Deception of the Demon Girl Page 20

by Eddie R. Hicks

I gave him a nod. “Schubert indirectly did some work for the Yakuza in secret. Maybe he left some notes lying around, or untested experiments. Something that could help us.”

A cure to soul contamination, that’s what we need. That’ll shut the fae up.

“Once demonic possession ends so will the threat of war. And, believe me, you don’t want to see what will happen to the city if the fae brings their war with the Umbral to it.”

I returned to our office after leaving Gabe at the cemetery—he wanted some time alone with his departed wife. Speaking of the dead … Giovanni’s body was still stuffed in my closet. I made plans to freeze it with my talents so it wouldn’t rot. Disposing of that is going to be tough if the fae are watching me in secret, not a hard thing when you control the FBI.

If they see me with Giovanni’s body, I’m fucked, and so is the city. That will definitely get the fae fired up searching for my blood, Alice too. I couldn’t lose her and her family as an ally. I needed them to get through to the Lux, spread the word that I’m not that bad of a person, and that Emily is half fae and trusts me.

I wished Jim was still around, getting rid of Giovanni’s body would have been easy as a phone call or text message, plus he was a lot faster and discreet compared to the Yakuza clean-up crew. I needed to find Jim, wherever in LA he ended up.

I approached my desk and noticed someone was sitting on my chair, and it wasn’t Emily.

Someone else let themselves into our office, who, I couldn’t tell. They had the chair spun around with its back to me as they peered out the window.

“Hello, Reika,” the woman in my chair said.

She spun the chair around facing me. It was the Shinigami, the same one that brought me back from the dead.

I felt my heart do things it shouldn’t be doing in my chest.

“Oh, shit,” I said dejectedly. “You’ve come to collect?”

“Kinda,” the Shinigami said with a shrug. “Oh, and we need to have a chat about that dead fae in your closet.”

  My eyes narrowed. “Why’s that?”

“Because you done fucked up, Reika, more than you think.”

Next time on Contaminated Souls …

  Nemesis of the Demon Girl

The conflict with the fae reaches a boiling point. As everything starts to come full circle, Reika and Emily face their most lethal adversary yet, a gunslinging demon hunter. Only Lilith can help the two, assuming they could get her to side with them.
