  Chapter 1

For the first time today, Scarlet sat down and relaxed for a moment. She was still very young but there wasn’t a day that passed that she hadn’t thought that she was becoming too old to be a party planner.

“Scarlet!” her friend and business partner Ethan shouted over the music, “I’ve been looking for you everywhere.”

She looked up at him and flashed him a warning look. He came to sit beside her as she observed the dancing crowd of people on the dancefloor.

“This may be the best party you’ve ever thrown,” he said flashing her a wide grin with his usual sneaky glint in his eyes. “we’re sure to pick up some new customers here tonight.”

“Yes, and it might just be the death of me.” She replied, “I’m far too old for this.”

“The best way to die.” He replied

Scarlet laughed and nudged him when he wrapped his hand around her shoulder.

“You should cheer up,” Ethan said, “if you wanna get out of here I’d be happy to finish off for you.”

“Would you?” she asked suddenly happy for a way out of this party.

“Sure,” he replied, “the night is practically done, and everything is in order.”

“Thank you so much,” she said jumping to her feet and leaning down to plant a kiss on Ethan’s cheek, “if you didn’t have Derek I could swear you were trying to sweet me up to get into my pants.”

Ethan laughed a deep throaty laugh that always cheered her up. He had been her friend since she moved into the city for university. Being the small-town girl that she was, she had been totally at sea when she first arrived. Ethan had graciously taken her under his wings. At first, she had thought he was into her and she hadn’t minded because Ethan was a dashingly handsome man. Later, she had found out that he preferred the other team, and while most people didn’t know, it wasn’t something he tried to conceal, he carried without shame. He was simply not the stereotype she had gotten used to while growing up.

“I have other plans for you.” He said flashing her a sneaky smile.

Scarlet didn’t wait for him to say anything else, she laughed and walked towards the door. She had checked her coat and bag and so she approached the desk where they had stored her things. As she walked over, she noticed a man she hadn’t seen at the party. He was standing with a woman clinging to his arm and his back was turned to hers but there was something about him that drew her to him. It was as if she knew him somehow; maybe from her time studying in the city. How strange, she thought as she approached the desk, but then he turned, and she stopped as if she had been frozen in that spot.

“Lucas?” she whispered feeling a lump the size of her heart lodging in her throat.

He looked at her and suddenly the same rush of feelings that settled in the pit of her stomach flashed across his face and then it was suddenly gone as quickly as it came. He looked at her as if she was a brand-new person as if she meant nothing to him. It was then that she remembered the woman who had been clinging to his arm. She eyed the woman who was looking at her with an intrigued expression. They stood there for what felt like an eternity before she heard someone call her name from behind.

  “Scarlet,”

She turned to see Ethan standing behind her holding her purse. He looked form her to Lucas and then back before raising a questioning brow.

“You rushed out so quickly you forgot your phone.” He said handing it to her. “see you tomorrow”

He leaned down and placed a gentle kiss on her cheek before walking away. When she turned to Lucas he was watching her still, but his expression had changed. He now looked at her as if he wanted to be as far away from her as possible.

“Ah, Scarlet” he said as if he hadn’t remembered her name, “it’s nice to see you again, I wish we could talk but I have to go.”

He said nothing else, he only turned and walked away with the woman beside him eyeing her with suspicion. Scarlet stood there for another five minutes barely recognizing the room around her. Everything had blurred, and she was nineteen all over again. She had left all the pain in her past but
seeing Lucas here today was like witnessing a great tragedy.

“Miss,” the receptionist said dragging her out of her stupor, “are you alright?”

Although she felt like vomiting and crying all at once, she let the feelings pass and decided to keep moving. She had been doing this all her life, she had been moving and she wouldn’t let his chance meeting with Lucas stop her. She moved toward the desk and collected her things. As she walked out of the building, she let the cool air wash over her and soothe her.

She was happy for the chance to get home early on a Friday night. There was one side of her life that she had kept hidden from everyone in her professional life except Ethan. It was the one thing that had kept her going, and the one thing that held her up now as she tried to hail a cab. She was going home to see her son.

  Chapter 2

Lucas felt as if he was losing his mind. Earlier today, he had thought coming here would be a mistake and now he was confident it was a mistake. He was looking into buying the party planning company that hosted these gatherings and his friend Melvin had convinced him to attend the event they were hosting tonight. He had decided to check it out before approaching them with a deal. Angela who clung to him was a burden he wished he didn’t have to bear at the moment. His head was spinning back to the past and he began to feel all the pain he had been trying to drown out of his life all these years.

“It’s a great party,” Angela said glancing around the room nonchalantly.

He could feel her pressing her body up against him and while that would have worked at any other time, it suddenly felt like an itchy blanket he wanted to throw off.

“It’s great.” He replied wondering what he could say or do to get rid of her, “why don’t you go get us some drinks?”

“I’ll be right back” she replied limbering off, she had always been happy to do anything for him. He walked to the back of the room where he saw an exit sign and pushed the door open, so he could get some fresh air. Scarlet, a voice whispered in his mind. She had stood there today looking like a lost angel. He hair was still that strange red-orange he had always loved. He had thought she might have changed it all those years because she would always complain about the distinctiveness. She had changed so much since the last time he had seen her. Her lips were fuller, her breasts were fuller, her skin was flawless and she had gotten much thinner so that her curves were only pronounced in certain places. She was a woman, a phantom of the little girl she had been.

He had thought about her so much within the first year of their parting that he thought surely, he would have died if he didn’t see her. After some time, the realization of her absence from his life set in and he began to think about her less. He had given up on their love so long ago it was strange to see her standing there today.

  “I got our drinks”

Lucas stepped back into the room and took the drink in Angela’s outstretched hand. He threw it back in one gulp, relishing the burn as it slid down his throat.

  “Are you alright?” she asked

“I’m fine” he replied a bit too harshly,

“It’s just that you’re not really yourself since you saw that woman earlier,” she replied

“What do you mean?” he asked

“You’re usually up for a good party.” she said, “this is a great one and here you are at the back of the room like a wallflower.”

“I’ll be fine,” he said. The last person he wanted to talk to about this was Angela.

“It’s that woman we saw isn’t it.” She insisted, “I could tell she shook you up. Do you know her?”

Lucas was about to say yes, he knew her but then he stopped. Did he really know her? It had been five years since he saw or even spoke to her. She was a stranger to him despite their past and there was a voice telling him that it would always be like this.

  “No” he replied, “not anymore.”

The look on Angela’s face told him that his answer wasn’t convincing.

  “She was pretty,” Angela said

He eyed her as she gave the compliment and he knew she didn’t mean it. That didn’t matter anyway, Scarlet was not pretty, she was transcendentally beautiful, and he had been the only fool in history for allowing her to walk out of his life. The pain of his past was threating to overcome him. Instead of laboring on the past, he tried to focus on the woman before him. Angela was the manager of one of the branches of his father’s marketing company and somehow, he had stumbled into an ill-advised relationship with her. She didn’t compare to Scarlet in any way.

“I guess you could say that.” He replied, “I think I should go. I like the party, but I’ve seen all I need to see.”

“Yes, there are much better things we could be doing now,” Angela said flashing him a seductive smile.

He tried not to sneer and reveal his displeasure. He would be taking her home and leaving her there.

  Chapter 3

“Can I come to one of your parties’ mommy?”

Scarlet looked down at her five-year-old son and smiled. He was so charming for such a little boy and she couldn’t help but adore him.

“I’m so sorry my love, no parties for little boys” she replied leaning down and kissing him on the cheek

It was their usual morning routine to eat together and she always loved this time of the day more than anything else.

“I’m five now,” he said lifting one of his hands to show her five tiny fingers, “I’m a big boy now.”

“Yes, yes,” she replied, “I apologize, no parties for big boys.”

She could hear the tiny sigh that left his body and she tried not to chuckle. He went back to spooning out some cereal and shoving it into his mouth. As she watched him she was suddenly filled with unimaginable sadness. Her son was the best thing that had ever happened to her. After figuring out she had been pregnant, she had kept it to herself for months before she started showing. It was Ethan who had taken her to her first doctor’s appointment and insisted she tell her family. They had been shocked and revolted by the news so much so that she had been disowned by both her parents. What made it worse was that she had to confess that Lucas was the father. They hated Lucas and his entire family, the fact that she bore his child made them even more upset.

As she watched him, she picked up her phone and called her younger sister. Cecile was her best friend and the only one in her family who still spoke to her.

“Why are you awake?” Cecile asked in a groggy voice that told Scarlet her sister was still asleep in her dorm room.

“I need to talk to you,” Scarlet replied ignoring her sister’s question

“What’s going on?” Cecile asked, “is everything alright? Is it Logan?”

  “No, it’s Lucas” she replied

The phone was silent, and Scarlet knew what was going through her sister’s mind.

  “What’s happened Scarlet?” Cecile asked

“I saw him at a party I organized last night” she replied, “we didn’t talk.”

“Did you tell him?” Cecile asked

“I saw him,” Scarlet said, “I didn’t lose my mind.”

  “Good” Cecile replied,

“I don’t think it should be a problem regardless, I don’t think it matters if I have a child or not, it’s not general knowledge and what are the odds that he will think it’s his?” she asked both herself and her sister.

“You did try to tell him remember” Cecile reminded her, “they sent the letter back informing you never to write back to their address.”

The memory of the nasty note written by Lucas’ mother replayed in her mind. It had stung so painfully she almost ripped it to shreds but she had kept it to remind herself never to lose her nerve.

“I’m just shaken up,” she replied, “I doubt I’ll be seeing him again.”

  “I hope not” Cecile replied,

“Can you pick him up from school later?” she asked, “I have a late meeting today. As co-owner, I have to listen to a pitch from a com
pany who wants to buy us out.”

“Sure,” Cecile replied, “I can take care of him.”

“Good” Scarlet replied, “we’ll talk later.”

Scarlet hung up and looked over at Logan, he lifted his head and smiled revealing his missing tooth.

“You need to hurry up mister, we have a long day ahead of us.” She said,

“Will you tuck me in tonight?” he asked with big blue hopeful eyes. They reminded her so much of Lucas’ that it pained her heart.

“I’ll try to be home in time to tuck you in,” she replied

He frowned, and she felt her heart sink.

“We can have a movie night tomorrow,” she said

“Oh yay,” he said, and all the light returned to his face.

He was a master at manipulating her to get his way but she was his happy and eager victim.

An hour later she dropped him off at school and made her way to work. It was a big day today den she was going in early to begin working on a few events they had coming up. She knew Ethan was nervous about the possible buyout and what it meant for their company, but she had told him long ago that they would do whatever it took to save their people. Partnering to own their own company was a big risk but it had paid off tremendously. She had her clients and he had his, but they worked together to do the work. In the end, it led to expansion and they had taken on more clients to become bigger than she ever imagined. They planned all sorts of events now and they were thinking of more expansions. The offer to buy their company had come as a surprise and she knew that if they weren’t careful, they would either get a great deal or mess up everything they had worked years developing.

When she got to the office, Ethan was already in and he was mulling over a few documents. She went into his office and sat down in front of his desk.

“How did the party end last night?” she asked

“It was spectacular” he replied, “great job as always.”
