“Yeah, I think so…”
“Good, because you saved us. All of us. And you looked freaking badass doing it, too.” I leaned forward and pressed my lips against hers, unable to stop myself. My wolf gave a victorious howl that sent goose bumps rippling across my skin and I laughed.
“You think so?”
“I know so.”
“That was pretty badass,” April insisted.
I slung my arm over her shoulder and steered us out of the alley. “So, did Cole have a car waiting?”
“He did,” one of the other wolves said. He pointed to a dark SUV with tinted windows idling in the road.
“Awesome. I’m exhausted and I think it would be great to check out our new home.”
Ava glanced at me from the corner of her eye. “So, you’re saying you’re still going to join the guard?”
“Damn right,” I nodded. “You know I’m willing to guard your body any day.”
Her head tipped back as laughter rushed past her lips. It was the best sound I’d heard in a while, because it was real. She wasn’t hiding behind fear or darkness anymore. Ava had let light inside her and I liked to think that I had something to do with it. I squeezed her close and let out a long sigh of relief when she laid her head on my shoulder.
“I think this could be the start of a beautiful life,” she whispered.
I pulled her knuckles to my lips and placed a kiss there. “I think so too,”
This was our fresh start, and we damn sure had deserved one.
I tossed up a thank you toward the sky for letting her walk back into my life. She’d filled the broken places inside of me and I would spend every day for the the rest of my life striving to make sure she remained as happy as she deserved to be.
“So after we’re settled in with the coven, think we should find a kid to adopt?” I asked as we slipped into the backseat of Cole’s SUV.
“Damn, you move fast. Don’t you, boy?” Tex chuckled.
“Hey. We have ten years to make up for,” I snapped.
“We can think about it,” Ava said, ignoring Tex. “If it’s not something you really want, we don’t have to.”
“Would it make you happy?”
“Being with you makes me happy,” she whispered. “A kid would make me happy too, but as long as I’m with you, nothing else matters.”
“You’ll always be with me, Ava, always.”
“Then I’ll always be happy.” She brushed her lips against mine, igniting a fiery warmth inside me. It circled my heart before expanding, and I knew without a doubt I’d found my home in her. I loved this woman, and I was going to spend the rest of my life showing her just how much.
