Beckett’s Wolf Pack, Triad Mates 6
Shelly’s Forbidden Mates
Shelly Brooks-Lancaster has been forbidden to have mates. She has been told often that she is not worthy, not pretty, and not good enough to be part of a mating. The Fates step in and show her that she is not only all of those things, she is needed by the men who are meant to be hers.
Her sweet wolves give Shelly the courage to reject her mother’s decree. Maxwell Oliver and Eli Granger work as enforcers for Alpha Randall. They have known pain and suffering—often taking the cruel and unjust punishments for pack members. They long for a woman to complete their triad, but they know better than to hope any woman would think them worthy mates. Then they met Shelly. She is goodness and light in their dark world.
Life pulls them apart, but their hearts know what they need. They must hold tightly to each other. A life of love, happiness, and children await them.

Chapter 1
Twenty-five Years Ago
“Jace, I don’t know what you and Jackson were thinking,” Alpha William Matheson said as he looked down at his thirteen-year-old son from his impressive six-foot-five-inch height. He crossed his muscled arms across his broad chest and waited for his son’s answer. Blue paint dripped from his black hair to form streaks that ran down his forehead. The comical effect spoiled the sternness of his gaze.
“I’m sorry, Dad,” Jace said quietly.
“Really, son, what were you thinking?” Beta Michael Staven added, just as annoyed by the blue paint that was covering his flannel shirt. He grabbed for the towel that their mate Clarice Beckett handed him. “Don’t laugh, Clarice!”
Clarice quickly covered her mouth with her hand as she tried to suppress her mirth. She wasn’t successful. She walked over to William and handed him a towel, unable to keep her laughter quiet as he snatched it from her and wiped at his face.
“Your mother seems to think that your prank is very funny, Jace,” Michael said, annoyed. “I don’t.”
“I’m sorry, Pop,” Jace said softly.
“Oh, Mates, you know it’s funny,” Clarice said quickly, interrupting their son’s guilty apology. She turned to face her son, her blue eyes twinkling as she looked at him. She was completely tickled by the p
rank that Jace and his triad partner Jackson had pulled. “I’m sure Jace and Jackson didn’t mean for the two of you to be the ones who came through the doorway of the men’s bunkhouse at that moment.”
“That’s beside the point,” Michael said quickly. “They shouldn’t have been trying to pull that prank to begin with.”
“I seem to remember a time when you and William pulled pranks of your own, Michael,” Cara Scott reminded him as she stood between her mates Walter Bennings and Thomas Clarke who were enforcers for the pack and loving fathers to their son Jackson.
“We didn’t,” Michael said immediately.
“Liar,” Clarice said, laughing softly. “What about the time you and William put hot sauce in the punch bowl at the pack dance?”
“Good thing your mother took the first cup and found out what you did before anyone else took a taste,” Walter said, stepping forward and placing his large hand on his son’s shoulder. “You are never to do that, Jackson.”
“I wouldn’t do that, Pop,” Jackson said without hesitation, his brown eyes wide with emotion.
“Okay, Jackson,” Walter whispered. “You’re a good boy.” He reached up and ran his hands down the soft curls of Jackson’s brown hair, smiling at the way his son automatically leaned into his touch. “You’re a good wolf.”
“A mischievous wolf,” Thomas added, laughing as he stepped toward his son and gathered him within his arms for a gentle hug.
“I’ll tone it down, Dad. I promise,” Jackson said, looking up at his father and hoping that his dad could tell that he was being sincere.
“I know you will,” Thomas said, smiling indulgently. “Just don’t let all the humor leave you, Jackson. You need to have humor.” He leaned toward him to whisper in his ear. “Jace will need your humor to help him. He’s going to have the weight of the world on his shoulders when he becomes alpha.”
Jackson looked at Jace and saw the man his triad partner was going to be. Jace was a good guy. He was strong and cared about everyone. Jackson didn’t know how he had ever gotten him to help put the bucket of blue paint on the top of the open door of the men’s dorm. Jace was usually the voice of reason. Jace was the one that Jackson always depended on. He knew exactly what his father meant by his whispered words. Jackson was going to have to be the one to remind Jace to have fun.
A knock on the front door of the log house where the alpha family lived made them all turn toward it in expectation. Clarice started to go toward it when both William and Michael reached out to take gentle hold of her hands to stop her.
“Do not,” William said softly, his voice firm.
“Someone needs us,” Clarice said gently. She squeezed her mates’ hands and said a silent prayer of thanks to Mother Fate for giving her such kind and loving men to build a life with.
“We will go,” Michael told her. “Keep back and stay safe, sweetheart.”
Clarice nodded and stepped back, taking her place beside her son and waiting while her mates went to the front door. It was a cold night. The wind that whipped through the doorway when the door was opened made her shiver. Seeing Kurt Brooks and Neil Lancaster standing there with their two little girls made her heart hurt for the kind men.
Kurt stood tall, holding his five-year-old daughter Shelly in his arms. The sweet little girl was resting her head on her daddy’s shoulder. It was a beautiful contrast to see Shelly’s long, dark hair brushing against her father’s blond curls.
Neil Lancaster stood beside his triad partner. Clarice looked at Cara and knew that her best friend saw the worry and pain in both men’s faces, just as she did. Neil and Kurt’s eight-year-old daughter Synthia stood beside Neil, gripping his hand and pressing against his legs. She looked frightened.
Neil had the same dark hair and blue eyes that Shelly did. Synthia looked exactly like Kurt, with blonde hair and brown eyes. Both girls adored their fathers. Clarice had always been happy to see the two little ones when they were with Kurt and Neil. It was when they were the most relaxed. It was when they felt loved. It was also when they smiled the most.
Their mother Vera Moore was a difficult woman to like. She had originally come from Alpha Hayward’s pack. They were not a pack that supported triad matings—in fact, they thought them to be vile and unnatural. It was a surprise to everyone when Vera had accepted Kurt and Neil’s request to form a triad mating. Clarice could sense the sadness in both Kurt and Neil increasing over the years. They kept their feelings to themselves, but it was obvious to Clarice and Cara that they were not happy in their mating. Only their two daughters gave them any joy at all.
“Alpha, we ask for your help,” Kurt said calmly, holding Shelly close against his chest as she stirred.
“Daddy?” Shelly asked sleepily.
“It’s okay, honey. We’re at the alpha’s home. We’re safe,” he assured her, kissing the top of her head lightly.
“I like Alpha William’s home,” Shelly said tiredly. “It’s a nice house. It makes me feel good.”
“I’m glad, baby,” Kurt whispered, kissing her forehead lightly. “You’ll always be safe in this home.”
“Synthia, too?” Shelly asked, worried for her sister.
“Yes, baby. Synthia, too,” Kurt assured her, looking at Neil and smiling sadly.
“Do you feel safe here, Synthia?” Neil asked, squatting down to face his older daughter. He looked into her gentle brown eyes and saw the sadness that no child her age should ever feel.
“Yes, Poppa. I like it here,” Synthia answered quietly, leaning into her father’s arms and sighing contentedly when he hugged her gently.
“What’s wrong, Kurt?” William asked, stepping closer to them and breathing in their scents. He could scent their love for their daughters, but he could also scent their fear.
Michael closed the front door quietly, turning the lock securely. It wasn’t often that they used the locks. Pack land was safe and secure. But tonight, Michael had a feeling of unease. He wasn’t going to take any chances.
Jace, do you feel that? Jackson asked through the mental link no one knew that he and his best friend and triad partner shared.
I do. Something’s wrong, Jackson, Jace answered.
Both boys stepped closer to the visiting family and helped to form a half-circle of protection around the girls and their fathers. If something was going to happen, they were going to help. They may be only thirteen years old, but they were both already six feet tall and packed with muscle.
“We ask for protection,” Neil said, his voice strong as he spoke for his family.
“From whom?” William asked, looking at both men and knowing that they did not ask lightly. Something was very wrong.
“We believe that another man will be coming to take our mate and our girls from us,” Neil continued, keeping the identity of Alpha Hayward to himself for now. What if he and Kurt were wrong? They wouldn’t be able to live with themselves if they started a war between the packs.
“Why do you believe this, Neil?” Michael asked, looking at William and seeing the disgust that was clearly evident on his triad partner’s face at the mention of another man. Infidelity was not something that was even a part of the shifter world. When mates found each other, there was no thought or desire to be with anyone else. Ever.
“We believe that Vera has been speaking to him for a while,” Kurt said, clearing his throat as he stumbled over his words. How could he admit to his alpha and beta that their mate had been dishonest within their union? It was something that never happened with bonded triad mates. But with Vera, so many things that were expected of a triad were not present in her mind or in her heart.
“You can break the triad bond in order to ensure the safety of your children,” William offered. “It is not something that is done lightly, Kurt, but it is something that can be done in order to uphold the integrity and the safety of the family.”
“We ask for a safe place for our girls to stay for the time being, Alpha,” Kurt continued. “Neil and I wi
ll wait for Vera to come home and have a talk with her. We don’t want Shelly and Synthia to be there.”
“Understandable,” Michael said, looking at William before turning to face Clarice.
“We have a room for your daughters,” Clarice said without hesitation.
“Thank you, my queen,” Kurt said, sighing with relief.
“Go on and get your girls settled. When you’re ready, come back to talk to us,” William said softly.
Kurt nodded and cuddled Shelly closer against his chest. He followed Clarice Beckett as she walked through the living room of the alpha home and led the way up the wide staircase to the second floor. He and Neil had often talked about the humble lifestyle of the alpha family. They lived in a modest log home on the outskirts of pack land near the lake.
A larger pack home was currently being built in the center of their territory and would soon be finished. Kurt knew that it would be a welcoming home filled with enough rooms for all of the enforcers and their families, as well as anyone else who needed a safe place to stay. He had a feeling that he and Neil and their little girls would be asking to be one of the families who lived there. Neither man could even think about staying in the home that they had shared with Vera. It would break both of their hearts.
Clarice led them to the second room on the right of the wide hallway, opened the door, and stepped inside, knowing that the men would follow her. She smiled as she looked at the room that held two twin beds, two bureaus, and a crib. It had been the nursery when Jace had been born. William and Michael had wanted more children, but Clarice had not been able to conceive again after Jace’s birth.
