‘There’s something I’ve got to tell you.’ He sounded unexpectedly hesitant. ‘Three days ago, in the Accademia, the strangest thing happened when I saw you, Penny. It’s never happened to me before. The very first moment I set eyes on you, the very first glimpse I had of you as I came into that room, I just knew somehow.’ He paused and she felt him take a deep breath. ‘Like I say, it’s something I’ve never encountered before. The only way I can explain it is that it was love at first sight. Yes, I know, ridiculous, isn’t it? But that’s the only way I can describe it.’ He paused again. ‘This is the moment you burst out laughing.’
She raised her face towards him, his eyes shining back at her in the light reflected off the glass of the window.
‘Love at first sight? No, I’d never dream of laughing at something as serious as that.’
