  First Edition Acknowledgements, 2004

Phoebe Rain and her story first woke me from a sound sleep in 1993, and I have been trying to get her on paper ever since.

My deepest thanks to the folks without whom she would not be here yet:

Matthew, who kept believing in Phoebe — and in me — even when I lost faith, and who gave me the courage to hang in

Kerri Walters, who taught me to read tarot back in 1987

Sheila Kelly, who has cheered me on, thumped me soundly, and offered brilliant suggestions through the last four years of working on this

Kay House and Laura Kinsale, who dug into the first draft and came up with cogent commentary on what fit and what didn’t, and why

Robin Rue, my amazing agent, who believed in the book and went to bat for it and won me the chance to make it everything it could be

  David Highfill, for looking twice

Claire Zion and David Highfill, for helping me tunnel down and find the real story, and to both for an amazing willingness to keep fighting through a whole lot of layers to get there

Sheila Kelly, Rebecca Deaton, Jean Schara, Jim Woosley, and NymphDuPave, for the last-minute panic-crit

Billy W. Selph, owner of South Georgia Investigations, for technical assistance regarding wiretapping and telephone spy-tech (any mistakes that remain are mine)

And to Claire for winning Phoebe Rain her home at last

  Thank you.

  About the Author

Kate Aeon is my paranormal suspense romance pseudonym, not a secret identity. It’s just a way for me to let readers know “This book contains paranormal suspense romance.”

Which is important, because I write in a number of different genres. Fantasy, science fiction, strange amalgamations that don’t fit neatly anywhere. And nonfiction. For my other fiction, I’m Holly Lisle.

After a couple decades of writing full time and selling my work to commercial publishers, I discovered that I was happier and had a lot more fun writing if I published my own work. At the same time, I discovered I also I got paid more regularly, more reliably, and better for doing so.

At the point where you discover a win-win solution to some part of your own life, you have to realize you’d be crazy not to pursue it. I pursued it for about four years in hybrid fashion, while also writing commercially—but reality is that self-publishing just kept on beating commercial publishing in every head-on comparison.

So I quit publishing my work commercially. I can’t say the decision was easy, and I can say it was terrifying, but in July of 2011 I walked away from commercial publishing.

Now I’m back to writing the Cadence Drake, Moon & Sun, and Longview series, creating stand-alone fiction in all my genres, building writing courses, and getting the chance to speak directly to the readers of both my fiction and nonfiction.

If you keep hoping I’ll do a particular story, or book, or course, and I haven’t yet—let me know.

Cheerfully, Kate Aeon (aka Holly Lisle)
