Cats in the City Page 7

by Tom Watson

“Will you stay here while I go make sure?” Edith asked.

Stick Cat nodded. He climbed through the hole—and then waited for Edith to return. He was certain it was Tiffany. And he knew Edith would come and close the cabinet door. That was something they both always remembered to do. Then Tiffany spoke—and it made him stop and turn his head.

“Look what was outside our door,” Tiffany said. Stick Cat could hear her talk to Edith in the living room. “A big bag from Hazel’s Bagels. I have no idea what it’s doing here. There are bagels and cream cheese. Even lox!”

Stick Cat heard Edith purr loudly then.

“Oh, I see,” said Tiffany. “You want to be petted now that I have lox, hunh?”

Stick Cat smiled at that comment.

“I’ll put some lox on this napkin just as a special treat for a special kitty.”

Stick Cat heard Edith purr loudly again.

“I’m going to go make some tea,” Tiffany said. Stick Cat heard Tiffany’s footsteps move across the living-room carpet and reach the kitchen, where there was a tile floor.

Everything was fine now. He climbed out of his bathroom cabinet and began to shut the door.

But he stopped before it was shut.

  “Pssst!”

  It was Edith.

He opened the door fully and saw Edith through the hole. Something hung from her mouth. It was pinkish.

  “What’s that?” he whispered.

“It’s lox!” Edith mumbled without dropping it. “Here.”

As he reached in and took the lox, Stick Cat said, “Thanks for sharing.”

Edith winked and said, “You’re welcome.”

And then she retreated out her bathroom cabinet.

Stick Cat smiled and exited his side.

He put the lox down on the bathroom floor. He sniffed them. He licked them.

  He smiled.

He was right about Hazel—she did reward them with lox.

And Edith was right about lox.

  Lox were delicious.

  ABOUT THE AUTHOR

TOM WATSON is the author of the Stick Dog series. There are currently six books in that series—and more to come.

He lives in Chicago with his wife, daughter, and son. He also has a dog, as you could probably guess. The dog is a Labrador-Newfoundland mix. Tom says he looks like a Labrador with a bad perm. He wanted to name the dog “Put Your Shirt On” (please don’t ask why), but he was outvoted by his family. The dog’s name is Shadow. Shadow gives Tom lots of ideas for the Stick Dog series.

Tom Watson is also the author of the new Stick Cat series.

Tom does not have a cat. So his ideas for the Stick Cat series come from a whole different place. He’s not sure where that place is exactly, but he knows it’s kind of strange there.
