  Acclaimed as the most famous haunted house story in literature, it recounts how a psychic researcher invites a group of people to help solve the mystery which seems to lie in the character of the original builder of Hill House.

  James, Henry The Turn of The Screw (1898)

  Another of the great landmarks of supernatural fiction – allegedly based on a true story told to the author – about a pair of dead, evil servants who return to haunt a house and gain control over the two small children living there.

  King, Stephen The Shining (1977)

  McGrath, Patrick Asylum (1996)

  Set in a top-security mental hospital, this is the story of Stella Raphael, the beautiful wife of the new deputy superintendent, who sets out to possess Edgar Stark, an artist, sculptor and the perpetrator of an unspeakably brutal crime.

  Macardle, Dorothy Uneasy Freehold (1941) [USA: The Uninvited]

  Famous novel of a young playwright and his sister, who take over a remote house near Bristol where two women died in mysterious circumstances and return to haunt the new occupiers.

  Malet, Lucas The Tall Villa (1919)

  Romantic story by a member of the Henry James circle about a lonely woman in a villa haunted by the ghost of a nobleman who protects her from an unscrupulous seducer.

  Marsh, Richard Tom Ossington’s Ghost (1898)

  A young teacher who rents a cottage discovers it is haunted by a restless ghost, but he returns her kindness by showing her the way to a lost fortune.

  Matheson, Richard Hell House (1971)

  The house has terrible supernatural powers that have defied the investigations of a number of psychic researchers. When a new team arrives to find the source of the phenomena, they are soon confronting the terror that slaughtered their predecessors.

  Pargeter, Edith The City Lies Four-Square (1939)

  Gothic novel by the mystery writer better-known as Ellis Peters about a young doctor living in a fine house in the middle of a slum and the interventions of a ghostly victim of a riding accident.

  Peck, Richard The Ghost Belonged To Me (1997)

  The Armsworth family have pretensions to be among the social elite in a small Illinois town. Alexander, the son, is uneasy about this situation, but things begin to change when he discovers the ghost of a young Creole girl from the Civil War era haunting the barn.

  Peeke, Margaret Born of Flame (1892)

  A man recovering from illness in a haunted house in rural England solves the mystery of the tortured spirit in the living room when he discovers a cache of old letters.

  Riddell, Charlotte The Haunted House at Latchford (1872)

  The ghost of Crow Hall is a woman whose presence effects the health of the residents, but ultimately leads to the discovery of a skeleton and some hidden jewellery.

  The ghost of a lewd and wicked monk who haunts an old palace is laid to rest by a visitor forced to spend a night in the old man’s cell.

  Classic farce about an American family who take up residence in haunted Canterville Chase in Berkshire where the sympathetic young daughter helps the tormented ghost to gain release from his punishment.

  Wood, Mrs. Henry The Shadow of Ashlydyat (1863)

  The ghosts of two mourners carrying a coffin haunt the ancient family estate of Ashlydyat – their appearance said to herald a death in the family – until the discovery of a skeleton brings events to a dramatic climax.

  Young, Francis Brett Cold Harbour (1924)

  A famous surgeon and his wife holidaying in Worcestershire learn about the ill-repute of Cold Harbour House and come to suspect that its reputation for being haunted originated from an ancient evil that dates back to Roman times.
