  About the Author

  Loretta P. Prater, PhD, retired in 2012 as professor and dean of the College of Health and Human Services at Southeast Missouri State University, where she provided administrative oversight for the Department of Criminal Justice and Sociology and a Regional Police Academy. Prior to moving to Missouri, she held academic assignments at Eastern Illinois University and the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. Dr. Prater received her doctorate in child and family studies from the University of Tennessee at Knoxville. As a social scientist interested in family dynamics over the life span, her research, national presentations, and publications have focused on topics addressing the health and well-being of children and families, including issues related to police brutality and the relationship between policing and the community. During her professional career, she has received numerous awards and has published book chapters and journal articles. She has a passion for and personal interest in social justice. Dr. Prater has served on numerous boards in various communities and states. She has served as president of the Southeast Missouri Chapter of the United Way. She currently is a member of the Family and Community Trust Board of Missouri and is the chairperson of the Community Advisory Council for the Missouri Foundation for Health.
