One month together, that’s all we had, but I would cherish every moment.
Coughing, I stopped to catch a breath as my vision blurred and cleared several times. Certain I had a fever, I couldn’t escape the heat that made me want to strip down to almost nothing. I stuffed most of my belongings into the large backpack I carried, including the jacket I removed minutes ago. As I zipped up the closure, my eyes fell on the two-way radio still in my position.
That radio was my lifeline, the one thing that may save my ass if this idea failed.
It was then that I noticed I wasn’t alone.
Undead were shuffling along the ground, lurching as their bodies twisted in a macabre dance without music. Mouths opened and closed but no teeth clicked or gnashed. No noses sniffed the air. No hungry squalls or moans.
I watched in disbelief as the undead came within feet of me but never acknowledged I was there. Milky white eyes searched the surrounding area as if looking for prey but never cared about the girl standing so close. I tried to remember how long ago I had been bitten.
Over twenty-four hours.
Most Infected or H.I.M.S. turned within twelve hours of exposure, especially once the virus hit the bloodstream. That’s what Sawyer said, if I remembered correctly. He’d given me some pills before he fell asleep but I didn’t know what they were. Did they prolong the effects of the virus? Or was I fighting it on my own? There’s no way a few pills would cure me. It had to be something else.
The full implication of this knowledge began to sink in.
Holy shit.
Was I immune?
I turned in the direction I last saw Sawyer. Whatever decision I made, I knew . . .
I was really a lone survivor.
