Joseph pressed his shoulder to Crystal’s. “Watch this, sweetie.” He quickly explained what the eight young women had planned to do. “Last year it was the boys, and this year it’s their turn.”
Crystal laughed until her sides hurt when the young women in matching costumes revealing a prudent amount of skin twerked to Beyoncé’s “Crazy In Love.” Everyone laughed, gyrated and sang along while their mothers shook their heads in exasperation. The DJ segued into hits made popular by Florida-based artists Flo Rida, Pitbull and Jason Derulo.
Shedding her veil and stilettos, Crystal danced continuously until it came time for her to cut the cake. Instead of tossing her bouquet, she handed it to landscape architect Eden Spencer. “You’re next,” she whispered, pressing her cheek to the tall, pretty woman with the dimpled smile.
Joseph tapped her arm to get her attention. “It’s time we go in and change. We have to board the jet in an hour.” They’d planned to honeymoon at one of the family’s vacation resorts in the Caribbean. It would be the second time in two months Crystal would leave her daughter with her overly indulgent grandparents.
The past year had become one she would remember forever. She’d reunited with the love of her life, her parents had reconciled, Merry had met her paternal grandparents and she and Joseph had shared a momentous Christmas and New Year’s with their extended family and friends. And she looked forward to the coming months during which she would be kept busy decorating her new home.
Crystal never could’ve imagined, when checking into the Beaumont House, that the man occupying the neighboring penthouse suite would make her his wife and the mother of his child, but not necessarily in that order.
Reaching for her husband’s hand and standing on tiptoe in her bare feet, she touched her lips to his. “Te amo,” she whispered in Spanish. Joseph had begun teaching her Spanish, beginning with words of love.
Joseph made love to his wife with his eyes. “Y yo a ti, mi amor y mi corazón.”
They managed to slip into the house through a side door undetected, to change, and when they reemerged they were ready to begin the year anew as husband, wife, father and mother.
