Dimmest Of Night (Dimmest Of Night Series) Page 18

by Jennifer Anderson

Rose looked at me smiling, “Black wings, just like your father.” She winked at me happily.

  Smiling, “They are beautiful.”

“I can’t believe this. How could we have not known?” Gabriel said in awe, staring at me.

“Very few knew Gabriel.” Rose said, her gaze going to the corner just before Alexander appeared.

Stepping up towards me, “I see you have made your decision.” He said staring at my wings in contemplation he swung his gaze back to my eyes. “I must take you now. Gabriel, I will be in contact with you for your next assignment.”

“Just one second.” I said walking away from Alexander. Leaning down and giving Rose a hug, “Thank you so much. I will never forget what you’ve done.

“I can’t take all the credit dear.” She said glancing at Alexander. He just looked away uncomfortably.

Walking over to Gabriel I hugged him tight. “I will miss you Romeo.” Smiling at him.

“Take care of him.” He whispered squeezing me, before releasing me.

Turning and walking over to Alexander. “Okay. I’m ready. Where are you taking me?”

“You’ll see. But we have to hurry. You’re going to get a crash course in teleporting. Retract your wings.” He said standing directly in front of me.

Looking back at them, “I don’t know how.” Smiling at me, it was the first time I had ever seen him smile and it made him even more handsome, and more likable. Taking his arms, he pushed them in and to my side.

“Now just concentrate on relaxing your back muscles.” He said waiting a second before he let go and they popped back out, expanding.

“I’m sorry.” I said now embarrassed.

“It’s fine. We’ll work on that. You will have a teacher.”

Stepping in close to me, this time he wrapped his arms around me and pushed them down, holding me close.

“Ready?” Alexander asked looking down at me.

  “Will it hurt?”

  “No.”

“I’m ready.” Sucking in a deep breath, I watched Gabriel slipping out of view. His hand was raised sadly in a goodbye.

The only thing I could hear was what sounded like wind rushing in my ears. The only thing I could see was a bright, white blur.

When we finally came to a stop, my feet hit a white marble floor and I fell to my knees.

“You will be alright Carma.” Alexander said releasing me.

“I think I’m going to be sick.” I said doubled over in pain, my head throbbing again.

“It takes some time to get used to.” He said starting to walk away. “I will be back. Do not move.”

“I’m not going anywhere.” Trying to get my gag reflex under control. Pushing my palm to the back of my head, my head was still bleeding a bit, but not nearly as bad. Putting both hands down on the floor I tried to push up to my feet, unsuccessfully.

Alexander strode into the familiar living room of his former friend. Stopping to look at Blane pacing in front of his fireplace.

“What do you want Lex? Back to give me orders already?”

Smirking, “I have repaid my debt. I will be back to retrieve her in five minutes. Do not keep me waiting.”

Looking at him confused, like he had gone completely mad, “What are you talking about?” Blane asked, his temper holding on by a thread.

Alexander lifted his hand and threw open all the doors in between them and the entry way. “Five minutes.” He said disappearing.

Blane looking down the hallway, he seen the familiar jet black hair he missed running his fingers through. His heart speeding up, he ran into the parlor.

Looking up through my misery, “Blane?” I asked my heart happy again.

“Carma?” His eyes swinging to my back where my wings extended out. “How?” He said dropping to his knees, pulling me into his arms.

“I’ve missed you Blane.” Tears streaming down my cheeks. Hugging me close to him now.

“Carma, how did you do this? How did this happen?”

“The dream Blane. That angel. He is my father.” I said looking up into his eyes.

“Your father? You are an angel?” In awe of the situation.

“Yes, Rose told me how to transform, to take my rightful place. To see you again Blane. Soon after, Alexander came to retrieve me.”

Hugging me closer, “This isn’t real. This can’t be real.”

“I chose you Blane. I chose this life.”

“What about Gabriel? Both hands on my cheeks, looking into my eyes.”

“What do you mean?” My excitement dropping a couple of degrees.

“I saw you two embracing. You were beside a bed.”

“Blane, no. No. He was consoling me. I was upset about you, then my apartment got ransacked and then I couldn’t find the picture of my mother. How could you think that?” Shaking my head in disbelief.

“I am just unaware of your feelings Carma.”

“I am no more aware of yours Blane.”

Pulling my head into his chest he held me close, “You look even more beautiful than I could have ever imagined. I can’t believe I didn’t know.” Pulling me back to get another good look at me. Looking at his hand, “Your bleeding. Are you alright?”

“I’m fine. We had a run in with a demon today. He got me from behind.”

Clenching his fists, “I knew it was to soon for them to take me away from you. Listen to me Carma. I have to tell you this.” Grabbing both of my hands and looking into my eyes, he looked stressed.

Materializing behind him, Alexander walked up looking at me.

“Times up Blane. I have to take her.”

Blane looking behind him and then back at me.

“What? No.” Shaking my head, this was not the deal. “I’m not leaving Blane. No.” Alexander looking rather unhappy at me.

“Maybe you should tell her briefly why it is not good to tell me no.” Alexander replied to Blane.

“I’ll tell her when I start figuring it out.” He quipped, turning to look at me now.

“You have to go. Every new angel has to see The High Council, Carma.”

“What? Will I be back?” Now anger turning to fear.

“I don’t know when angel girl. You will be assigned to an angel to train you.” Blane said with sadness in his eyes.

“How long?” The dread in my stomach weighing me down.

Blane just looked up at Alexander, stood and stepped back.

“I will find out.” Alexander said to Blane.

Alexander stepped forward, wrapping his arms around my wings, he pulled me in close. I could see the displeasure in Blane’s face and I didn’t want to leave. I wanted to beg him to stay. Looking at him with tears in my eyes, he was disappearing from my view and I tried to reach out for him before he left my view completely.

Moments later we were dropping in front of a huge building with steps that went up into white marble floors. “Alexander, will I ever see him again?”

Grabbing me by the arm and leading, “Yes, I suspect you will.”

“Well how long does it take to train?”

Pulling me along, “Months, sometimes years. This all depends on the student and their abilities.”

I wanted to cry, to scream and yell at the injustice. I couldn’t wait months to see Blane again. I most definitely couldn’t wait years.

“You will say nothing of Blane, Carma. You will bow when we go in and stay on one bended knee. You will not back talk to the Council and you will only speak when spoken to. Do you understand? I am not telling you this because they are only idle rules. You must obey them or reap the consequences. Now they will be a little more lenient due to you being a new angel, but I advice you not to push your luck. The more obedient you are, the faster you will get out of there. Got it?”

My mind trying to absorb everything he was telling me, “Bow, stay on one knee, shut up. Got it.”

Laughing, and shaking his head. “I can see why my old friend is so enamored with you.”

  Looking at him, “How enamored?”

“I think that question is best left for Blane to answer. Now quiet we are getting ready to enter.”

Following in behind him, we walked through massive double doors into the biggest room that I had ever seen. Everything was white and gold, looking forward there was a huge balcony that extended up several feet. Seated were several angels. They looked every bit of magnificent as Blane and Alexander does.

Walking forward, my gaze went to the angel in the middle that was standing. He had long black hair, and black wings like I did. Looking closer he looked familiar and my breath hitched in my throat. Alexander squeezed my arm in warning as we continued on walking.

Just as I thought I was going to get myself in massive trouble a voice sounded in my head.

“My child, it is me, your father. Do not say a word Carma, no one must know. Please child, trust me.”

Looking up at him, he had a sincere look on his face and I had so many questions. I needed to know so many things, fear in my heart kept my mind silent.

“Please child. I love you. I have always loved you. I will explain everything. Later.”

“Okay.” Was the only reply I gave him in my head before Alexander made us come to a stop and I bent down on one knee.

“Carma Danielson, you have chosen to be brought here into the Heavens to help the human race. You are to follow our rules, our way of living and help humans to the best of our abilities. Do you understand our mission?”

My father looking down on me, “Yes.” I gritted out between clenched teeth. I was now back to being mad. Mad at the man, or angel or whatever he was for abandoning me. Leaving me to fend for myself with these painful abilities.

“You will be assigned to another for training of your abilities. You will also be taught all of our rules. Do you agree to this?”

“Yes.” Trying to be the obedient little angel Alexander told me to be. Wanting so badly to get out of the chambers.

“Very well. The angel who is to train and guide you onto our path will be Blane.” He said looking down on me. My heart softened at that moment. The chambers came alive with chatter between everyone.

An angel at the very end of the column spoke up first, “Are you sure that is a good idea Capac? He has not been back for very long and you know how disobedient he is.”

Capac, that was my fathers name? Hoping that they wouldn’t change his mind.

“He was good enough to protect her on earth, he is good enough to guide her here.” He said matter of fact, making everyone shut their mouths. “She trusts him, and we all know we have never had anyone with her abilities before. It is my choice to make. I have made it.”

“Thank you.” I said in my head as he looked down on me again with pride in his eyes.

“My gift to you child. I will come to you soon, when it is safe.” His voice rang in my head again.

“Yes.” I said back to him.

Addressing the whole Council and us again, “Alexander, you will take her back to Blane’s. You are dismissed.”

Turning away from us, I caught a glimpse of those massive wings and the black hair I dreamed about all those years and I wanted to cry with joy in that moment. My emotions all over the map the last two days, I didn’t know up from down anymore.

Grabbing my arm, Alexander lifted me up onto my feet walking quickly with me out of the doors.

“Don’t say a word Carma. Don’t look back. You just got your wish and you don’t want to give them a reason to take it away.” He said hurrying along with me.

Keeping my mouth shut, I didn’t even respond. I don’t think I took a breath until the chamber doors shut behind us.

“I don’t know what just happened in there, but you are extremely lucky.” Alexander said wrapping his arms around me, pushing my wings down at my side.

“It seems that I may have an angel looking out for me.” I said smiling, ready to get back to my love.

“It appears so. For once, I am looking forward to bringing you to your guide.” That feeling took me over again, and each time was getting easier and easier. The nausea not near as bad as it was.

Our feet hitting the floor again, I bent down on one knee taking a deep breath. Looking up, Blane was pacing in the room in front of me. Walking over to us with dread on his face.

“What happened Alexander? Is she being sent for punishment for something? I swear if it’s your fault…”

“Glad to see you again also Blane. Here is your new assignment Blane.” He said lifting me up by the arm and pushing me into Blane’s arms.

“What? You better not be lying to me Alexander.” Blane said with hope in his eyes.

“It would seem that you two have luck on your side. You are her guide Blane. I will check up on you in a couple of weeks for her report.” Alexander smiled.

  “We’re even Lex.”

Alexander bowed his head and he was gone.

Turning around and looking into Blane’s familiar dark eyes.

“What happened Carma? How can this be?” He smiled down at me, his hands on my face.

“I was told not to tell anyone else, this is between you and me.” I said still shaky from all of the events.

  “Yes?”

  “Capac.”

“Yes, what about him?” He is the head of The Council and one of the most feared.

  “He is my father.”

Taking a step back, “What? How do you know?”

“He told me. He spoke to me in my head. I recognized him from my dream. He is my father. He made this happen. It was his decision that you be my guide.” I said tears building behind my eyes.

Pulling me into his arms again, “I don’t even know what to say.”

  “Blane?”

  “Yes Carma?”

“Can the first thing you teach me is to retract my wings?”

Laughing, “Yes. I will teach you.”

  Smiling, “Okay.”

  “Carma?”

  “Yes Blane?”

“I’m ready to show you how I feel. Words are cheap.” Taking his hands and placing them on each side of my head, emotions started flooding in my head. The most prominent, love and longing. Desire and pride. Taking his hands away from my head and holding me closer.

“I love you angel girl. I love you. I want you forever by my side.”

The tears falling faster down my face. Truth. I could hear the truth ring clear in his voice and for the first time I was really loved.

Smiling, “I love you to Blane. I have always loved you. I wish I could show you to.”

Smiling back at me, “You can.”

Taking my hands and putting them on both sides of his face, concentrate on how your feeling and project it out the same way your empath abilities absorb them in.

Concentrating my hardest, I sent him flying across the room. He rolled and landed on bended knee. “Oh no. I’m sorry. I’m sorry. I don’t know what I did wrong.” I said aggravated.

Shaking his head and smirking, “Oh yeah, lessons over for the day. You are very strong Carma. I felt exactly how much you love me…..um magnified.” Laughing and rubbing his forehead. Walking over to me, he grabbed my hands. “I never thought someone like you would come into my existence. When I left I thought I would never see you again. I can’t tell you how I felt. No words could ever do the pain I felt justice. We are never going to be apart again. I will protect you for all eternity.”

“And I you.” Smiling back at him.

  Epilogue

  6 Months Later

Waking up everyday next to Blane is by far the best feeling in the world. My father, Capac comes to visit often, and has done his best to re-enter my life.

He tells me stories of how once my mother was his assignment, how they fell in love and how nine months later I came along. Being with Blane has helped me understand more on why he had to leave and I am starting to come to terms with my anger.

Blane has been incredibly patient and I couldn’t ask f
or a better guide to train me. I am now able to turn my abilities on and off and I can discern lies, whether angel or demon alike are shielding themselves. He has made me promise not to tell anyone of that fact, worried that something bad may happen to me. I don’t know what that may be, but I just take his word for it and I keep my mouth shut. When it comes to that ability I was never that forthcoming, even when I was human.

Alexander and Blane seem to have come to an understanding, and are now civil to each other. Lex comes around every couple weeks and checks on my progress, seemingly happy each time with the results. Although, the angel can be terrifying, you can’t help but to respect him. I never thought I would meet another angel that is as closed up as Blane was, Alexander is that exception. It was hard gauging any sort of emotion from him and usually when I start to get something, he is gone before I can make a conclusion.

Turning over to my side, I was doing my best to try to sleep at night. Since I have become an angel I am no longer required to sleep, only trying to under the strictest of orders.

Blane staring into my eyes and smiling, his hand went down to my belly.

“How is my little girl?” He asked bending over and giving my stomach a kiss.

“She is using my ribs for a jungle gym.” I said smiling down into his dark eyes.

“She’s going to be so beautiful, just like her mama.”

Sighing, “Are you sure there is nothing the Council will do to you? I don’t want her growing up without her father like I did.” My worries hitting me again.

“Hey, you know you’re not supposed to be getting stressed Carma. I am sure. Even though I broke the rules, you got pregnant when you were still human. We have already taken the unbreakable vows. There is absolutely nothing they can do.”

“If they knew my father helped us get around the rules, he could be severely punished.” Now worried about him.

“No one will find out. Just as long as we never breath a word of it, no one will be any the wiser. It’s okay sweetheart.” His hand stroking my face with concern. “Our little girl is going to grow up in the heavens. She is never going to have to struggle to understand her abilities. She is going to be a happy little girl. When she comes of age, she can decide if she wants to be an angel or be human.”
