COLLEGE STUDENTS PROTEST VIETNAM WAR

  Washington--(AP)--Last weekend more than 15,000 college students carrying signs, guitars, and paper peace doves, paraded in Washington to protest this nation's involve­ment in the war in Vietnam. They carried `I will Not Fight in Vietnam' signs, and threw eggs at policemen.

  They stared out the windows in silence. Below, the green San Bernardino mountains that for an instant reminded them of Vietnam disappeared under the wings as the Lear flew over the sand and desert that led to Las Vegas.

  "We land in ten minutes, gentlemen" the pilot announced over the intercom.

  The Wolf held his splattered blouse in his hands. He was slowly unpinning the badges and stained ribbons. He glanced up and saw Menuez and Krocek and other dead comrades watching him. He looked into each one's face and shook his head. "This is no place to be," he told them. “I’ll be back.”

  In his hand Court held a small newspaper article the other men hadn't noticed.

  FIRST STEP TO MOON

  Houston--(AP)--The Apollo 7 flight crew are ready to launch in the first manned test of the spacecraft that will carry three astronauts to the Moon and return them to Earth.

  The accompanying photograph showed a photo, superimposed over the surface of the moon, of an earlier spacecraft lifting off. Court stared at it, his mind starting to range. Faintly at first, then louder, he started hearing radio transmis­sions of men's voices that were strained and hard at work: “Two's in...take it more to the east...MIGS, MIGS...Okay Four, Break NOW...We got him, we got him...I'm hit...MAYDAY, MAYDAY. That's not a SAM, that's Two. Hillsboro we got one down at Mu Gia...” He saw Paul Austin's fireball and Pintail Four blowing up over Hanoi. Then, stumbling forward through the swirling mist, he saw Ron Bender, POW, humiliated and hurt
