  Part of him found, in light of what he planned to do, that this strange behavior was somehow appropriate. He washed the meat pie down with a swallow of beer from a bottle his foot had discovered on the car floor. The beer was warm and flat. Ramon made a face.

  Then he remembered his purpose and steeled himself to his task. He passed the early, evening hours sitting in the car, concentrating on what he would have to say and do during the ceremony. And while he rehearsed and rehearsed, the inhabitants of Liberte bedded down for the night.

  Very soon the moon was high and bright. It seemed to smile on Ramon and Ramon smiled back. It was as if the Baka was there, guiding him. As if his desire was acceptable to the invisibles. As if they would protect him on this special night.
