  Chapter One: Unexpected Windfall

I walk Terri to the door of our small apartment and smile before giving her a kiss. “Have fun picking at other people’s teeth,” I joke.

She grins. “Honestly, I’d rather pick at someone else’s teeth than my own. At least I don’t have to worry about my gag reflex when I do that.” My wife, a dental assistant for the last five years, is good at her job. It’s the reason the dentist she works for occasionally gives her small bonuses for performance. We have been thankful for the money, but between the two of us things sometimes get a little tight. That’s why I am hoping that my Bitcoin investments will turn into something bigger one day.

“I’ll be at the restaurant until close tonight. I guess I’ll see you when I get home.”

Terri rolls her eyes. “Yeah, and you’ll smell like rolls and fried foods too.” We both laugh and then kiss again. “Have a good day, baby.”

“You too, my love.” My wife turns and steps into the hallway before closing our apartment door behind her.

I have a couple of hours before I have to get to the restaurant. As the manager, I do have some flexibility in my working hours, but unfortunately we are a bit short handed at the moment. So, I’ve recently found myself having to fill in where normally there would be another cook or dishwasher. This situation shouldn’t last long, but I’m responsible for the restaurant succeeding. If it means that I wash a few dishes, then I will wash a few dishes.

Sitting down at the dining room table, I decide to open up my laptop and check the Bitcoin prices for the day. I’ve been excited recently to see that the value for what I have has been going up steadily. One Bitcoin is currently worth more than thirty thousand dollars, so I own only a fraction of a share of it, along with several other people. I could cash in and see a small profit, but then again I have been advised to hold the course. So, I think I shall do just that.

Each morning, as has become my habit, I check our bank account as well. So, while sipping my coffee, I type in the password and wait for the account screen to load. I nearly choke on my drink as I put down my coffee cup and look closer at the screen.

“What the fuck?” I mutter while looking at the account balance. “No way.” I move the cursor on the laptop screen and click through a few things. “Something’s not right. This can’t be real.” Swallowing hard, I make my way back to the account overview screen. “Where the hell did that hundred-thousand come from?” On most days, we have around two to three thousand dollars in our bank account. Today, however, the account balance total is over one hundred thousand dollars. Never have we had so much money at once in our bank account.

“I know there’s something wrong. A banking error, maybe?” I scroll through the page and find a help tab. After opening the chat dialogue box, I request to speak to a bank teller online. It takes only a minute or so to get one.

“Hello, this is Jason with First National Bank. How may I help you today, Layden?” Good, he can see my account. Maybe he can help me resolve whatever has happened.

“Hey, Jason. I have a question about my account balance. Is there any way that you could verify it for me?” My heart races as I finish typing the message to the bank teller.

“Sure, I can do that. For security purposes, can you give me your six-digit PIN?” I respond in the box below his message and send it through. “Thank you for that, Layden. I’ll give you an account balance in a moment. Please bear with me.” Another minute passes before he sends me the next message. “Your account balance, as of nine o’clock this morning, is $102,349.59.”

I swallow hard. “Are you sure this is correct? I mean, there’s a lot of money in there.”

“Yes, the account balance matches. Everything seems to be in order. Do you see a discrepancy?” I begin to wonder if I should be honest with Jason after reading his latest message. What if the bank has made a mistake and then decides to withdraw the extra one hundred grand when I tell them about it? It would be an opportunity lost.

“It looks fine,” I answer him as my fingers quake across the keyboard. “All good.”

“Excellent. Will there be anything else that I can help you with today?”

“No, thank you. Have a good day.” My face begins to get hot as I offer him the cordiality. Am I a thief? Have I just taken money from the bank?

“They put it there, you didn’t take it,” I tell myself as I breathe hard. “It’s your money now and they can’t come after you for something that they put there. You have this message with the bank teller to prove it.” Though I don’t feel completely convinced by my own reasoning on the error, it does make me feel a little better about keeping the money.

Opening another tab, I go to a banking website where I have an account that I keep for any investing I might do in Bitcoin and otherwise. Terri is aware of the existence of this account and approves of my putting up to two hundred dollars into it every month to support my desire to try to make money on the stock market. However, she would probably freak out if she knew about the money in our account at this very moment.

After opening the second accountant’s page, I begin the process of transferring the money into it from the first bank. My hands grow clammy as I punch in the required information. Though excited at the thought of having real money to invest with, I begin to worry that what I’m doing might be somehow illegal under federal law. After all, I have heard that moving anything more than ten grand around immediately gets reported to the IRS and other government agencies. What if I get caught and sent to prison?

“Stop it,” I say under my breath as I complete the transfer of the money. “They don’t come after people for moving their own money around. The online teller says it’s your money.” Pursing my lips together, I close the two banks’ webpages and then turn off the lapto
p. Standing from my seat, I walk slowly toward the kitchen to get me a drink of water.

“Annuities? Money markets?” My mind spins with the ideas that I have to invest the newly-obtained cash. “Shit, what will I tell Terri? What if she freaks out about it?” I take a drink and then put the glass of water down on the countertop as I sit back against the sink. “I can’t tell her, can I? If she finds out, she’ll want to call the bank and try to fix things. Terri won’t want anything to do with the money.” I shake my head as I walk out of the kitchen and into the living room. After having a seat on the sofa, I lean back in hopes that I will be able to relax a little before work. Unfortunately, my body has other plans. Goosebumps form along the back of my neck and I begin to shake almost uncontrollably as I consider the amount of money I now have access to. For the first time in my life, I feel at least somewhat financially independent. I just wish that I could share the news of this windfall with my wife. There’s no way that can happen, though. Terri would never come to accept that we have just fallen into money. It’s not in her nature.

My cell phone buzzes in my shirt pocket and I reach in to look it over. My wife has sent me a text message, so I open it up to read what it says. “Hey, I got to work a minute ago. I just want to tell you that I love you and I hope you have an awesome day, Layden. I can’t wait to see you after you get home from work tonight!” The message is followed by the image of three colored hearts. Smiling to myself, I answer in kind to her and put my phone back inside my pocket.

“Things will be great for us soon, honey. I promise you. Just wait and see.” I begin to see the money in the bank as a way to make things so much better for my beautiful wife. She deserves to live like a queen, and I want to give that to her. It doesn’t matter how the money got there, it’s there. What matters is what I can do with it now that I have it. Hopefully, Terri and I will soon be much better off financially than we are now.

  Chapter Two: A Great Investment

My day starts at eleven o’clock in the morning and it will last for more than twelve hours as I sit and work on the day’s receipts so far. Lunch rush will be at a fast pace in the next quarter-hour, so I have a limited amount of time to get things straightened up in the office before helping to cook some of the meals. My next act as manager today, though, will be to take a walk through the dining room to make certain everything is clean and in order for the lunchtime rush.

“Mr. Bellington,” I say with a smile as I walk up to his table. Peter Bellington is an investment advisor at a small firm just down the street from my restaurant. “How are things today?”

The middle-aged man looks up and smiles at me. “All is well in my part of the world. How are things for you, Layden?”

“Bitcoin is up,” I say with some glee. “And it looks like it’s going to keep going up over the near term.”

He nods his head. “Sure, it’s up now, but will it be up in a year? Or in two years? You know, you should be careful of things that are imaginary.”

“It’s a real thing,” I reply with a chuckle. “As real as these electronic stocks nowadays.”

Mr. Bellington nods. “I suppose you’re right. It’s just such a new thing, though. Maybe it will continue to hold its value, but I’m not putting my money into it.”

“I hope so,” I reply while nodding my head. After some thought, I ask, “Would you have any suggestions on anything else that a guy should look at investing into? I mean, if he has real money.”

  “Real money?”

“You know, like...thousands or even ten-thousands of dollars.”

Peter Bellington raises an eyebrow. “Ten thousand?” I nod my head. “Are we talking about you or someone you know?”

I reach down and pull out the other chair at his small table and have a seat with him. It’s not the sort of thing that I would normally do as the restaurant’s manager, but if I’m going to talk business with the man I need to do so eye-to-eye. “I have a hundred thousand that I’m looking to invest soon.” My voice shakes as I make the proclamation.

“How much?” The investment advisor looks around the restaurant as if there might be a camera and a crew of people ready to jump out and say, GOTCHA!

“I’ve just gotten one hundred thousand dollars from an inheritance,” I lie. “And I want to do something with it besides just letting it sit in the bank. Do you have any ideas?”

The other man nods his head. “Are we talking low risk, moderate risk, or high risk?”

I shrug my shoulders. “I don’t know. On the one hand, I don’t want to risk the money at all, but on the other I want to make the most of it. Honestly, it’s money that I never expected to have, so if something happens to part of it, I would be okay with that.”

Mr. Bellington nods his understanding. “So, you’re good with some risk?” I nod my head. “Well, there is this one thing that is really rolling right now. It’s a stock investment in a huge startup company for pharmaceuticals. Even Warren Buffett is investing in it.”

“Buffet? Isn’t he the guru of something?”

“The Oracle of Omaha is what they call him,” the investment advisor replies. “He’s great with being able to predict the next big thing, and from what I hear, this company is going to be huge. They will be working on the next class of vaccines and antiviral treatments for HIV, hepatitis and a whole list of other things.” Mr. Bellington leans toward me. “They have promised to wipe out HIV infections in the next ten to fifteen years.”

“Wow,” I say while shaking my head. “They think they can do that?”

“The new ideas and technology being brought to bear by the new CEO is remarkable. Yes, it looks like they’ll do whatever they can to get there.” He smiles at me. “Of course, there is always some risk involved in anything like this.”

“I can put the entire amount in there?” I ask as I feel my heart pounding inside my chest. “And make a lot back?”

Mr. Bellington nods. “If things go the way they are supposed to go, you could triple or even quadruple your investment in less than a year.” I feel faint as I hear him tell me this. For the first time in my life I’m going to have to decide whether I will invest more than just a few hundred dollars into something. Putting so much money into a new company might seem crazy, but if Warren Buffet is doing it, so should I. Why not?

“Can you get me set up?” I ask the advisor. “To put that money in?”

“Today?” I nod my head. “Sure, I can get you started.” He pulls out a vest wallet where he finds a business card. After flipping it over, Mr. Bellington tells me, “Just put whatever information that you have for the funds there. I’ll see that things get transferred as soon as I get back to the office.”

“My bank account number and all of that?”

“Yeah, all of that,” he tells me. “We have an automated system that can get all of that done for you. Of course, you’ll have to come by the office sometime later today and sign some paperwork for that amount of money.”

I smile nervously. “I understand. That won’t be a problem.” As I write down the information, I think about what I could do with all the money that will likely be made due to this investment. Though not an avid investor, I have followed some of what has been happening in the pharmaceutical industry for a while. People are getting older and there is a strain on companies to produce enough medications and other things needed to treat them. By getting in on the ground floor of an investment like this, I am possibly going to earn far more than anyone who waits until the company has been in place for several years. All I have to do is wait and collect the money when it begins to roll in. Excitement begins to build inside me as I push the card back across the table to Mr. Bellington.

“I’ll get that processed as soon as I get back to the office. All one hundred thousand, right?” I nod my head. “Good. Hopefully by this time next year you’ll be treating me to dinner at your own restaurant, Layden.”

“That would be great,” I admit. “My own boss with my own hours. I could
finally order around a manager instead of being the manager.” Excited, I stand to my feet. “I had better get back to work for now, Mr. Bellington. Thank you for the tip. I look forward to seeing some great things over the next few months.”
