Farewell to Dreams: A Novel of Fatal Insomnia Page 34

by CJ Lyons

It was a reviewer who made this clear to me. He wrote me a personal note commenting that he enjoyed my work because I wasn’t afraid to tackle grief and explore the consequences of loss.

I’d thought I’d been writing my Thrillers with Heart about ordinary people finding the courage to stand up and change their world. But, after reading his note, I realized he was right. Almost all of my books have dealt with life-shattering loss and how we heal. Many of my characters must go through the stages of grief before they dare to risk everything and become heroes.

Perhaps you can’t be a hero until you walk through the fires of hell and emerge on the other side?

If so, then FAREWELL TO DREAMS, is the ultimate test of fire, because Angela knows she’s dying. Soon. And so do we—it’s in the title! Yet, we can learn so much by following her on her journey… because she’s going where someday we all must go.

Hope. Faith. Love. What better guides for Angela—and any of us?

Thank you for joining in on the adventure! Please do let me know if you enjoyed Angela’s story and want more Fatal Insomnia novels.

I’d also like to thank some of the people who helped make this book possible: Toni McGee Causey who lent her extraordinary talents not only to the cover art that enticed you to notice this book, but also with her refusal to let me take the easy way out or give up on this project. Tanya, our fiddler on the cover who is also a talented musician (you can find her music at tanyandorise.com). Jaime Levine for her astute editorial guidance. Joyce Lamb, Amy Eye, and Sandra Simpson for their eagle-eyed copy editing and proofreading. David Morrell and Eileen Hutton for sharing their wisdom and insights. My agent, Barbara Poelle, whose motto “onward and upward!” is a battle cry that keeps me going no matter the obstacles.

Also, Shari Bartholomew, a special fan who won the right to be a character in FAREWELL TO DREAMS—and a hard working ER nurse in real life!

I’m always grateful to my fans who push me to write more great books (usually through messages urging me to write faster because they “need more CJ!”) and who I strive to delight and excite with every story I tell.

  Thanks for reading!

  ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Pediatric ER doctor turned New York Times bestselling thriller writer CJ Lyons has been a storyteller all her life—something that landed her in many time-outs as a kid. She writes her Thrillers with Heart for the same reason that she became a doctor: because she believes we all have the power to change our world.

In the ER she witnessed many acts of courage by her patients and their families, learning that heroes truly are born every day. When not writing, she can be found walking the beaches near her Lowcountry home, listening to the voices in her head and plotting new and devious ways to create mayhem for her characters.
