Trish trudged through the sand and over rocks quickly. Her stomach growled in anticipation. Frustratingly though, as she trekked on, the landscape didn't show much sign of variation except a creeping fog that seemed to flow about awkwardly touching at her feet. Coming over a small hill, Trish finally caught up with Tim and Dave. "Hey guys, wait up."
Dave had a grotesque look on his face, "Of all the places we could wash up, we had to land on an island with
nothing but rocks and sand!"
Tim was trying to calm Dave down, "Listen, we haven't checked the entire island yet. Lets just keep looking. There could be some trees on the other side." Tim rolled over a small boulder. He searched in it's depression to see if any insects were hiding under the rock. Having not eaten in several days, Tim would have happily dined on almost any form of nourishment. Yet to his dismay, only a dark pool presented itself. Tim's interest is suddenly peaked by this unusual matter. He tries to insert a finger into it for observation, but to his astonishment, it vanishes into the sand before he can make contact. Tim pushed the boulder back into place, "Come on let's go look a little further." Dave looked disappointed. "Don't worry, I'm sure we'll find something", Trish said patting Dave on the back.
In the boat, Fred stirs as if having a bad dream. His head tosses from side to side as a low grumble vibrates his larynx. As he sways quickly to one side, Fred bumps his nose against the frame of his confinement. The disruption rudely awakens him. Fred sits up rubbing his sore nose. A bit of liquid gets on his fingers. He observes the secretion, noting that the color and texture are similar to clotting blood. Then Fred's appendage rises shakily, due to his sickly state, returning the moistened digit to his nostril were the dark matter reenters. Fred uses a wooden railing to pull himself to his feet. His steps are like those of a two year old,
swaying to one side then bracing himself against a fixed object. Fred continues this, slowly making his way off the boat. Improvements are small but building. As he crosses the coast to the inland, his strides become more stable. Although his stance still appears hunched and crooked, Fred's pace soon elevates to a slow jog. His eyes stare blankly, focused only upon a distant target. Hurriedly stumbling over boulders, Fred seems oblivious to cuts and bruises produced about his shins.
Trish looks around hopelessly, "I can't believe it. There must be something to eat here. Oh! Fred, you scared me... Are you feeling better?"
....................
"Do you need some water?"
Fred reaches over, grabbing Dave's shirt, pulling Dave toward himself. "Hey man, let go of me!" Fred sticks his hand in Dave's pocket, retrieving his knife. Fred opens a blade, crazily viewing the shine. "Man, he's gonna go nuts again.", Dave approaching Fred aggressively. Suddenly, Fred's demeanor changed as he swiftly whips the blade, burying it in Dave's jugular. Dave stands frozen in terror. His mouth gaping as he attempts to remove Fred's hand from the weapon. Fred pulls back with a jerk, releasing a cascade of red liquid. Dave grips the wound as Trish runs to help. "Fred, what's wrong with you?", Tim yells. "I'll make a bandage from my shirt", Trish says trying to calm Dave. "Fred turns the blade and his attention to Tim. Tim
retreats, holding his hands up, "Hey man, just relax O.K.." Fred begins to leave the group. He walks to a large clearing. Using the knife, Fred carves a series of intricate symbols in the sand. He lowers to his knees. "AUH PTGHA TELA. AUH PTGHA TELA. VUHHHDR YOGHU BMLEA-TELA. HZULOU. FVAAAAAH!" Fred then raises the blade resting it firmly against his jugular. "HZULOU FVAAAAAH!" And he pulled the blade across producing a slit that hung open wide like a hungry mouth anticipating a heaping spoon of desert. Black liquid poured out of Fred's neck filling the crevices of the unusual drawings in the sand. Trish and Tim watched in wonder as to what should be done. Suddenly, a violent wind began blowing so hard Trish had to hold Tim's hand so as not to fall over. Dave's body melted to the ground as Trish relinquished her support. Near Fred, the ground looked to be falling out from beneath his lifeless body. A dark hole was forming in the sand, it's radius increasing very rapidly. In seconds, Fred's body had vanished into the terrain. As the cavity grew, there appeared to be a large mass rising out of it.
"What the Hell?", Trish mesmerized.
"Never mind that, we have to get to the boat! It's going to blow away!", Tim yelled over the wind.
"O.K.!", Trish agreed.
Tim ran as fast as he could pulling Trish behind. When they reached the boat it had already begun
dislodging itself from the bank. As they jumped in, the rope attached to the island snapped releasing them to the wind. Trish looked back. From the middle of the nightmarish isle a thick white stream rose to the sky like milk poured out in zero gravity.
Chapter 23
Newark, New Jersey
Danny lay still on his bed. A groan emerged every now and again, but nothing more. Father Hibbert stood by surveying the damage. He spoke on the phone. "Ellum, Father Hibbert here...... Oh, I know....... Uh huh...... You remember in eighty-three..... Yes..... Yah..... It's back............ I'm sure of it."
"Cough.... cough....."
"Danny! Hey Ellum, let me call you back O.K........ O.K. bye", click. "Danny, can you hear me?"
"Uncle Ed?... Ah.... It hurts."
"I know Danny. I'm sorry. There was no other way."
"What happened?"
"You were possessed after reading that book."
"It was like a bad dream. There were thoughts and voices in my head. So many I couldn't concentrate. I
remember things I did, bad things. I tried to fight it!"
"Danny, it's not your fault. You couldn't control yourself." Father Hibbert grabbing a cup of water from the desk, "Here, have a drink. Try to relax. Your mom's down stairs. She's been waiting to see you. I'll be just a minute." Father Hibbert exited the room. Heavy foot steps could be heard as he descended the stairs. The remainder of the day was spent with Carry lovingly at her son's bedside as Father Hibbert straitened up the effects of the possession.
The next day Father Hibbert spoke seriously with Carry and Danny. "I know this is a difficult time, but there is still more to be done. Danny, can you still understand the writing in the book?"
"Yeah... I think so."
"I'm going to need you to translate some of it for me."
"Ed, no!", Carry shouted angrily.
"Carry, he won't be possessed again. I made sure of that."
"You don't know for sure."
"You have to understand. I believe this is just the beginning. I've been having visions, and the things Danny said when he was possessed...."
"It's to dangerous!"
"There is more going on here than just a simple possession."
"Just a simple possession! What!..."
"Carry! That's not how I meant it. You just have to
realize there is a lot more at stake here than a single life!"
The room fell into a deep silence. Carry sat on the couch. She breathed heavily as she supported her head in her hands. Father Hibbert leaned back in heavy thought. Danny was first to break the tension.
"I'll do it."
"Danny", Carry pleaded.
"It's alright mom. I'm scared too, but I trust Uncle Ed."
A tear rolled down Carry's cheek. She leaned over hugging her son, "I love you Danny."
Chapter 24:
Sarasota, Florida
"Hey Sam, you hear bout them sick people in South Merca?"
"No. What happened?"
"Germs spreadin' round like crazy. Come look, I think they talkin' bout it right now."
"Good afternoon, I'm Megan Wilson." "And I'm Chuck Whip." "Tonight's top story, an outbreak of an unknown illness in Brazil. It is said that over one hundred people have been infected with the bacteria in the last twenty
-four hours. Here now is news correspondent Consuela Martinez on sight at St. Vincent Hospital in Rio de Janeiro."
"Doctors are baffled here at St. Vincent by the mysterious bacteria. They say it behaves much like
the flu. It can be transmitted by coughing or touching contaminated surfaces, but the internal structure varies greatly from anything they have ever dealt with before. Joining me is Dr. Guttires. Dr., is there anything you can tell us about this sudden outbreak?"
"Yes, here at St. Vincent Hospital we are taking every precaution. We are very optimistic as the facility is one of the most advanced in the country."
"Back to you Megan."
"Wow Chuck, that's interesting."
"Yeah it sure is, and later at ten, the five most common infectious bacteria and what you can do to keep yourself safe. Now here's Tom with the weather......."
Chapter 25:
Newark, New Jersey
In a vision, I saw two phrases. One said It will rise from the depths, and the other was simply a name, I think, White Genocide. Do you know of any significance that those phrases might have? Maybe you saw the name in the book."
"Yes, I have heard the name, but it's not the name of a being. It's an event. Like a celebration to mark the second reign of the Eldritch Gods, prepping the land for their raising from an ancient city."
"What do you mean Eldritch Gods?"
"Hellacious creatures that ruled the land even before man. I read something about them crossing over from another dimension in the time when the galaxies were still forming. They were cast away long ago unto the depths."
"And do you know when this event is supposed to happen?"
"It's.... already begun."
Chapter 26:
Jackson, Alabama
"Bobby! Move your ass, I'm try'n tuh see this."
"We take you now live to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil where Consuela Martinez is standing by. Consuela, are there any new developments that you can tell us about?"
"Yes, the number infected by this unusual bacteria has increased dramatically. More people are arriving every hour. The hospital is overwhelmed as it is. They have resorted to setting up tents to shelter the sick. I'm being told a state of emergency is in effect. All uninfected are to evacuate the city. Oh, an officer is instructing us to get in our vehicle. I think.... oh.... my God! What.. What is that?" "Ruuun!!!!" Pop! Pop!
"A sick man just came out of a tent. It's like his stomach exploded and a mass of large white spidery looking creatures spilled out! They're eating the workers!"
Chapter 27:
Newark, New Jersey
"Can you find anything about how to stop it? Anything at all?"
"Uhm.... I'm not sure exactly. There's all kinds of unusual devices in here. From what I've seen, most are either for communicating with beings from another dimension, I assume the one these creatures came from, or bringing more of them here. I'll keep reading, see what I can find.", Danny spoke while scanning through pages.
"O.K., I need to make a call. I'll be back in a minute." Father Hibbert said while stepping out on the porch.
"Danny are you feeling alright?", Carry, still in a state of terror from the whole situation.
"Fine mom."
"Do you need anything?"
"No."
After a few minutes the hinges of the front door squeaked lightly as Father Hibbert returned. "Having any luck?"
"I think so", Danny studying a page intensely.
"What did you find?"
"From what I can tell it's some kind of a bomb, but it doesn't blow anything up. It's like when it goes off, anything in it's blast zone will be transported to another dimension."
"Does it tell how to build it?"
"Yeah, I think so."
"Let me call Ellum one more time. See what he says." Father Hibbert began dialing.
"Hey Ellum listen, I think we may have something. Danny's been reading and he says he thinks there's some kind of a bomb that will get rid of the creatures......... O.K....... O.K........ O.K. bye." beep
"Ellum says there's some kind of outbreak in South America. Thousands of people sick and something about spiders coming out of their bodies. I'm not exactly clear on that, but they believe it's all connected somehow with this book and that possession back in eighty-three. He's been in contact with the military, and they say if we can tell them how to build a weapon to fight these things they'll build it. So we'll need to get over to the university were they'll try to construct this bomb A.S.A.P."
"Not Danny."
"He has to go, he's the only one who can read the book. I need him there."
Carry clung to her son, "Please Ed, just be careful."
"Carry, don't worry, we'll be fine. I won't let anything happen to him. Uhm Danny, you'll need to pack some clothes and anything else you think you'll need. I'm going to call the airport, see when the next flight is."
Chapter 28:
USS Franklin D. Roosevelt
"Alright men, we will be making landfall in approximately twenty-four hours. Remember, all civilians are to be treated as possible contaminants. At this moment we have had no communication with Rio de Janeiro in ten hours. During our last communication it was expressed that the entire city had erupted in complete chaos as massive swarms of some type of alien insects have overrun everything. These things are said to attack swiftly and without warning. Be on alert at all times. No one, and I mean no one is to stray from their group. This will be like no other enemy we have ever faced before. I want all equipment checked and ready by 0-seven hundred hours. Is that understood?"
"Yes sir!"
"Then you are dismissed."
"Capt. Taft, do you have a copy? Over."
"Yes, this is Capt. Taft. Over."
"Uh, General Hurst is on the phone sir. Over."
"O.K., Tell 'em I'll be right up. Over."
"Copy that sir."
Chapter 29:
University of Birmingham, England
"Hi Danny, I'm professor Ellum Curlis, pleased to meet you. Your uncle has told me a lot about you."
"Thanks."
"Well, over here is our team of engineers. They can build just about anything you can imagine."
Father Hibbert rests a hand on Danny's shoulder as he leans over, "Alright Danny, all you have to do is explain to these men what it says in the book about constructing the bomb. Just remember to take your time and be as detailed as possible, because it's very important that we get it just right."
"Yes Uncle Ed, I know."
Chapter 30:
Marchwood Naval Base, UK
"Yes Commander....... I've been in contact with a Professor Curlis........... So you know of his work?.......... Yes, he believes he has obtained a possible solution to the dilemma.......... I don't have that information at this time.............. I believe if he says he has a weapon then
it's worth trying............ Yes definitely.............. O.K., we'll get someone over there A.S.A.P...........
Chapter 31:
University of Birmingham, England
"Uh yeah, and ten feet of copper wiring needs to be threaded through these holes on the side here."
"Ten feet of copper wiring? Why?"
"That's what it says."
"Professor, this doesn't make any sense. What good would copper wiring possibly do........"
"Listen Emir, none of this makes any sense. But there's one thing I know, and that is, whatever is going on out there has direct linkage to this book. And this book says if we use copper wiring, we may have a snowball's chance in Hell to get rid of those creatures, then so help me God, use the damn copper wiring!"
"O.K....... Sorry."
Chapter 32:
USS Franklin D. Roosevelt
"General Hurst, this is Capt. Taft......... Yes sir.......... Understood sir..........." Click "Hansen."
"Yes sir."
"Change of plans. Seems a large object has been spotted east of here on a weather radar. They say it's the size of a small island and headed this way, fast."
"What is it?"
"Don't know, but we have to be ready for it when it gets here."
Chapter 33:
University of Birmingham, England
"Professor Curlis."
"Yes, how is it coming along?"
"From what the schematics show, we believe it is complete."
"Really?", Professor Curlis approached the obviously alien device, studying it in amazement, a myriad of complex inner workings gyrated and shifted with a sort
of orchestrated rhythm. "Well, it sure is something. Do you know how to activate it?"
"I believe you drop it like you would an ordinary bomb near the creature you wish to be rid of."
"Hm...... Very good. Well then, I'll give Commodore Davison a call, let 'em know we're ready. I believe he wants to meet at a dock for loading onto a ship."
"How do we get it there?"
"We're working on getting a flatbed over here. Don't see a whole lot of other options with such a monstrosity."
Chapter 34:
USS Franklin D. Roosevelt
"Holy shit! What the hell is that thing?", Officer Hansen said as a gargantuan mass came into view in the distance. While it only rose a foot out of the water, the length had to be at least a few hundred yards. Swaying to and fro, in a way similar to a crocodile, the creature cut through waves faster than a Cruiser at full speed.
"I wish I knew.", Capt. Taft replied while looking through a pair of binoculars.
"What do we do now sir?"
"Be on alert, but don't engage until I say otherwise."
The anxious crew watched silently as the aquatic creature raced on, but suddenly it changed it's trajectory. Turning smooth as a new Porsche, it's new projected path would cut the vessel clean in two.
