  Lodestone

  Lodestone—also known as magnetite—is black iron oxide that is naturally magnetic. As a result, lodestone often has small pieces of magnetic materials sticking to it, making it appear a little bit fuzzy, as if in need of a good shave. Keep it in a plastic container to keep the small bits of iron sticking to the lodestone. It is a very heavy stone for its size.

  Malachite

  A beautiful deep green stone, malachite is opaque with swirls of lighter green or white throughout. In its tumbled form, the striations form interesting designs similar to those found in marble. Malachite has a little bit of sheen to it and polishes to a high gloss. It is the stone of protection for airline workers.

  Moldavite

  Moldavite is a substance with a science fiction–worthy origin story. It is believed it forms as the result of a meteor impact. This “outer space” crystal has a deep olive green color with a bumpy texture and a lustrous sheen.

  Moonstone

  Moonstone looks like the moon reflected. It is typically peach, white, or black with swirling colors inside, depending on the light. All the colors share the same basic energetic qualities. Milky white moonstone is the most common color. It gets its shimmer from a property of gemstones known as adularescence, which is also found in labradorite.

  Muscovite

  Muscovite is a form of mica, with interesting formations that look like flakes or slabs coming from the main stone. It has a pearlescent, multicolor luster. The same energetic qualities are common to all colors of muscovite crystals. Muscovite is very brittle, so use and store it carefully. Don’t use water or salt to cleanse this crystal.

  Obsidian

  Made from volcanic glass, obsidian is a lustrous stone that may be smooth or have rough, craggy edges. The most common color is black, but you can find it in other colors as well, noted below. Obsidian is also the stone that makes up Apache tears (see here).

  Obsidian

  This form of obsidian is black to greenish black and has white splotches on it that resemble snowflakes. It is an opaque stone, and it can either be rough or tumbled and polished to a slight sheen.

  Onyx

  Onyx comes in many colors, although you mostly find it in black, black with white bands, or white with black bands. All the colors have the same metaphysical properties. It is a smooth, dark, heavy stone that is a form of chalcedony.

  Opal

  Opals are cloudy, soft, luminous gemstones that offer brilliant flashes of color. Opals come in an array of colors, including white, black, and blue. This is a high-vibration stone. This gemstone is very soft and can damage easily, so use caution when wearing it, cleaning it, or using it with other stones. Don’t use water or salt to cleanse this crystal.

  This gemstone is clear and comes in greens ranging from light olive green to bright apple green. It may have small black or brown flecks within the crystal. It is often cut and polished into faceted gemstones for jewelry.

  Prehnite

  A slightly transparent green gemstone, prehnite is muddy green or olive green. It has small striations throughout, and the surface of the rough stone is bumpy. When polished, the stone is luminous and fairly transparent. It is a high-vibration stone, often referred to as the stone of prophecy.

  This quartz is partially transparent with a milky pink color. You may find it in points or polished stones, and it is often carved into interesting shapes for jewelry. Rose quartz is known as the stone of love and is often used for all types of issues associated with love.

  Quartz

  Rutilated (or rutile) quartz is clear to smoky or golden, with long brown, reddish, or black strands running through it. Rutilated means the stone contains fine needles of titanium dioxide. You can find rutilated quartz in any form that you’d normally find quartz, such as clusters, points, and polished stones.

  Quartz

  A member of the quartz family, smoky quartz has a beautiful brown to gray smoke color. It occurs naturally in the Earth, but it can also be simulated in a laboratory, so it’s important to check the origins of the specimen. It is a clear stone when polished, and mostly clear to slightly opaque when in its rough form.

  A pretty pink stone, rhodochrosite has bands of white or black throughout. It is a partially translucent stone. This is quite a soft stone, so use caution when working with other stones. Don’t use water or salt to cleanse this crystal. Color variations arise from impurities.
