Then the mic was back in Gentry’s face. “What do you think your chances are for Album of the Year?”

But Skye wasn’t done and pulled the microphone back her way. “He’s going to win. I know it.”

He loved her confidence in him, but still … “It doesn’t matter to me if I win or lose. I know it sounds corny, but I feel like I’ve already won, with my family healthy and happy, and I’m making the best music of my career. Honest music.”

“One last question. I think it’s safe to say that your sound has evolved a lot in the last year. If I may be so blunt, you went from ‘Built to Leave’ to ‘Built to Stay.’ Was there a moment you can pinpoint where everything changed? Maybe when you lost your finger or your alleged tiff with Neil Blevins?”

Nice try, but he was going to let that particular rumor about him and Neil fizzle out and die. The two men would never be best friends—or friends at all—but without Neil pushing him and challenging him at every turn, Gentry wouldn’t be the man he was today. “Come on. Don’t play me. You’ve got to know the story by now. It’s in all my hit songs on the new album, starting with the one that’s up for Song of the Year.”

“You’re talking about ‘Riding in the Dark’?”

“That’s the one. Everything I have in my life, all the riches a man could want, started with one wild night, a midnight horseback ride, and the prettiest girl I’d ever laid eyes on.”

  “Just like that?”

Gentry hugged Skye close. “Just like that. And life has never been sweeter.”
