“Why?”
“It was so stupid. I wasn’t thinking.”
“You were thinking enough to call my number,” he said. “What did you wish to say to me?”
“I don’t know.”
“But—something?”
“I guess so.”
“May I hope that you were calling because you wanted to see me?”
“I’m divorced now,” I blurted out.
“Are you saying you are free?” He sounded cautious but hopeful.
“I’m saying I’m divorced. That’s all I’m saying.”
“Are you saying that if I were to fly to Portland, you would see me?”
