In the interest of openness, or because I wanted to, or because I couldn’t help it, or all of the above - I lifted my face to him and kissed him long and slow and very publicly.
And of course, just to hear his breath catch - I bit Brecken’s tongue.
Chapter 71
I held Henna while she drifted into sleep. Maybe I helped her drift. But no messing with her mind. Henna was strong willed, fiery tempered, independent and smart. A precious and human individual who did feel enticingly like us. My Silver, I suppose. I pressed my lips to her forehead and eased her into deeper slumber.
Christina was away so I could have stayed the night. But there was something else going on that I absolutely had to test and not where Henna might awaken. I slipped from her bed and into the night and the waiting hills.
Uneasiness gripped me and I stalled a bit, amusing myself with skittish ground squirrels and wild hares. My gut turned over and my chest heaved. Okay. No more putting it off. I settled against the stump of a dead mesquite, looked at the heavens and opened myself fully to Henna. The humming throb was like sweet nectar to me now. Like the warmth of the sun spreading itself perfectly on my skin.
It came, as I suspected it would. A seeking tendril from her house just below. This time I gave out nothing. This time she sought me and I felt her probe, seeking my energy. I let her enter me and consume and fill herself with Silver. And she did it so well, with concentration somehow, and awareness.
Awareness?
The myriad of small signs that I’d noticed and ignored suddenly clicked into place. I flew to my feet and stared in shock at her house.
Was I wrong? I’m not wrong. How could I have blocked? How could I have been so blind? And how did I ever allow it to happen?
I closed my eyes and flung my head back and hissed as the horrible realization swelled and my world turned over. A resigned sigh filled my two selves and escaped into the beautiful dark.
“Ah, damn. She knows.”
About the Authors
To put it simply, Dixie Pieslak and Jamie Brownlee love to write. Although they have spent years entangled in scholastic pursuits, the urge to write fiction has always simmered. Both are intrigued by the twist and spin of male/female relationships. And they have a passion for the complexities of the mind and soul. Ergo, this novel and more to come.
Here's a quirk or two. Jamie loves to hike and dance salsa. Dixie does all her writing outdoors. And both of them have dogs.
Although widely traveled, the authors make their respective homes in Southern California. They are currently at work finalizing the next novel in the series.
Before There Was Silver To be published in February, 2013.
