Then I walked along the shoreline, looking down at the myriad shells and flora that had been washed ashore. After I’d gone a few yards, I looked back for Michelle. No sign of her yet.

I continued, looking again to the sun and then ahead, when—

Michelle had said this was a private beach. So why was a figure walking toward me?

I squinted, trying to get a better look. Something seemed so familiar about the confident stride…

  My heart jumped.

  No.

  It couldn’t be.

A ghost was walking toward me.

A ghost who said I had the most beautiful blue eyes he’d ever seen.

  Discussion Questions

The theme of a story is its central idea or ideas. To put it simply, it’s what the story means. How would you characterize the theme of Twisted?

Discuss Ruby’s character. How has she changed since we first met her? Were you surprised that she ended up quitting the police force? Why or why not?

What do you think the real relationship between Brad Steel and Wendy Madigan was or is?

Do you believe, based on what we know so far, that Bradford Steel is alive? Why or why not?

Ryan and Ruby have evolved quite a bit in the bedroom. Discuss Ruby’s reaction to this and her conversations with Melanie. Is Ruby losing herself or finding herself?

Rodney Cates mentions that one of the people Theodore Mathias trusted was Brad Steel. What did you make of this revelation? What might the relationship between the two men be?

Discuss literary devices used in the story. Any foreshadowing? Other devices? What is the significance of the story’s title?

What does the future hold for Jonah? Will he be arrested for accessory to the murder of Larry Wade?

Will the Steels and Ruby find the mysterious Caribbean island? What might they find there?

Discuss the symbol on the ring. What meanings might it have other than those alluded to in Twisted?

Ruby deduces that Mathias is running out of money. Do you feel this is true? Why or why not? Where might the money have gone?

Jade promised to tell Brooke the truth about Nico Kostas/Theodore Mathias. Discuss what Brooke’s reaction might have been.

Ruby theorizes that Wendy has a reason for everything she says, even the lies. Do you agree? Why or why not?

Are you ready for the Steel Brothers Saga to end?

  Acknowledgments

Twisted turned out to be the perfect title for this book in the Steel saga. From the twisted symbol on the future lawmakers’ rings to the twisted mind of Wendy Madigan—and many more twists in between—this book, more than any others in the saga so far, finally begins to bring the many secrets surrounding the Steels to light. I loved writing this installment of the saga. I’ve left a cliffhanger, of course, but soon the mysteries will all be solved.

A very special thank you to my husband, Dean, who is a district lecturer for the Grand Masonic Lodge of Colorado. Your knowledge of symbols helped me immeasurably.

Thanks so much to my amazing editors, Celina Summers and Michele Hamner Moore. Your guidance and suggestions were, as always, invaluable. Thank you to my line editor, Scott Saunders, and my proofreaders, Amy Grishman, Angela Kelly, and Chrissie Saunders. Thank you to all the great people at Waterhouse Press—Meredith, David, Kurt, Shayla, Jon, Yvonne, Jeanne, Renee, Dave, and Robyn. Special thanks to Yvonne Ellis for the beautiful cover art for Twisted and for the whole series.

Many thanks to my assistant, Amy Denim, for taking care of business so I can write. I couldn’t do it without you!

Thank you to the members of my street team, Hardt and Soul. HS members got the first look at Twisted, and I appreciate all your support, reviews, and general good vibes. You all mean more to me than you can possibly know.

Thanks to my always supportive family and friends, and to my local writing groups, Colorado Romance Writers and Heart of Denver Romance Writers, for their love and support.

Most of all, thank you to the diehard Steel fans who have eagerly waited for the conclusion of the series. Things will be Unraveled soon!
