Foreward by Steve Scott
“There must be a better way to live.”
This was a constant thought that I had during my daily commute while fighting bumper-to-bumper traffic in New Jersey.
That was 2002.
But it wasn’t until late 2004—more than two years later—that I finally did something to change my life.
What did I do?
I quit my job and started an Internet business.
Honestly, not a day goes by that I wish I could go back in time and begin my business those two years earlier in 2002. But at the time, I didn’t know how to turn my dream of passive income into a reality.
That’s why I’m excited that you have taken the first step to replacing your job by checking out the following book, Serve No Master.
In the past 13 years, I have run a variety of Internet-based businesses – affiliate marketing, blogging, creating information products, and self-publishing. If there is a way to generate online income, then I’ve probably tried it at one point.
During this time, I’ve developed a highly-tuned “B.S. Meter” when it comes to people who teach strategies for generating online income. It’s been my experience that most of the so-called “gurus” have very little practical knowledge about what it takes to build a lasting business.
Jonathan Green is different.
While I’ve only met him in person one time, I had heard of his work for many years before that. And I can tell you that he’s the real deal.
Not only has Jonathan built multiple successful online business, he also lives an amazing life with a house in a tropical paradise and the flexibility to always be around his family. Plus, he can grab a surfboard whenever he wants, walk across his front yart, and hop into the water to catch a few waves. To me, this is the perfect example of someone who lives life on his terms.
And in Serve No Master, Jonathan provides a blueprint you can use to start a business to live a life on your terms.
Don’t get me wrong: This book won’t show you how to “get rich quick” or anything of that nonsense. If you want to build a lasting online business, then you should be prepared to work hard and hustle.
Fortunately, Serve No Master shows you how to get started.
There are three reasons why I like (and recommend) this book.
First, Jonathan weaves together a series of short vignettes on how to develop the thinking that’s necessary to escape the rat race and become your own boss. This is powerful stuff because in the words of Yoda, “You must unlearn what you have learned.”
The harsh truth is that most people believe the lies they’ve been told about the modern world. The reality (as Jonathan shows) is that your job security is not so secure, the educational environment doesn’t teach you the real skills you need to thrive, and that exchanging time for money is a fool’s errand.
Next, I like the fact that Jonathan teaches you the core concepts that are critical to creating an income that replaces your job. He does this by covering a few key points:
How to create a financial plan for an online business by identifying how much you need to support you and your family.
A simple strategy for taking that first step online—by leveraging your existing skills and building a business off your existing talents.
How to find a market for your business and identify the people who will pay money for your product or service.
Finally, I like Jonathan’s focus on building a business that serves a need and isn’t about cutting corners. Sure, most of this advice isn’t sexy or glamorous like what many other books promise, but his advice is exactly what I would recommend to anyone interested in getting started online.
Over a decade ago, I made the faithful decision to life live on my terms. At the time, I was told by close friends and family that it was a crazy dream. They said I should be happy with my 9-to-5 job. They said I should be grateful for a steady paycheck. They said that online businesses are nothing more than a scam. And they said that it’s not possible to travel the world and make money while doing it.
I’m happy to say that I proved them wrong.
But I could have also failed in spectacular fashion because I didn’t have a person or resource to turn to which showed how to build a “real” online business.
The good news is you have access to the resource that I never had. In the following pages, you will discover the proven strategies that can help you Serve No Master.

The Day the Earth Stood Still
It was a couple of days after Christmas, and I’d put my entire life on the line. Months of work, years of preparation and strategy – and seven thousand dollars of my family’s money.
I’d invested it all – everything – on one wild idea that I hoped would save my sanity and give me financial freedom. And now the roulette wheel was spinning.
Two days earlier the last of my credit cards was frozen. All of my bank accounts were empty. If the ball didn’t land on my number, my life was about to come crashing down around my ears. It sounds like an incredible risk, but I knew that if I didn’t do it, I’d go crazy.
What makes a regular guy so desperate?
For years I had been working as a ”fixer” for small businesses, selling my time for dollars. Making videos, writing articles, working on code until late at night. If they needed it, I did it. I was a human drone!
I needed to escape that life and move to the next level. My clients had turned into my bosses, and I was desperate to extricate myself from the constant phone calls, emails, and texts that chased me every day.
Sitting in front of my computer that morning, all I had left was hope. If this didn’t pay off, I would have to declare bankruptcy. And I didn’t exactly have a supportive environment. Everyone around me told me I was a gullible idiot, that I was working on some get-rich-quick scheme, and that I was too lazy to do “real work.” But there comes a moment in life when you just have to take that leap of faith and bet on yourself.
10 am, my first product went live – a digital training course explaining everything I did online, and how to build a base of clients. Sure, I was sick of being a “local consultant”, but I also knew there were tons of people who’d bend over backward to have what I had.
The first sale came in and I was jumping up and down in my seat like a little kid, so nervous I wanted to throw up. One sale alone wasn't nearly enough to save me – I was almost ten grand in the hole. Each little sale sent me an alert to my phone as the email came in.
You made a sale!
I couldn’t believe it. The pennies turned into dollars. The dollars turned into hundreds and then thousands. Was it possible? I could already start to taste success.
Within twenty-four hours I had paid off all of my credit cards. They were way beyond “unfrozen”. They were on FIRE. I was in the black, and the sales kept rolling in. My little idea turned into something beyond my wildest expectations. In twenty-four hours there were over one thousand seven hundred sales. After paying off all
my debts, over ten thousand dollars in profit was sitting my Paypal account.
From negative seven thousand to plus ten thousand in a single weekend. I couldn’t think of a better way to ring in the new year. I went up to Washington, DC to celebrate with one of my buddies. All night my phone kept buzzing in my pocket. Sale after sale continued to rock in while I was rocking in the new year. I was making money faster than I was spending it for the first time in my life.
Even when I was asleep, money continued to pour into my account. And I’d gotten addicted to that little buzzing noise from my cell phone. I could barely nod off before it started up again. With a list of thousands of satisfied customers, my life changed forever. I would never have to drink energy drinks at 5 AM and “grind” at some gig ever again.
I was finally in control of my financial destiny, and I felt my first taste of real freedom.
How was I supposed to know it would get more complicated from there?

The Chains that Bind You
Everybody defines freedom differently.
I can’t tell you exactly what freedom is – it’s something you’ve got to decide for yourself. You grabbed this book because you’re looking for freedom, and even though I don’t know you personally yet, that makes me proud. If you’re reading this book, the odds are that right now; you’re wrapped in three layers of chains that trap you in a life that doesn’t satisfy you. If you’ve got it in you to break these three layers – changing the way you think about business and life – you’ve got everything it takes to achieve rapid success. Are these problems that you solve once and forget about? Nope. If you’re like me, you’ll be improving in these areas all the time. But it gets easier when you aren’t struggling for survival with your head barely above water.
The first layer of chains is in your mind. These chains are amazingly powerful and made out of fear. Think about this: they train a circus elephant from birth. They take the baby elephant and tie it to a pole. She will tug and try to break free but is simply not strong enough yet. By the time the elephant is an adult, she will no longer pull on the line. Why? She has been trained to be chained. The amazing thing is that the adult elephant is more than powerful enough to break free. She is no longer tied to the pole with a real chain but instead is held in place by a mental chain. There was a fire at an American circus a long time ago, and none of the elephants survived. Even faced with blistering fire they didn’t try to pull on those ropes. They were so convinced that they didn’t have the power to escape that they didn’t even try.
