“What the hell, Remy?” Hunter growls as soon as I step into the car.
Immediately I hold up my hand to stop him. “Look, I’m not in the mood. I know you have questions, and you deserve answers, but right now I need you to leave me alone.”
I know I’m acting like a bitch, but I really did reach my limit of crazy for the night. In the morning I will give them answers, but for now, all I want is blissful, silent peace.
Fifteen
Congratulations dude your soulmate’s a whore
Hunter
I’m livid. I can feel my anger coursing through my veins like fire. This night has gone to absolute shit, and the one person with all the answers does not want to be bothered. The more I think about this night, the more I find it hard to believe this girl is the most feared assassin the world has ever seen. Just her mouth vomit in the hall of the club alone is enough to make me want to choke her. Who takes a drink from someone when you can literally see the drugs floating around in it? Who takes drinks from strangers in this day and age, period? Isn’t that like date rape 101 or some shit?
“Dude, calm down, I can feel your anger from here,” Cody says, glancing at me in the rearview mirror. “Don’t worry, she’s asleep,” he adds, flicking his eyes in Remy’s direction.
“How can you act so calm about this?” I ask.
Shrugging he answers, “I’m sure she has her reasons. We just need to be patient.”
“Fuck reasons. We’re on a mission. Not only did she run off solo and get high, she also put herself in danger by conversing with that Hatter dude, and to add insult to injury, she kneed me in the balls, ran disappearing into the night like some psycho, and for what? To get her rocks off. Congratulations, dude, your soulmate’s a whore.”
“Since we’ve been best mates for a couple of years now, I’m going to let that comment slide, but if you ever insult our girl again, I’ll slowly peel the fur from your body and turn it into a rug. You got that, wolf?” Cody snarls, a menacing growl working its way up from his chest. His voice mixed with the threat in his words is enough to scare even me.
“There's more to it, and you know it,” he sighs. “She mated. The marking has already settled on her neck, covering the bite mark.”
“And you’re ok with that?” I ask in disbelief.
I know the Fae are known for their carefree lifestyle, but damn. You would think with mates they’d draw some kind of line.
Chuckling, he says, “I know what you’re thinking. The reason why I’m not turning all Alpha male like you is because I can sense that the mage she was with is also her soul bound mate. It would definitely explain her crazy behavior to get to him. You know as well as I do that you can’t ignore the call of the bond.”
Cody’s been my best friend for as long as I can remember. He’s never once taken anyone else’s side over mine, even when he knew I was wrong, until now. She has changed everything.
“Are you sure he was a mage?” I ask, trying to change the subject. I don’t want to think about the stupid pull that’s turning my life upside down.
“Yes,” he answers with confidence. His marking of a crescent moon surrounded by blue and purple stars now marks her skin. He hails from the Ravenwood coven. One of the three strongest covens in the history of mages. You would know all this if you stopped being a stubborn arse and opened up those wolf senses of yours,” he says.
“I’d rather not. She smells like sex and his seed,” I growl out the last bit.
“You wolves. So territorial,” Cody huffs, shaking his head and smiling.
“Soul bound mates are rare, and here this girl has two of them,” I say, ignoring his comment.
“Three,” Cody corrects me.
“Excuse me?” I snort.
“Deny it all you want, Hunter. You wouldn’t be so annoyed if you did not think Remy was your mate as well. She belongs to you just as much as she belongs to me and that other guy,” Cody says before turning his attention back to the road.
Neither one of us speak the rest of the way to the warehouse. Cody may be right, but I will never admit it. I haven’t even admitted it to myself. How can I disgrace my family like that, taking her as my mate? If it weren’t for her my pack would still be alive. No matter what I feel for her, I could never disrespect the memory of my family like that.
Hunter
“Hunter has a girlfriend. Hunter has a girlfriend,” my little sister sang, circling me as soon as I walked through the door.
“I do not,” I denied as I scooped her up, threw her onto the couch, and started tickling her belly.
“Do so,” she gasped through her laughs, as she frantically tried to get away.
“Let your sister up,” my mother chastised me.
When I let my sister go, the little demon ran to our mother and squealed, “I saw Hunter kissing Emily over by the tree line.”
“Is that so?” my mother asked, raising her brow and sounding not so amused.
“Is what so?” my father asked, walking over to us. He dropped his suitcase and kissed my mother firmly on the mouth before letting her go.
“Your son here was caught by Abigail kissing the Alpha’s daughter,” my mother explained.
Turning to me, my father gave me one of his many stern looks. He was not happy about this little tidbit of information at all.
“I hope your intentions towards Emily are honorable son,” he says, warning me.
I looked away. “Come on, Dad. We’re just having fun.”
Never stare a Beta in the eye unless you know you can take him, or else you could get ripped to shreds, family or not.
“There is no such thing as just having fun in a wolf pack, especially with the Alpha’s daughter. If her father found out, me being his Beta will not save you. Either you commit to the girl or leave her be,” my dad growled, flashing his teeth.
“I’m eighteen, Dad, I don’t need the mate lecture from you,” I yelled back.
My father stood over me and let out a mighty growl. My wolf immediately whimpered, and I hunched over, lowering my eyes in submission.
“You will either commit to the Alpha’s daughter, or leave her alone. Do I make myself clear?” he mandated as his green eyes glowed, barely containing his wolf.
The command speared through my body, overriding my brain and leaving me with no choice but to follow.
“Yes, sir,” I spit out.
I turned away and retreated to my room, slamming the door behind me. Stupid pack and all their stupid rules. Just like me, Emily did not want to be pinned down. That’s what made the arrangement we have works so well. We were just having fun. Living our lives the way we wanted before her father chose a mate for her. Admittedly, I was one of her father’s prime candidates, since I was his Beta’s son, but I always held out hope of finding my soul bound mate. What if Emily and I were to mate, have pups, and she suddenly appeared? What then? Did I leave my wife and kids? I knew it was a crazy thought since soul bound mates were rare, but a wolf could dream.
I ignored my family the rest of the day, not even going down for dinner. I needed my space from them. I wasn’t strong enough to ignore my father’s command, so I decided to tell Emily what my father said and leave her alone. I snuck out my window and climbed down the tree to our yard. Running quickly through the grass, it took only a couple of minutes for me to reach the Alpha’s house. I climbed the lattice up to Emily’s window, and once there, I witnessed a girl with long, dark blue hair hold a knife to Emily’s throat and slit it.
Horrified, I gasped, and the girl’s shocked turquoise blue eyes clashed with mine when she spotted me standing in shock by the window, dropping Emily’s body like a sack of potatoes. My feet were planted firmly in place, and all I could do was stare. The girl was beautiful; she had the face of an angel with plump bee stung lips and a killer body. Her neck was covered in bruises, but even still, it looked slender and strong, just like her.
“Well, what do we have here? Lost wolf?” A voice said and I quickl
y broke eye contact with the girl and saw a guy who resembled her staring daggers at me with the same turquoise blue eyes.
Finally breaking from her shock, the girl lunged for me. I launched myself backward, out of reach, and fell from the open window, landing hard on my back on the ground below. Flinging herself from the same window, the girl landed gracefully next to me. I barely missed her foot connecting with my body as her long leg swept low and kicked out at me. Rolling away, I shifted into my wolf form and lunged for her throat. No matter how beautiful she was, she just killed the Alpha’s daughter. Emily’s blood still wet her hands, and she had no intention of letting me go free.
The girl was inhumanly fast, and quickly dodged me. I could smell her wolf form on her, and it made me wonder why she wasn’t shifting. My wolf easily has over a hundred pounds on her human form. The boy from before launched himself from the window and landed nimbly on his feet, grabbing me by the tail and tossing me away from his sister with inhuman strength. They’re twins, I’d thought as I was flung through the air.
Landing on all fours, I growled menacingly and lunged again. This time I connected with my target and bit down hard onto her hand. The girl didn’t even flinch or cry out. It was like she didn’t feel anything at all. He blood filled my mouth, and I pulled harder, shaking my head and trying to rip her hand off. Her blood tasted funny, and it did crazy things to my head. I flung her hand away and the force sent her flying on the other side of me.
“We didn’t come here for you,” the boy said while he held his hands up. “Turn away and so will we.”
The boy’s easy surrender confused my foggy head even more. What the fuck was in this girl’s blood? My wolf wanted to fuck her, not kill her, which in itself was crazy since she sure as shit wanted to kill me.
“Phantom, what are you doing?” the girl hissed. “O’Donnell said to leave no witnesses”.
“O’Donnell sent us to kill the family in that house,” Phantom countered, pointing at the Alpha’s door. “We’ve done that. Our mission is complete.”
Scowling, his sister pointed at me. “What about him?”
“What about him? The only thing I see right now is a large fucking wolf,” Phantom answered.
His eyes bore into his sister’s, and it seemed like they were having some kind of silent conversation. Yep, definitely twins.
I shook my head to clear it, and I’m about to launch myself back at them when Phantom says, “If you really wanted to kill the wolf you would have shot him. Right now you’re just toying with him. Either shoot him and be done with it, or let’s leave.”
When the girl reached into her leather jacket I knew I was done for, but she just tore a strip from her shirt, exposing her flat stomach, and wrapped her hand. Turning away from me, she disappeared through the dark forest, and her brother followed, giving me a sad smile as he passed.
Not giving them a chance to change their minds, I took off towards my house and barreled through the front door still in my wolf form, shattering it. The scent of blood immediately filled my sensitive wolf nostrils. I ran to my parents room and noticed them deathly still in their beds. Moving closer to their prone bodies, I noticed tiny darts sticking out their necks and leaking a thick green substance onto the crisp white sheets. I could smell a rancid apple scent strongly on them, and I knew they were dead. Shifting back into human form, I grabbed my mother’s hand. It was cold and dead just like her, and a river of tears ran down my cheeks. Suddenly remembering my sister, I bolted up and ran into her room, nearly throwing up at the sight that awaited me. Lying prone in her bed was my sister’s headless form, wearing her favorite frilly pink nightgown, now soaked in a pool of blood. On the other side of the bed, her head laid on the floor with unseeing eyes covered in bloody chestnut curls. This time I do hurl, covering the floor and my feet in vomit.
“There you are, wolf, I’ve been looking everywhere for you,” a cold voice said from the doorway.
Looking over, I spotted another girl, this one not as attractive as the first. This one had more of a harsh beauty. Her curly red hair was done up on top of her head with a gold crown of hearts holding it in place. Her eyes glowed a light green color. I could tell she was supernatural, but I couldn’t tell what kind. Maybe some kind of Fae. The tight dress she wore on her skinny frame looked old fashioned and was splattered in blood, but even more blood dripped from a thin silver bracelet around her wrist.
Noticing my gaze she pulled the bracelet from around her wrist and before my eyes it transformed into a long thin string that I realised was a garrote. She was the one who killed my sister, and that was my sister’s blood dripping all over her. Growling, I take a step forward, which only made the crazy bitch smile.
“Nuh ah,” she tutted clicking her tongue. “You don’t want to do that,” she warned in a Scottish accent.
“You’re dead, bitch,” I growled through my teeth, barely holding my wolf in.
“You’re a hot guy and well endowed,” she said, glancing down my naked form to my dick and licking her lips. “Why don’t you be a good wolf and lay down on the bed for me and my friend, and I promise to kill you quickly afterwards.”
Stepping through the doorway, another girl walked in. This one had multi colored green hair, huge soulless black eyes, and was wearing bright green lipstick on her wide lips. She also eyed my body with lust, and I cursed myself for being caught unawares. I was outnumbered, and my wolf could smell that this girl was a shifter. Probably some kind of snake or lizard. Her skin rippled and changed colors like scales, and in her wide mouth were a set of fangs. Knowing I wouldn’t be able to take them both on and come out unscathed, I turned and launched myself from the window, shifting in the air.
When my four paws hit the grass, I took off like my life depended on it, and in truth, it did. A whistle in the air was my only warning before something sharp grazed my cheek and embedded itself with a loud thump in the tree in front of me. I realized it was a dart, just like the ones filled with poison that killed my parents. The poison slowed me down, making my head cloud and my ears ring, worse than when I swallowed that other girl’s blood, the one with the blue hair.
I barely heard the two running after me, or the crazy red headed bitch screaming, “Off with his head,” as they chased after me.
When I cleared the forest, I hardly had enough strength to pull on the vial I always wore around my neck, but I flung it to the ground, shattering the precious glass. A portal opened in front of me, and I barely made it through before I collapsed and blacked out.
The next time I awoke I was lying down in a posh room with my best friend smiling down at me.
“Good day, mate. I thought I lost you,” he said, grinning even wider.
“You almost did,” I croaked as I tried to sit up.
Helping me into a more comfortable position, Cody handed me a glass of water, and I looked at it suspiciously. “It’s safe,” he said, trying and failing to keep from laughing.
“Yeah, you said that the last time, and yet I woke up in bed with three naked summer fae,” I told him drily, still eyeing the drink with wariness..
“Best way ever to lose your virginity if you ask me, you grumpy wolf bastard,” he mumbled under his breath.
Chuckling, I drank the water, my thirst and aching throat winning out in the end. When I finished, I looked up sadly and whispered, “My family is dead.”
“I know,” he replied softly. “While you were unconscious I left to see what happened to you. The village, your whole pack, they’re all dead.”
My heart broke all over again. I knew that Emily and the Alpha’s family were dead, as were my parents and sister, but I had no clue they killed the whole pack as well.
“Do you have any idea of who would do something like this?” Cody gently prodded.
Balling my fists up, I growled in anger I growl. “I only know two names, one is Phantom. He and his sister were the ones responsible for killing the Alpha’s family. I caught his sister in the act of killing Emil
y myself. They said they were sent there by someone name O’Donnell.”
Looking at Cody, I saw a brief flash of recognition cross his face. “You know him,” I accused.
“I know of him, as well as people who could help find him if that’s what you want,” Cody answered.
What kind of question was that? Of course that was what I wanted. “Yes. I want all of them dead. I won’t stop until I’m dripping in their blood. Only then will I give my pack peace,” I vowed.
I told Cody everything. The next day the prince and I left the summer court and joined The Agency. Our mission aligned with theirs. To help all supernaturals who were abused for their abilities and unjustly hunted by humans like Patrick O’Donnell. I made it my mission to learn everything I could about the man. Gathered whatever info I could use against him to take my revenge. He had two children who were considered the best assassins in his entire organization. Twins. Even though I could never find a description on the two, I knew it was them. It seemed like I was the only person who had ever seen them outside O’Donnell’s organization and lived to tell the tale. Why would they just let me go?
Sixteen
How many people has she killed for them to all blur together?
“We’re here, mate,” Cody says, breaking me out of nightmare lane. We’re parked in the garage, and I have no clue how long we’ve been here. Disgusted with myself, I exit the car, not bothering to help Cody carry Remy into the house. The memory brought on a lot of resentment and shame. How could I touch her, allow her to touch me after the history between us?
“What’s going on with you?” Cody questions once we reach the living area.
“Nothing,” I’m quick answer, avoiding his eyes.
“You’re lying, mate.” He glances between Remy and myself. “You’re not still mad at her about mating, are you?” he asks, shifting Remy higher in his arms.
