The Starlight Club 6: Double Seven Page 18

by Joe Corso

Swifty, unlike Jimmy the Hat, was a very private person and he didn’t like going to tables. It just wasn’t his style, but he’d do it for Red… the guy he owed everything to. Just as Swifty completed saying hello to everyone, the meal was being served and the band began playing in the background. No one knew whom Red hired to entertain them tonight, but no one was concerned because Red always surprised his guests with a top act.

After dinner, the curtain opened and just as the band began playing, Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin, followed by Sammy Davis Jr, Peter Lawford, and Joey Bishop walked out and began singing and dancing and entertaining the guests and having as much fun as the surprised people staring at them with open mouths.

  Present

“Well, that’s about it for now, Lynn. Maybe we could continue the story the next time we’re together.”

His daughter smiled at the way he ended the story this time. “Dad, you did it again. There are more questions to be asked than answers to be given.”

Bobby chuckled, knowing what his daughter was going to say. “What questions would they be, Lynn? I continued the story up till Red’s wedding and the reception he had at the Starlight Club. What else is there to tell?”

“Come on, Dad…there’s plenty to tell. For example, did Swifty ever get to win his championship back and why did Richard Nixon want to meet with Red over lunch? You mentioned in your story that he had something he wanted to discuss with Red. Did Red and Iris ever have any children? What happened to the two projects Red’s company was building in the World’s Fair? And did Swifty ever get married? Dad, there are so many other questions that beg for answers and yet you left me hanging right in the middle of them.”

Bobby was enjoying the questions his daughter was raising. “Don’t worry, Lynn. There are answers to all of the questions you just asked. It’s just going to take me a little longer to answer them for you. For the time being, you can’t tell me you’re not enjoying my little tale concerning the goings on at the Starlight Club, right?”

Lynn pulled the curtains aside and peeked out the window. “The snow is still falling, Dad. It looks like you’re going to be here for a few more days.” She smiled lovingly at her father. “I’m going to put on a fresh pot of coffee and then I’m going to sit right here beside you and you are going to tell me the rest of the story about the goings on at the Starlight Club.”
