When Eugenia reached Jeff, he took her hand and drew her to his side, beaming with pride. The chaplain began the ceremony, and when it came time to say his vows, Jeff placed a gold ring sporting a large emerald on Eugenia’s finger. The extravagance of the piece caused her to gasp, as much as did his words that followed. Holding her hand, he whispered softly, “This gem perfectly matches the deep green eyes that tortured and captivated my heart, long before I knew they belonged to the only woman I would ever love.” Fervently he added, “With this ring, I thee wed.”

When it was Eugenia’s turn, she withdrew a plain gold band that she had bartered from the Gettysburg jeweler in exchange for her father’s gold pocket watch. Knowing her father would approve of the trade, Eugenia began speaking her vows. With tears of joy glistening on her cheeks, she focused on her groom as she slipped the ring on his finger. “With this ring, I thee wed.”

  The End.
