He reached down, took her hand, and squeezed.

“If I’m going to be stuck in a cabin in the middle of the wilderness without power, there’s no one I’d rather be stuck with than you,” he said, knowing it was a clumsy attempt… and that it was the best he could do.

She gave him a sideways grin. “Likewise. And hey, at least we’re starting off knowing which of us is the better shot. Now, how are we going to do this?”

He turned from her, grinning anew at the thought of actually having a direction in front of them, and scanned the area for the gate out onto the street. When he found it, he pointed to it.

“The gate’s as good a place to start as any,” he noted. “I know the area. There’s a big box store near here, and it’ll have food and weapons. Step 1: Get as many supplies as we can carry. Step 2: Find where the military has stashed their vehicles and steal one. Step 3: Ride into the sunset.”

She squeezed his hand and nodded. “Sounds like a goddamn happily ever after to me. Let’s do it. Same plan as before? Walk out like we belong here?”

“Walk out like we fucking own the joint,” he agreed.

The first step was the hardest. But with Marie at his side, he was feeling a whole lot more confident than he had any right to feel. The second step was easier. And before he knew it, they were walking quickly toward the gate, his mind already moving ahead of him to that box store and the things he was hoping to find there.

The first thing he was going to do was find the beer and hope it was still cold enough to drink. After that, he’d worry about the necessities they’d need for the next several months. Because he might know how to hunt, now, and Marie might have proved that she could shoot a deer, but if they were going to be out there for months, he wanted to spend those months enjoying himself and the break from the world.

He wanted to spend the months feeling safe and prepared. Because it had been too damn long since he’d felt either of those things.
