Taking A Chance Page 11

“No, not tonight honey. We hardly see you anymore.” Dad said to me.

“I just need to let her know that I can’t go.” I said, picking my phone back up.

“Rose, put that phone down!” Mum said, sternly. “You can send her a message thing in a minute.” I placed my phone back down and looked up to see Amelia on hers.

“What about her?” I said, pointing to Amelia. When Mum and Dad looked at her she hid her phone under the table. She was definitely one for making me look like the bad person. I needed to get out of here and away from her. I would be glad when she went to university next year. I wondered if Jacob was going away to uni. That wasn’t something we had discussed.

Once tea was finished, I loaded up the dishwasher and Mum and Dad got out a selection of films for us to watch as a family. I grabbed the popcorn and made my way into the front room. Dad put on the first one as I sent a quick text to Jacob.

I can’t go to the party. Have fun. xxx

It won’t be the same without you. See you tomz? xxx

  Yeah xxx

  “Where’s Amelia?” I asked.

“She is getting ready to go out.” Mum said, cuddling up to Dad on the sofa.

“What?” I shouted. “How come she is allowed to go out but I can’t?”

  “She’s eighteen, sweetie.” Mum replied.

“I can’t believe this… I’ll be eighteen soon and I can’t wait.” Me and Amelia were always the same age for a month, as Mum had got pregnant pretty much straight away after Amelia was born.

“See you all later.” Amelia called out from the front door. I looked up to see her in jeans and a fitted top, she had a bag with her and I bet that had a slutty dress in it that she would change into once she was out of the house. This way she was still being the perfect little daughter.

I stayed and watched two films with Mum and Dad to keep them happy.

“I’m going to bed.” I said, yawning and stretching.

“Rose, we are pleased that you no longer see that boy… You have been a better person for it.” Mum told me.

“Really? How is that?” I asked. I was intrigued by what they would say.

“You have been concentrating on your school work, spending time with Bonnie. While you were with him, you didn’t see her as much…”

“Yes, I did. We all hung out together.”

“You don’t seem to fight with your sister as much… We’re pleased. We just want what’s best for you.” I wanted to defend him, to tell them that they were wrong. I was a better person for being with him these last couple of months. I wanted them to know that I was in love with him and wanted to move in with him. Not that I had discussed that with him, but I’m sure he wouldn’t object. I needed to say something, to get a feel on how they felt about the situation, see if they would give him another chance.

“I’m not over him… I want him back.” I told them.

“Don’t be ridiculous. There are plenty more out there.” Mum told me.

“What if he is the one for me?” I asked her.

“Is that what you think princess?” Dad asked. I nodded.

“I’m not interested in anyone else and neither is he.”

“Have you seen him? Do you talk to him?” Mum asked, she sounded angry at the thought.

“No, Bonnie talks to Matt. Matt lives with Jacob and his brother.”

“He is not the one for you.” Mum said turning back to the TV. That was her way of saying the conversation was over. I walked into my bedroom and flopped down onto my bed, it was still early but I thought the sooner I went to sleep the sooner I would be awake and seeing Jacob, even if I had to walk to his place.

  Goodnight, miss you xxx

I climbed into bed with my phone in my hand waiting for him to text me back, I hadn’t had a message so I checked to see if the one I sent had actually sent. It had, it was unlike Jacob not to reply. He was at a party, so he probably hadn’t heard his phone. I was sure he would text me when he got in, I would wake up to a message from him.

  ***

I had woken up early as I wanted to see Jacob. I now knew where they kept the spare key, so I could go and surprise him by crawling into bed with him. I got up and checked my phone, it was eight in the morning and I still hadn’t heard anything from him. I grabbed a quick shower, got dressed and decided I would have breakfast with my sexy man, maybe he could be on the menu. The thought of that alone had me squeezing my thighs together to relieve some of the pressure I seemed to have worked up.

I opened my door quietly as I didn’t want to wake Mum and Dad; they normally had a lie in on Sundays. As I was about to walk past Amelia’s room her door opened and I stopped.

“What are you doing up so early?” I asked her.

  “Oh, I need to sneak someone out.” She whispered, giggling. I looked over her shoulder and saw a muscly dark haired guy; he was asleep and laying on his front. Before I got too close a look Amelia smirked and said;

“I knew he wouldn’t be able to resist me for long.”

  “Who?”

  “J.”

I backed away from her room shaking my head, no, she had to be lying. That couldn’t be my boyfriend in there, it looked similar to him but I’d only got a quick look. As I made my way to the stairs I could hear Amelia laughing behind me. I felt sick; I needed to get out of there before I threw up everywhere. I yanked the door open and ran around the corner into what felt like a muscled wall. I looked up and saw Jacob standing in front of me. I broke down, fell to the floor and cried.

“Babe, what is it? What’s wrong?” He asked, crouching down in front of me, trying to calm me down.

  “What are you doing here?”

“I came to pick you up… I was going to ring you and tell you I was outside and if that didn’t work I was going to climb in through your bedroom window and climb into bed with you. Now, what’s wrong?”

  “Amelia.”

  “What has she done?”

  “She bought someone home with her, all I saw was dark hair, and she told me it was you.” I cried harder and Jacob lifted me into his arms and walked me to his car. He placed me in the passenger side and then once he was in, he turned towards me and said;

“Look at me.” I didn’t turn my head. “Rose.” He said in a warning tone. I wiped my eyes the best I could and looked at him. “I would NEVER do that to you… I thought you knew that, I thought you trusted me.”

“I do trust you… I guess I just couldn’t believe what my eyes had seen… You were at a party last night and so was she.”

“She wasn’t at the same one as me, besides I left early… I was probably in bed by ten, so I could come and see you early.”

“Really? Is that why you didn’t reply to my message?” I asked. I was feeling calmer now; I think the shock got to me.

“I haven’t got a message babe… Come on, let’s go and get back into bed.” I nodded; that sounded like a great idea.

  Chapter 18

Jacob and I spent the best part of the day in bed. Bonnie had text me to ask how I was feeling since finding out about Jacob’s fighting. I was surprisingly ok with it, that is until he has to go off and fight, then I would probably be a nervous wreck waiting for him. He had promised that either he or Matt would always ring me as soon as the fight was over so I knew that he was ok. I wanted to talk to Bonnie about Matt too, she always said about how much she hated him and then I heard them going at it in his room. I didn’t want her to regret what she was doing and if she did in fact have feelings for him I didn’t want her pushing him away.

“I’m meeting Bonnie for coffee and then I’m going to have a word with Amelia.” I told Jacob while watching him shower.

“You sure you don’t wanna join me first?” He asked, opening the shower door.

“If I step in there, I won’t be leaving for at least an hour and Bonnie is already on her way to the coffee shop.”

“If you wait five minutes I can give you a lift.”

  “I don
’t mind walking.”

“Babe, when are you going to learn to drive?” He kissed me quickly on the lips and then rinsed his hair. He was so hot; his back muscles were twitching with the movements of his arms.

“Uh… I’m not interested in driving. Maybe one day.” I shrugged my shoulders. “I gotta go. See you later.” I went to leave the bathroom door.

“Hold it right there.” He said. I turned around and he was wrapping a towel around his waist, droplets of water were running down his chest and stomach and I just wanted to lick them all off. I licked my lips as I was thinking about it. “You finished?” He chuckled.

  “Hmm? What?”

“Come here.” I walked towards him and he lifted me to sit on the sink; it wasn’t the comfiest place to sit. He leaned towards me and I placed my hand on his chest.

  “You’re gonna get me wet.”

“Babe, I can guarantee that you are already wet.” He wiggled his eyebrows and I smacked him lightly on the shoulder. “Kiss me.” He demanded. I slipped off my zip up hoody so it wouldn’t get wet, as I only had a vest top on underneath. I lay my forearms on his shoulders and played with the ends of his hair. We kissed softly but passionately.

“I.” Kiss “Need.” Kiss “To.” Kiss “Go.” I pulled back from him and pushed at his chest. He moved, but not willingly.

“Call me when you’re done and I will come get you.”

“We’ll see what happens with Amelia first.” I told him. “See you later, baby.” I walked over to his bedroom door, turned around and blew him a kiss. He pretended to catch it and place it on his heart. Was that his way of telling me he loved me? I wanted to say the words to him so much, but they wouldn’t leave my mouth. I was still afraid that he would think it was too soon to tell him that I was in love with him and I was worried that he wouldn’t say it back to me. I didn’t want to feel stupid and I definitely didn’t want it to change things between us.

  ***

“What’s going on with you and Matt?” I asked Bonnie as I brought back our second coffees to the table outside.

“What do you mean?” She asked, studying her fingernails and pretending she was bored of talking about him.

  “You slept with him again…”

“Wait, what? How did you know?” Bonnie actually blushed, I was shocked as she never got embarrassed.

“I went to knock on Matt’s door to let you know I was leaving and I heard… Some noises.”

“Oh dear God… It was just more fun, that’s all.” She shrugged her shoulders.

“And does Matt know that?” She nodded as she took a sip of her coffee. “Why won’t you let him get close?”

“Who says I want him to?” She said, defensively.

“You were clearly upset when you found out about him and Amelia.”

“I was shocked, that’s all… I don’t want a relationship, with anyone.” That was the end of that conversation.

“I’m going to confront Amelia about the drugs.”

  “Really?”

“Yeah, as much as she is a pain in my life, I don’t want her hooked on drugs and ruining her future.” I looked at my watch and saw that it was nearly four in the afternoon. “I should actually get going.” I took a couple large gulps of my coffee, burning my mouth slightly.

“Let me know how it goes.” Bonnie said as she stood up to give me a hug.

“I will, call you later. Love you.”

  “Love you too.”

After a power walk home, I walked straight upstairs as Mum and Dad were out, and straight to Amelia’s room. I didn’t bother knocking.

“Hey.” She called out. “Oh, it’s you. What do you want?” She was lying on her bed. I sat on the chair next to her bed.

“Why did you tell me you slept with Jacob?” I asked, crossing my arms in front of my chest.

  “Because I did.”

“He wasn’t the guy in your bed.”

“He was.” She said, sitting up. “Besides if you asked him, of course he would deny it.”

“He was outside when I walked, no, ran down the stairs.”

“You’re lying, he was in my bed.” She looked genuinely upset. Had she taken drugs that night and thought she had bought Jacob home?

“Are you taking drugs?” I decided not to beat around the bush and just ask her.

“No.” Was all she said. She looked away and wouldn’t make eye contact with me.

“Don’t lie to me, Amelia.” I stood up in front of her.

  “What’s it to you anyway?”

“What would Mum and Dad say if they found out?” Amelia stood up too and got close to my face.

  “They wouldn’t believe you.”

“Oh, I beg to differ.” I got out my phone and showed her the video I had of her buying drugs. When I looked up her face was red and she looked angry.

“What do you want?” She asked.

“I want you to leave me and Jacob alone, stop being and acting like the perfect daughter when we both know you aren’t one.”

“I can’t do that, I’m the favourite.” She smirked at me.

“Not if I show them this… Think about it.” I said over my shoulder as I walked out of her room. When I closed my bedroom door I heard her scream and throw some things in her room around. Maybe recording this video was the best thing that I could have done. Maybe she would finally buck up her ideas and get her life back on track. I didn’t want her hooked on drugs, she was my sister, I loved her even though she was making my life difficult. All I wanted out of having this video was for Amelia to leave me and Jacob alone.

  Chapter 19

I was pacing up and down Jacob’s front room; he was at a fight, it was only the second one since I found out about them and the last one was over a month ago. I just couldn’t seem to relax; something didn’t feel right. I had my phone held tight in my hand waiting for a call to say that he was ok.

  Knock knock.

I answered the door and was surprised to see Bonnie standing there.

“Hey, you ok?” She asked. I shook my head and carried on pacing. It had been nearly three hours and I still hadn’t heard anything. Normally I would have had a call by now.

  “Something’s wrong.” I said quietly.

“Rose, you need to sit down and relax. This isn’t good for you, getting worked up like this… He has been doing this for over four years now and has never been hurt.”

“Why is it taking so long for someone to call me?”

Ping. I heard a message tone and looked at my phone, it wasn’t mine.

“It must be yours.” I said to Bonnie. She pulled her phone out read the message she got. She looked confused. “Who is it?”

  “I don’t know… Now, don’t freak out…”

  “What? What is it?”

“It’s from an unknown number… It says, one of your guys has been hurt, they are at the hospital.”

“Oh my God, I knew it… I knew something was wrong.” I was in a daze as Bonnie had hold of my arm and was dragging me out of the door and into the lift.

“Call Jacob, I will try Matt… What if it’s someone playing a prank?” Bonnie said holding the phone to her ear. “It’s just constantly ringing.”

“Jacob’s too.” Once the lift had reached the ground floor we both ran to Bonnie’s car and she got us to the hospital as quickly as possible. Once we had parked we stormed through the doors to accident and emergency.

“Matt.” Was all I heard Bonnie say as she took off running towards him. She flung herself into his arms and luckily he caught her. I was looking around wildly for Jacob, I couldn’t see him. I walked slowly towards Matt and Bonnie, fear was starting to creep in. What was he going to tell me? I wouldn’t be able to handle it if he was in a bad way.

“Oh my God, you’re alright, you’re alright.” Bonnie kept repeating before she kissed him.

“Where’s Jacob?” I asked, once he had put Bonnie back down on her feet.

“He got knocked out, normally smell
ing salts would bring him around but it didn’t…”

“Oh my God.” I whispered as I felt my legs buckle. Matt reached out and grabbed a hold of me; he pulled me into his chest and stroked my back soothingly.

“We are waiting to hear how he is; they wouldn’t let me back there. Let’s see if they will let you.” I nodded and Matt led me over to the desk. “Hi, this is Jacob Peters fiancée.” My head snapped around to look at Matt. “He has no other family.”

“Ok, she can come with me.” The nurse said and I hugged Matt quickly to say thank you. I followed the grey haired nurse down the corridor. She stopped outside the door and she pointed to it. “He’s in there honey.” She started to walk away.

“Is he ok?” I didn’t know what I was going to be walking in to, was he conscious? Would he look different? Bruised? Injured? When I’d seen this sort of stuff on TV the nurse or doctor normally pre-warn people before they go in, so they know what to expect. I was shaking as I was scared as to what I would find on the other side of the door.

“He is fine, the doctor is with him.” I nodded and opened the door quietly; I didn’t want to interrupt anything. Once the door was open enough for me to peer through I could see the doctor was talking to Jacob and I didn’t want to disturb them. I walked slowly towards the bed; once I was within touching distance, I gently slid my hand into Jacob’s. He turned his head smiled at me and continued listening to the doctor. Once the doctor was finished and left the room, I let him have it.

“What the hell happened?” I glared at him.

“This guy got one hell of a punch! Knocked me right out.” He didn’t sound happy. He made me angry, I couldn’t believe he was more worried about his reputation than his health. He sounded like his pride was hurt not his body.

“It must have been bad for you to be brought here, what did the doctor say?” Jacob tried to readjust his position to face me on the bed and his face told me how much pain he was in. “What are you doing? Don’t move.”

“Come here, I want my girl close to me.” I sat on the edge of his bed and waited for him to tell me what the doctor had said. “All he said was that I had a couple of bruised ribs, my head is fine there is no swelling, and I can go home soon.”
