to guests.”

“I’m here to talk to her.” Lorelei pointed at me, her expression serious. “The golem is gone.”

I stilled, surprised. “I wondered if you knew about it,” I mused. “I figured you had to be hiding something given the fact that you own the property where the cabin is located. You’re Brehem’s descendent. Did you know what he was doing?”

“I knew he was still out there,” Lorelei replied. “I had no idea that he was the one taking the kids.”

  “When did you find out?”

“Just now. When the golem dissipated I was imbued with the knowledge he accumulated over the years.”

  “What are you?”

“What are you?” Lorelei shot back, her eyes flashing.

“I’m Romani with a side of psychic.” I saw no reason to lie. “And the rumors about your ancestors forming their own coven are true. Only a witch could muster the magic to create a golem. Actually, only a full coven could muster enough energy to do it correctly.”

Lorelei smirked. “I might have a bit of witch in my blood. I’m more than that, though.”

“We all are,” Naida said, her eyes thoughtful as they roamed Lorelei’s face. “You should’ve told us what was going on. We could’ve ended things sooner if you had.”

“I didn’t know what was going on,” Lorelei pointed out. “I knew that Brehem was still active. I had no idea that a spirit could possess a man. You might think I’m naïve, but we’re a bit isolated in these parts. I didn’t know the truth of everything until a few minutes ago. I swear it.”

“Well, it’s over,” Naida said, shaking her head. “You can move on and use the property for something else … although I don’t know what. The salt will take a generation to clear.”

“That property is cursed,” Lorelei said. “It always was. I don’t know what I’ll do with it, but I’m genuinely thankful and relieved that you eradicated the threat. Out of curiosity, though, what will happen to the possessed man?”

“He wasn’t guilty, so he’ll go on with his life,” I answered. “His memory might have to be modified a bit. I have no idea how our boss will explain him waking up in the woods. The good news is that the danger is gone. The property doesn’t have to be monitored any longer.”

“And that is a relief.” Lorelei flashed a smile. “I’m sorry we picketed you. If it’s any consolation, I didn’t realize you were a force of good. I assumed you were evil. That’s on me.”

“Most people aren’t one thing,” I supplied. “We’re not one thing. You’re certainly not one thing.”

“It was a hard lesson, but I’ve learned it.” Lorelei flashed a pretty smile that lit her face. “What happens now? Will you stay?”

“We’re nomadic people,” I replied. “We’ll leave before the dawn and move on to our next location.”

  “Will you hunt monsters there?”

  “There are monsters everywhere.”

Lorelei nodded. “I guess there are,” she said after a beat, shifting her eyes to the far-off tree line where Max and Raven were saying goodbye to Ashburn. “Will he ever know?”

“No. He’s not a danger now. He was only a danger because of what was done to him. He’s a good man.”

“I hope you’re right.” Lorelei sucked in a breath before mustering a smile. “Well, I should probably be going. I promise to clear out the protesters before the end of the night. I figure you deserve a bit of peace before hitting the road.”

“That would be great,” Kade said, slipping his arm around my shoulders. “We definitely need the peace.”

We watched Lorelei leave in silence before I shifted my gaze to Kade. “It’s been a busy day. What do you want to do now?”

Kade arched an eyebrow. “How does a nap sound?”

  I grinned. “What about work?”

“Melissa is running your tent and I put Luke in charge of security before I took off after you. He wasn’t happy about being separated from the search party, but we didn’t have many options. That means we’re officially on vacation for the afternoon.”

“That sounds intriguing. Where do you want to go?”

Kade’s smile was impish as he pointed toward my trailer. “There’s a vast world to explore, but for tonight I only want to be with you.”

“I think I can live with that.”

“That’s good, because we’re starting an entirely new adventure tomorrow,” Kade said. “I’m glad we’re doing it together.”

  “That makes two of us.”

And finally, under a bright sun, life made sense again. It was a new beginning for all of us.

  About the Author

I want to thank everyone who takes the time to read my novels. I have a particular brand of humor that isn’t for everyone – and I know that.

If you liked the book, please take a few minutes and leave a review. An independent author does it all on their own, and the reviews are helpful. I understand that my characters aren’t for everyone, though. There’s a lot of snark and sarcasm in my world – and I know some people don’t like that.

Special thanks go out to Heidi Bitsoli and Phil VanHulle for correcting the (numerous) errors that creep into a work of fiction.

If you’re interested in my future works, follow me on Facebook, Twitter or join my mailing list. I do not believe in spam. I only announce new releases or free promotions.

This is a work of fiction. Names, characters, businesses, places, events and incidents are either the products of the author’s imagination or used in a fictitious manner. Any resemblance to actual persons, living or dead, or actual events is purely coincidental.
