He grabbed a towel on his way out of the bathroom drying off before he went to the closet. He ignored his more professional clothes and went with something that screamed not a doctor. He stepped into a pair of dark gray jeans and paired it up with a with a tight-fitting white tee. He’d slipped on his lab coat which were still popular in this century. It looked good paired with his gray jeans. He left the house willing himself into the garage where his hover sat. In no time at all he was lowering the hover through the atmosphere watching as he passed through the different levels. Traffic was light, so it didn’t take him that long to reach the surface of the earth. He made a U-turn there was no traffic to stop him, and headed towards the Medical Facility. The roads were empty, and he gave the hover permission to run wild. It ate up the distance between where he was and the medical facility. A smile touched his lips as his eyes lit up, the speed of the car releasing some of the tension that was in his arms.

His head turned to the right. He thought he saw a blackness so dark in the corner of his eyes that it could have been The Darkness. That was foolish the Darkness had come after his brother Mick and Jaz, Mick’s mate. Together they had defeated The Darkness. They hadn’t shared how; Damon wasn’t sure if they knew how they did it. Either way, they were one of the lucky ones. The Darkness hated failure.

He shrugged his shoulders again the weight back along with an itch in the center of his back that informed him someone was watching him. Slowing the hover down, he pulled into a ground spot. Human’s had become interesting over the centuries; they now felt it was a sign of wealth and prestige to live in the air and not touch the ground.

Damon had no choice his body was designed to live in the air; he would never be able to live on the earth full time. That’s why when he and his brothers designed their homes in the sky they brought as much of the beauty of the Earth up with them. After all these years, he still didn’t understand why humans would give up their planet for air.

The hover closed silently behind him as he walked into the medical facility using the street entrance. He walked down the hallway that was looking dusty making a mental note to see who was supposed to be keeping it clean. He stepped on a lift and mentally inputted the floor he wanted. He told it to take him to the main hub.

He got off to find confusion on the floor.

“She died again!” a nurse said as she ran down the hallway.

“Is she still dead?” another asked pulling up the feed to a room.

“No, she’s throwing up sea water.” a doctor said coming out a room up the corridor.

“How’s that possible none of the seas are viable anymore.”

“Tell that to the young lady who keeps dying.”

Damon stood still taking in all the confusion. He blended in with the shadow so no one would be able to see him.

The floor was large with an area for the nurses and doctors to gather around. Each room had a vid screen as well as a monitor to check the patient’s vital signs. This place reminded him of his medbay since he designed it along those lines. The corridors were wider than in a normal facility; he always felt that doctors, nurses, and patients needed room to move. Since his doctors were required to run to a room where there was an issue the wide corridors helped.

Dr. Atil walked out the patient’s room. “She’s stable for now.” She made a general announcement cutting down on some of the chaos that was going on.

“When’s the specialist coming?” The nurse who had been running earlier asked.

“Dr. A’rouk said he would be here soon.”

Dr. Atil was getting older Damon hadn’t seen her in several years. Her hair was beginning to turn colors from black to silver while her brown eyes were beginning to show stress. She picked up several pounds but in his opinion, it made better looking. The time was quickly approaching that he would have to hire help for her and maybe convince her to take it easy enjoy life, but it wouldn’t be today.

He walked past her and headed into the patient's room.

  Chapter Two

The door closed behind Damon shutting out all the noise in the hallway. He stood in the shadows that surrounded the bed. His feet were frozen as the scent in the room overwhelmed him. He smelled this same combination when he stood on the beach and watched the endless flow of the ocean. It was mind numbing and cock hardening at the same time. He looked down to confirm what he already knew. He was going to think of it as empirical evidence.

He looked at the door once thinking this was his last chance to escape as he felt his life spinning out of control. The need to leave died, overruled by the need to see who laid in the bed ahead of him. With a silent curse, his feet moved taking him where he shouldn’t go. Although the room was in shadows, he could see it perfectly. To one side was a seating area with two plush armchairs and a nice little table between them. They were in front of a large window. On the other side of the room was a bathroom, with a small closet next to it. In the middle of the room was a wide bed surrounded by the equipment the doctors and nurses used daily to preserve life.

In that bed was a beautiful female who had his heart beating and the palms of his hands sweating. He was Created he had never sweated until now. As he approached the bed a sigh of relief left his lips, the female was curled up into a ball, her head tucked under the cover. It was a reprieve; one he wouldn’t have long to savor.

Instead of messing with fate. He started checking the monitors around him. Reviewing them, he watched her die her face in the shadows but the death undeniable. He saw when her body came back to life almost as if she were being shocked from the inside. Then copious amounts of seawater flowed from her mouth, enough that it should have killed her again.

“What are you?” He whispered as his fingers played over the screens looking for answers.

When he found what he sought, he dismissed it and started over. He did this five times until finally, he had no choice but to believe what the data was telling him. The female in front of him was human; she was also disturbing. She carried a few of the markers in her body that Jaz carried, but she wasn’t a clone. She was a mystery. Who exactly were these human females and where had they come from? More importantly where had the female in front of him come from and why was she dying repeatedly.”

He stuck his hand into his pocket and pulled out his medical scanner; it was a small handheld device that was more sensitive than anything the medical center was equipped with. He ran it over the covered female not needing to see her for the scanner to work.

The medical scanner picked up an anomaly in her body. There was something artificial inside of her that was killing her, and maybe producing the seawater too. He would say it was impossible, but his life thrived on the impossible. Almost any species he ran into told him that it was impossible for him to be alive. The Created which he was one of shouldn’t exist. Damon excelled with the impossible, so he checked her again and made some notes. She would need surgery, no one here including Dr. Atil was skilled enough to handle this. For a minute, he doubted his skills.

Enough, as usual, he would do whatever it took. He sent a quick memo off to Dr. Atil to inform her he was examining the patient, and he had found a possible cause for what was happening. He gave a sigh of relief; there was nothing to be concerned about here. He must have spent too much time around his older brother Mick and his mate Jaz.

The operation he had in mind should be relatively easy although if not done soon he felt she would die and not revive.

More at ease now he reached out and touched her covered shoulder and gently shook her awake.

“Hello,” he gentled his voice not wanting to scare her. “I’m doctor A’rouk, I was called in to help you.”

The form under the cover shook a sure sign she as awake.

“I’m here to help not hurt.” Why was she shaking like a leaf in a storm?

“Can you tell me your name?”

  “Rive…River.”

Damon took a step backward as a flame cut him in half. He doubled
over clutching his mid-section. The sound of her voice set him on fire. What was happening? He tried to reach out to his brothers, but the lines of communications were down. No, he denied going on instinct, this couldn’t be his fate.

Her hand raised to take the cover off and he wanted to scream at her to stop, but his mouth wouldn’t open. No, this can’t be happening to me. His life was formula’s and data and watching others from afar as they fell into the traps of lust and love. He believed in neither. He had a female in sin city who took care of his urge to mate, have sex, rut. It was different things to him on different days, but whatever was underneath that cover could kill him. He needed out of this room fast; he’d call Nicolas back to earth to care for her.

That’s the perfect plan, he reassured himself, now all you have to do is will yourself out the room before she takes that cover off. He was stuck he couldn’t move and he couldn’t will himself away.

“You’re him,” she spoke. “You’re the voice that called to me when I was in the deep dying.”

She sat up, and the covers fell from her. Damon gasped as he looked at her. She had skin so flawless and brown that he wanted to call it bronze. She was beautiful; she sparkled like she brought the sunshine inside with her. He could picture her on the beach her body worshipping the sun while the waves greedily reached for her wanting to caress her. Her stunning gray eyes captured him. For reasons unknown, he was expecting blue, but this was even more true to the body of water he had recently visited. The gray of the sea at night in the middle of a storm.”

He went to his knees feeling like a red-hot knife pierced his brain. He knew better than anyone that his life was ending.

“River…” He reached out a hand wanting to touch her before his life ended.

“What’s your name?” she cried in alarm, trying to get the cover off her body.

“Damon,” he went silent as he watched the males in the shadows coalesce in front of him.

“Ours,” Elandra said. He had made it known that he would take one of the A’rouk brother’s. It seemed that Damon would be the loose end.

  River cried out, “No.”

Elandra turned to look at her. “We’ll be back for you, have no fear, Damon will kill you.”

With an outstretched hand, Elandra and the other minions of Darkness disappeared taking Damon with him.

River collapsed on the bed crying; she had come so close to freedom to achieving more than she ever thought possible, she finally found him. Why did she need him? She didn’t know and didn’t care all that mattered was how he made her heart race, making her feel alive. She’d been dead so long and now in those few glorious minutes, she felt alive, vibrant and strong. It was all gone.

A male stepped out of the shadows. River remembered him and crouched on the bed. He brought her here; he’d been gentle, but she felt he could be ferocious at the same time. To disobey him, to refuse him wouldn’t end well.

“I’ll never hurt you River,” Dante approached her bed. “Not without a reason.”

She nodded, he got the job done and sometimes the means weren’t always nice.

Dante reached out and laid a hand on River’s chest before he closed his eyes.

“Damon’s right you know. You need an operation, those who held you placed a little device unknown to man in your chest, and it will kill you sooner than later. That’s why they called off the hunt for you. They know you have less than twenty-four hours left.”

He gave a deep sigh and looked at her. “One-day River they will stop underestimating me, but it doesn’t look like it will be today.”

Dante pulled up Damon’s frequency and sent a message to Dr. Atil telling her the patient needed immediate care and he was dealing with it. He quarantined her room until he was able to deal with the problem.

“River remember I said I wouldn’t hurt you without a reason?”

She nodded her head, her eyes growing larger the gray in them more pronounced.

  “I have a reason.”

Dante struck putting her to sleep and invading her chest at the same time.

  Extra 2

  Chapter One

Damon stood in the shadows of Sin City and watched as his female went into the arms of another male. There was no jealousy or hatefulness; he was glad about what he was witnessing. He would never come to her again because his time was over. There wasn’t a note hanging on his door telling him that death was stalking him, but he could read the signs.

Since he came back from the beach with his family, he had no interest in having his basic urges met. That was deadly in a male like him. Even knowing this he couldn’t force himself to touch a female. Somewhere between the time he left home and the time he came back he had an encounter with his mate. Right now, he felt the urge to search, but he hadn’t interacted with another soul besides his family the whole time he was away.

There were only two females with them. His brothers Mick’s mate, Jaz and Ash’s mate, Brook. He knew for a fact that neither of them was his mate. The one bit of relief he felt was that The Darkness hadn’t come to collect his soul. That could only mean one thing; he had been in the vicinity of his mate, but he hadn’t laid eyes on her. Not that it helped him because his body was demanding he find her, touch her, mate with her.

The female that used to be his walked off with the male, his hand firmly planted in her skirt.

“I take it you're tired of her? Moving on?” Eli had walked up behind Damon not bothering to muffle his footsteps because it didn’t seem to matter how softly he walked around The Created they heard him.

“I’m moving on.” He wouldn’t tell Luc about the curse or the fact that he needed his mate. One look at the other male told him he was suspecting more than he should.

“There are some new females that just moved in. I believe one or two of them would be to your liking.”

Damon shook his head. If Eli said he would like them, then he would like them. He knew his business as well as he knew the males and females that visited his city. It didn’t matter anymore; the only female Damon would like was his mate. Things were going to get ugly fast if he didn’t meet her. Of course, things would be worse if he did because The Darkness would be coming after him.

“Thanks, Eli, but I’m not interested in meeting any new females.”

“You’ll be interested in this one trust me.”

Damon turned to get a better look at Eli. He wore a cloak to hide who he was from the world. Most people accepted the image in front of them. Tall, average looking, bland blue eyes and pale skin. Damon wasn’t most people, and he could see through his façade, but he made a note never to tell the male.

Reluctantly he turned to follow him.

  *~*~*~*

The ocean floor was a marvel of sea life. The dark green phytoplankton spread its fingers wide as the leaves danced in the current of the water and welcomed the plentiful multi-colored zooplankton that crawled over it and swam around it. Schools of fish swam lazily around in all the bright colors making the floor of the ocean one of the most beautiful places on Earth as well as one of the few places that wasn't touched by the alien-human war.

River wished she could enjoy what she was seeing. Instead, she struggled in the restraints that kept her in place. They weren’t man made or even something she could see with her eyes, but they were just as powerful and gave her limited movement. There were times when she was able to slip the restraints and then she would swim towards the surface her muscles cramping, while her body filtered water only to be stopped those last few precious inches away from the surface by a manacle on her ankle.

If asked she would have said it was her captor’s idea of a cruel joke one they continued to play on her. One she continued to fall for because one day she would escape.

Freedom had become more important the moment she heard that male voice sinking through the layers of the ocean to touch her body making it come alive. For centuries she was kept at the bottom of the ocean, although she fought for freedom the
re was no real hope. She had almost reached freedom several thousand times or was that several million times? It didn’t matter she still struggled, but after a while, the belief that she would be free was slowly eroded by the struggle.

Being held captive would continue to be her life, she was almost content with it; then she heard his voice. It rang with light and dark tones and played melodies using the ocean as background for its song of joy. When she first heard it, she stood and danced to the voice because it was so compelling. Her body that she thought dead rose up with joy and the fact that she was female and human covered her like a cloak of gladness. She waited impatiently for that voice every day that came to her soothing her with its beautiful notes. That voice made her believe that she could be free, live a true life again. Then it was gone.

The sorrow was debilitating. She laid on the ocean floor for a week refusing to get up to eat the small food that came her way. She had learned centuries ago what small animals and what plant life was edible. If she were ever to escape the word sushi would forever be stricken from her vocabulary.

River had also learned you did what you needed to do when life was the only thing you had to cling onto. Now she was alone again. Not totally alone her tormentors were here, the ones who kept her restrained and took joy in her captivity. They not only restrained her, but they also killed her. How many times had she died? Her shoulders shrugged death had become the one thing she no longer feared. One day she would die and never revive.

Death started in her midsection; her intestines tightened, and pain gripped her making her bend over. The coldness of the ocean sank into her bones. Her arms began to shake as she began to feel feverish. How could she be so hot when she was freezing? Her bodily systems began to shut down one by one. When she was lucky, her heart stopped first.
