At first, they saw nothing, the night too dark and the figures below, two from what they could see, were only shadows. They had not found the cave yet, so it gave Haran and Jenna time to get higher and perhaps get away.
Jenna had never been on this hillside. Haran had said there was nothing up here but rocks and birds. Although he had scaled one of the cliff faces in the spring and brought back birds’ eggs for them to eat. As they climbed, she could see why he avoided it. The rocks moved so easily, falling away beneath her feet. Once or twice, they had to stay very still while small avalanches of rocks rolled down the slopes. They held their breaths, waiting for shouts from below. Surely, their pursuers could tell where that had escaped to by the falling debris.
“Haran,” a voice called.
They stopped moving. Jenna looked at Haran and said, “Is that Putol?”
“Yes. Yes, it is.”
“Shall we go down? Surely he doesn’t mean us harm.”
“But to come in the middle of the night,” Haran said.
“What do we do?” she asked.
“You climb higher. I will go down and see what he wants.”
“I’ll come with you.”
“No. He is not alone. Let me see what he wants, you climb higher just in case it is trouble. When I know it’s safe, I’ll call you.”
She didn’t like it, but he was probably right. He could outrun or out fight a panther, but she was vulnerable to these animals. “Be quick,” she said and kissed him on the cheek. “I love you.”
“I love you, Jenna. Now climb.”
She turned and climbed blindly up the hill, while she heard the falling stones below as Haran went back down. It was so dark now she couldn’t see a thing, not even her hands in front of her. All she wanted to do was stop and wait for Haran’s signal, but he had told her to climb.
Her skin prickled, was it fear, something to do with the connection between her and Haran? Did that mean he was in trouble? She looked back down the hill, but there was nothing to see.
A flash of lightning lit up the sky. That must have been what she had felt, a change in air pressure that heralded a storm. Below her, she heard Haran’s voice, but she couldn’t work out what he said, but it sounded like a warning. Using her fingers to grip onto the hard rock, she tried to propel herself further up the hill. Another burst of static, and a low rumble of thunder. Damn, if it rained while she was up here she would probably be washed back down.
“Jenna. Stop,” Haran shouted.
“Haran. What’s going on?”
A bolt of lightning lit up the sky, snaking down to hit the hillside not twenty feet from her. She looked up and suddenly she realised what was happening.
“No,” she shouted and began to scramble back down the hillside. But it was too late. Above her head the wormhole opened; a force much like gravity began to tug at her. She clung to a large boulder, but the intensity of the force grew. The tether had been activated, and it was pulling her back into the wormhole, taking her back to the twenty-second century.
When she finally had to let go of the boulder, she shot up into the air. Looking down she could see Haran’s upturned face, the light from the wormhole illuminating it. He became smaller and smaller, but still she kept his face in her mind. And then darkness enveloped her. For a moment, she was suspended in time and space, floating, weightless. She prayed the wormhole would open below her and spit her back out. But then she began to move, the tether reeling her in, taking her back to the one place she didn’t want to go.
Protectively, she put her hand on her belly. There was no way they were taking her child from her, and no way she was ever going to be happy to stay in the twenty-second century. She swore then that she would get back to Haran. Whatever it took.
