  “Dhampir?”

“Part human, part vampire,” Drake clarified.

“There’s a name for that? Is it common?” I asked.

“No,” Cryder said. “In fact, it’s very uncommon. The

last one in recorded history was over a hundred years ago. And

because of your nature, the rituals you must undergo will be

very trying—very painful—for you. But they are necessary. By

the time it’s over, you’ll have been fully transformed into the

vampire queen you were meant to be. Your strength and

power will increase exponentially, and you will be fully

prepared to rule over the people of our bloodline.”

I bit my lip. Very painful. It sounded terrifying. But the

promise of attaining my full strength—a strength, I now

realized, I was born to possess—fueled my resolve to go

through with it. And then there was the allure of ruling at

Cryder’s side, of being together with him in the days to come.

When I thought about it that way, I knew I could survive

whatever trials lay ahead. I could do whatever it took to fulfill my destiny and take my place as Cryder’s queen.

“We’ll journey to Italy,” Cryder said. “There, we will

find the rest of my family and our blood clan.”

“Right. No problem.” I took a deep breath. “So, I just

have to survive the rest of high school, graduate, go to Italy,

and learn to be queen of the vampires. I can do that.”

“I’ll be with you all the way,” Cecile said, taking my

  hand.

“We all will,” Drake said. “The protection you’ll require

against rogue vampires is best handled by groups. As long as

we all stick together, we’ll be safe.”

“What about your mom?” I asked Cecile.

She gave me a tight smile. “I’ll just tell her we’re

traveling with friends. She knew it was a possibility. I’d talked about it before. And then we’ll figure out the rest as we go

  along.”

I looked from one of them to the next. My friends. My

new family. And Cryder, my fiancé. The king to my queen. I

couldn’t believe this was my life. And yet, there was a part of

me—a part of me that felt stronger and more powerful with

each passing moment—that couldn’t wait to get started.

I smiled and felt the tug of my blood. “Let’s do this.”
