Playing Chase (Against The Wall) Page 13

  Sam Reynolds.

Why the fuck does he have to invade my brain every time I come back here? I can’t escape him. Never—even if I tired.

“You know Sam is not coming to the reunion, Sav, don’t you? I kind of figured that’s why you decided to come.” Tyler smirks.

“Yes, I know and you know me oh too well, my old friend. Ella told me. After all, she knows all the gossip in Brooklawn. She keeps me updated. I know he is traveling with his job. And I’m not saying I’m not relieved.”

“Okay, Sav. I’ll stop about Sam. I just want you to know that the last time I talked he said that he…”

I clench my teeth and speak through closed jaws. “Tyler. Enough. It’s over and has been for a very long time. I love you for being such a good and concerned friend, but I’m fine. I’m over it. What time is it? Oh shit. One o’clock. I gotta go. I’m meeting my mom at Duffy’s. Why don’t you and some of the guys come to Roy’s Thursday night? I haven’t been there in forever. Kind of like a reunion before the reunion. Please, say you will try?”

My smile grows and my eyes turn into doe eyes: Like a little girl asking for candy. I just want to see all my old friends together again. The gang. Just like old times. Minus one.

“Okay. I’ll call the guys and we’ll meet up. I’m sure they’ll all want to come. It should be fun. Now go shopping with your mom, and give her my love.”

He kisses me on the cheek and hurries out the door. As I unlock my car and settle into the driver’s seat, I glance down at my phone. Four missed calls and ten texts, all from the girls. My ring tone suddenly goes to a Rascal Flats song and I know right away, it is Ella.

  “Hi, Ells.”

“Where the hell have you been, Sav? We have plans to make, martinis to drink and boys to flirt with. I can’t believe you haven’t called me since you have been home.”

I roll my eyes and smile at my friend’s voice. “Sorry. I went to get lunch at Chuck’s, ran into Tyler, and we ate together. Ells, I’m meeting my mom at Duffy’s and then having dinner with her and Georgia, so I have to go. Tomorrow night at seven, okay?”

She yelps in my ear, “Hell yeah, baby.”

Her shriek pierces my eardrum so bad, that I pull the phone away. “Geez, Ells. Relax. Let the girls know what time, and I’ll meet you at seven.”

She sighs. “Okay, Sav. I’m sorry, but I’m just so excited, and now Maddy is better, and she can actually have a few drinks. And, oh, I’m just so excited! Girl’s night out, baby!”
