Mage Emergence Page 32

by Christopher George

I tighten my grip on Victor, and smile when I finally hear a jet passing overhead and the screaming of a rocket. I don’t turn to face it. Victor cries out - he can see his forthcoming death and how I had achieved it.

I wonder if it will hurt. There is no chance of survival; with our bodies incinerated the magic will increase its fury in regenerating us. Over and over our cells will die and regrow.

The explosion is about to take effect. With such catastrophic damage our bodies will absorb all available Mana in an attempt to renew our damaged cells. It will require too much power and it will consume everything in its path. As our power fails, so will the healing that is keeping us alive. Necrosis will follow as the flesh fails us and we will finally be allowed to die.

Will it hurt? I close my eyes as the inferno engulfs us. My last sight before my eyes are forever consumed in flame is of Victor. He has grasped my head and pulled me to face him.

  “Why?” he howls in agony.

  “Because I’m a villain, but I’m not…”

I never got the chance to finish that sentence.

  The End.
