Koby's Destiny Page 4

“Here he is, a little worse for wear, but alive. He’s a computer guy,” Logan said to the Doctor. He gave Koby an encouraging nudge to walk towards her.

“Mr. Kobayashi, I am Doctor Julie Horner.” She introduced herself with a stern look. “Let's get you to the medical center and I’ll bandage you up.”

“Just a moment please,” a cloaked man said, walking quickly toward them from between two houses. It was not until the man was a few feet away that Koby recognized him as a priest.

Major Logan said, “Pastor this is ...”

“Gary Kobayashi,” the Pastor replied, not letting the Major finish the introduction.

“Uh, people call me Koby,” he said, to remind them all.

“Very well, Koby. Welcome to Goshen. I am Pastor Pendell. You are safe here as you can see our Eagles are very well trained. And in return for that safety, I do have some computer related tasks you may be able to help with.” The pastor clearly had Koby’s attention. “You see that big beautiful dam? Well, it generates our electricity and our water pressure, and in a way, it is our salvation. Here on earth, that is.”

Koby nodded, although he wondered where the Pastor was going with his comments.

“You see, the electric company employees haven't been around in quite a while and, well, we need someone to oversee the operational side of things. If you are up to it that is,” Pastor Pendell said. He didn't let Koby mutter a sound before he continued on with the next set of orders. “Doctor, if you would be so kind as to treat him for his ailments and injuries and then take him to see Doris. I'll make sure she has a hot meal waiting for him upon his arrival.”

“Will do, Pastor,” Doctor Horner said. She motioned for Koby to follow her to the medical unit located down the street. She pointed in the general direction. “Please follow me this way.”

Koby glanced back to look at the dam, taking in the sheer enormity of the structure. “Pastor Pendell, right?”

“Yes, my son,” he said with a pleasant smile and a kind twinkle in his eye.

“You know I'm just a repair guy, right? I'm not the genius who started Microsoft or Google or anything like that. I just make dumb catchy commercials and help people fix their machines when they get viruses from watching too much porn.”

Pastor Pendell smiled, seemingly enjoying Koby’s humility. “Look around at what the good Lord has provided us. The open sky and the beautiful river, the protection of these mountains, and the welcoming arms of the residents here in Goshen. We offer an opportunity for you to live and thrive in a broken world. There is nothing here holding you back, Koby. Here in Goshen, with no fences or walls, one does not need gates or windows.”
