The aura of evilness, I can’t stop it anymore. Taking my cross that Donna brought me, I slam it inside his ear. His blood makes my soul happy. I want him to suffer. Slamming my door shut, I take his medicine in his pocket and jam it in his neck.
Amazing Grace, how sweet the taste,
From A gutless wretch like you
I once was lost, with your sins am found
Was blind, but with your blood I am free
Katherine
That infernal chant in my head is driving me crazy as I orient myself back in the light.
Oh my fuck. What happened? Mary blocked us out. I knelt beside him, he still had a pulse, although it was a thready one.
I looked down. I was covered in blood. Shit, shit, shit. I didn’t want to be sent away from here. Other places could be much worse.
Changing my clothes, I wiped as much as I could off of myself. I covered him up with a clean blanket.
I needed to find Donna. She would help me. She would know what to do.
Donna
My mouth won’t close as Katherine keeps talking about what sweet little Mary did.
“Are you sure it wasn’t Grace?” I had to ask.
“It wasn’t. We were talking while Mary was out in the light.” She insisted.
I couldn’t let them take her away. I needed her here with me, Katherine anyway. I knew what I needed to do.
“Here. Drink this and relax. I am going to go to your room and get rid of the body.”
She looked at me with big round eyes gulping down the drink. I didn’t mention that was how I took my sedatives was crushed in liquid.
“Don’t worry honey.” I hugged her. “I will protect you.”
She looked like she wanted to say something, but her eyelids dropped, and her head hit my pillow.
I knew I didn’t have much time, but I needed to save Katherine. I was lucky I had been at the institute long enough, I was allowed to roam inside the building pretty freely.
I went to the kitchen. I knew it was there somewhere. I saw them using it at the last holiday. Where was it? Ah, under the sink. Grabbing the electric knife and meat mallet, I went back to my room to save my friend.
Katherine was lightly snoring. It made me smile. I slammed the meat mallet into her head. That was the first place the aliens hid. No compartments opened, so I slammed it again. I heard bones cracking. Blood was freely flowing from her nose and out of her mouth.
Taking each finger and slamming it, then next was her hands and feet. Still no luck, I was going to have to use the knife. She would have some scars, but she would thank me for getting the aliens out of her.
Using the knife through her flesh was much easier now that her bones were broken. I was working on disarticulating her hip with the mallet when I felt the strong arms reaching for me. I flailed around thinking it was the alien.
When he finally subdued me, I saw it was Darren, our night shift orderly. “Oh thank goodness, Darren. I thought you were one of them.” Smiling at him, I stopped fighting.
EPILOGUE
“This is Channel 17 News reporter Sandra Michie. Another macabre scene at Brunswick Mental Hospital.”
The news crews came from every station to report both Adalyn’s and Dr. Newton’s deaths and to try and get a glimpse at Alexis Dhavern, who looked like she herself was about to have a breakdown.
Some reported Adalyn’s past, and said she was finally at peace. Bizarrely enough, very few had much to say about Dr. Newton’s demise.
For Dr. Dhavern, she took a true mental health vacation, relinquishing the reins of Brunswick to another while she reevaluated her choices of career.
As for the patients – life goes on – or it doesn’t .
The End – For Now
