I was so incredibly happy that I was probably wearing a goofy grin. “I’m ready.” Jase took my hand, but I turned to the nurse before I left. “Is Dr. Heaven going to be in later?”
The nurse wore a puzzled frown. “I asked around, but there’s no one here by that name.”
“He was here the night Jase woke up.”
“No. That was Dr. Heath. The name is similar. You probably read it wrong.” She cast an admonishing look at Jase. “It’s really not advisable for you to leave without being formally discharged.”
“I appreciate the warning,” Jase said politely, putting his arm around me. “But we’ve got plans.”
With his arms around me again, I felt like I was finally home. As we left the hospital, he looked down at me. “You sure about this?”
“I was about to ask you the same thing.”
“I don’t need a big wedding, Jase. All I want is you, but I don’t want to disappoint our family and friends.”
“We can throw a party later.”
I smiled. “Let’s do it. Marry me, Jase.”
He dipped his head and kissed me deeply. I folded my arms around him, uncaring that we were in the parking lot where everyone could see us.
“You look happy.”
I turned and saw Alex standing before us smiling.
“Don’t worry,” she said to Jase. “I’m sorry about the last time we met.”
“You’re not going to shoot me?” He smiled, his tone teasing.
“I don’t think so.” Alex looked at me. “I heard you were asking about Dad. Maybe we can get together and talk sometime.”
“Sure,” I said, not exactly sure what she meant.
“He was a great doctor. He used to work here, you know.”
Something in her voice made my heart squeeze. “He’s dead?”
“Yes.” Alex smiled sadly. “I’m sorry.”
“I didn’t know.” A lot of weird things had been happening lately, but I wasn’t going to analyze them now. I was too thankful to have Jase with me. Later, I’d sort out my feelings for my Dad.
“We can talk later. I won’t ask if I’m interrupting because clearly I am,” Alex said with a smile.
“We were thinking about getting married,” I told her. “You wanna come?”
Alex lit up, clearly delighted at having been asked to join us. “Yes! I’d love to.”
Jase’s gaze locked with mine. ‘Okay?’ I mouthed to him.
He grinned. “Come on, Alex. Welcome to the family.”
Alex beamed. “I’m glad there are no hard feelings. Sometimes I let my mouth get me into trouble.”
“Hey, I think that must run in the family,” I said with a laugh. “It’s ironic that girls with the last name Heaven can raise so much hell.”
“You do realize you’ll be giving up Heaven to marry me,” Jase replied with a wink. “Sure, that’s okay with you?”
I threw my arms around him. “I’d give up anything to marry you, Jase Ford. But you’re wrong. Our life together will be pure heaven. I know it.”
“Yeah, I think so too.”
He hauled me into his arms and kissed me until I moaned softly. “Hmm. I love that it’s ending this way.”
Jase’s soulful green eyes melted into mine. “Cori, this is only the beginning.”
