“All right, young lady.” He patted his thigh. “Over my knee. Let’s get this over with.”

She hesitated and tried to step back, but he grasped her wrist and hauled her over his lap in one swift movement. “Jake?” Uncertainty sounded in her voice, and she peered around at him with worry sparkling in her pretty blue eyes.

He cupped her bottom and shifted her into a more comfortable position on his lap, her center directly atop his swollen cock. A tremor ran through her, and he knew she’d felt his arousal, felt the evidence of his need for her. He caressed her backside, moving from cheek to cheek, and soon she relaxed over his lap. “Are you all right, Amy?”

“Yes.” Her voice was muffled by the covers, and she squirmed, as if trying to get him to fondle her ass harder.

  Chapter 1

Amy cast a sidelong glance at Jake. At the wheel of his ginormous Ford pickup truck in the middle of a Montana snowstorm, he navigated the road with confidence and managed to keep moving through the nasty weather. If anyone else had been driving, she’d be scared out of her mind, but she felt perfectly safe even though heavy snow and darkness blocked out the road ahead.

Jake’s iPhone buzzed and beeped on the seat between them, drawing her attention away from the road. She picked up his phone and frowned at the text message.

“What is it?” Worry tinged Jake’s deep voice. He sighed and reached for her, sparing a moment to squeeze her thigh before once again gripping the wheel with both hands. “It’s the airline with a text update, isn’t it?”

“Yeah,” she said softly, fighting back the sudden urge to cry. “Our flight has been cancelled.”

“I’m sorry, sweetheart.” He turned the radio on and tuned into a local station. The announcer listed off businesses and roads that were closed and advised everyone to stay indoors due to the wind chill. Just before Jake shut the radio off, the announcer also mentioned the airport would be closed until at least noon the next day, a rare occurrence since BIL strived to remain open year round. “The storm is growing stronger by the minute, Amy. I don’t think it’s safe to attempt a drive back home. We’re better off staying in the city until the roads are passable again. We’ll find a hotel.”

“We’re supposed to get married in Miami Beach in two days. I don’t want a hotel in Billings, Montana. I want a flight to Florida.” She crossed her arms and grumbled. She envied how calm and collected Jake seemed in the face of their postponed nuptials. Anger simmered beneath her skin. All the plans had been made months in advance. Most of their guests were already in Miami, waiting on a bride and groom who’d never make it.

“How about instead of a hotel, we go to Walter’s Bed and Breakfast over on Silver Street? It’ll be a little nicer than a hotel, and I bet he’ll have plenty of vacant rooms in the cold of December. Come on, sweetheart, everything will work itself out.” He reached over and squeezed her leg again, a smile easing across his handsome face as he kept his eyes on the road.

She felt like the universe was playing with them. They’d originally been scheduled to arrive in Florida a week ago, but they’d had to postpone their first flight after Amy’s Labrador got sick. She hadn’t had the heart to leave her beloved dog when she was recuperating, so they’d waited a week until Amy felt comfortable leaving her pet with a trusted neighbor. Maybe there was still a chance they could make it to Florida in two days. There was always tomorrow. She sighed and closed her eyes, hoping for a miracle.

  “You okay, sweetheart?”

She gave his hand a squeeze before directing it back to the wheel. “Yes, I’m okay. Sorry I’m being grumpy. It’s just that everyone is there waiting on us. My girls are there, and Phil is there too,” she said, referring to her daughters and Jake’s son. They both had children from previous marriages, all of them college age now. After years of being alone and depending on no one but herself, Amy hadn’t planned to fall in love and get married. She’d kept her distance and ignored her attraction to Jake for months after meeting him, but Jake Matthews was nothing if not persistent. On the ninth time he’d asked her on a date, she’d finally said yes.

“I’m sure the kids will find plenty to do to occupy themselves, as well as the rest of the guests, until we show up at the resort.”

“But what if we’re late?” Amy wrung her hands and stared out the window, frustrated with the whole situation and with herself. She’d just apologized for being grumpy, but damn if she couldn’t stop her mood from plunging further into darkness. Every minute they spent not traveling to Florida caused her blood pressure to spike and her head to ache. “Seriously, Jake. What’s the plan if we miss our own wedding?”

“Sweetheart, I am ordering you to calm down. Look,” he said, pointing at the road ahead, “we’re almost at the B and B.”

“Would it kill you to be a little upset too? If you keep sitting there as calm as can be, I am going to scream.” Doubts suddenly entered her thoughts, poisoning all the happiness that had filled her in the months since Jake’s proposal. What if he was having second thoughts? Cold feet? What if the canceled flight was a relief to him? She swallowed hard, trying to still those doubts. Her imagination always got the best of her when things didn’t go according to plan.

Once they arrived at Walter’s, he parked the car and turned to loom over her in the seat. The stern look on his face incited flutters in her stomach. “Young lady, if you don’t settle down, I will help you settle down.”

Her breath caught. “And just how will you do that?” A tingle between her thighs pulsed and heated up the longer he stared at her. She grasped his upper thigh and inched her hand toward his crotch, her heart racing with anticipation. “You know, a bed and breakfast in the middle of a Montana snowstorm is kind of romantic. We could…” her voice trailed off, and she gulped past the dryness in her mouth. “You know, consummate our marriage a few days early.”

Jake stiffened and pushed her hand off his leg. “Amy,” he began in a warning tone, “we’ve talked about this many times.”

She groaned inwardly. He was right. They’d talked about it many times, but she still couldn’t get o
ver the fact that in this day and age a man could be so old-fashioned that he’d insist on waiting to bed her until after their wedding ceremony, especially when she was no blushing virgin. Neither was he, though she doubted he’d ever blushed once in his life. “But two days early won’t matter.” She crossed her arms and glared at the snow piling up on the window.

“It matters to me, sweetheart.” He turned her head, tipping her chin up and forcing her to meet his gaze. God, she really loved this man, even though he was frustratingly stubborn sometimes. “I’ve made a lot of mistakes in my life, and darlin’ you were once wronged by the kind of man I used to be,” he said, referring to her ex-husband. “I want to do this the right way. Marriage first. And then”—his voice lowered—“I will make you my wife in every sense of the word.”

Jake knew Amy was frustrated with him, but he wasn’t about to back down. The chemistry between them sizzled, and he knew their first time would be spectacular. He ached to strip her clothes off and sink into the sweetness between her thighs, to fuck her long and hard, over and over again, but he also wanted to be the kind of husband she deserved. Her ex-husband, Cad, had gotten her pregnant when she was a senior in high school, and though he married her after graduation, the scumbag had cheated on her countless times. She’d managed to graduate after attending classes at night, and even managed to hold down a steady job while Cad spent his time gambling and womanizing. After the birth of their second child, another daughter, Amy left Cad and became a single mother at a young age. Her whole life had been a struggle, but she’d persevered. She’d raised two beautiful daughters, and she now owned and operated the most successful flower and gift shop Laurel had ever seen.

Though Jake had never taken up gambling, he had slept around plenty when he was younger, often carelessly. As a result, he had a son with a woman he’d hardly known. They’d gotten married in their early twenties and had tried to make a go of it, but their marriage didn’t last past the two year mark. Jake had settled down after that and focused on raising his son, rarely dating. Gone were his days of womanizing and being the town stud. When he wasn’t spending time with his son, he was building up his home construction business.

Jake doubted Amy would have liked him had they met when they were younger, and that was one of the driving reasons behind his terribly old-fashioned courtship of her. He’d pursued her until she agreed to a date, but he hadn’t done much more than kiss her during the months they’d been seeing each other. He’d made peace with the man he used to be, but that didn’t mean he’d ever stop atoning for his past. This time he’d do it right. Children weren’t in their future—Jake was pushing fifty and Amy had some medical issues that had resulted in her having a hysterectomy two years ago at the age of forty—but that still didn’t change his plans. Marriage first, sex later. Although he couldn’t deny that Amy’s eagerness for him boosted his stupid male ego. He grinned and pulled her close for a quick kiss.

“Let’s run inside. I’ll come out for our suitcases later.” He opened the truck door, letting in a blast of frigid air.

They traipsed through the snow toward the entrance of Walter’s B&B, Amy in the lead. She was huddled in her jacket, walking with her head down and her hood up as the snow drifted down upon them. Suddenly she stopped and bent over, and he upped his pace, worried that she’d gotten stuck in the drifting snow, or perhaps her shoe had filled with snow. In any case, he couldn’t wait to get her inside and warmed up beside the fire. She turned and flashed a mischievous grin at him, and that’s when he noticed three perfectly formed snowballs in her hand. He stopped in his tracks, raising an eyebrow at her while folding his arms across his chest.

“Young lady, don’t you even think about it.”

The first snowball splatted against his arm. He glared at her, daring her to toss another missile his way. He stepped forward as he brushed the white powder off his jacket.

“Throw one more snow ball and I’ll spank your pretty little behind, Amy. I mean it.”

The second snowball landed in the center of his chest, and a giggle erupted from her throat. She held onto the last projectile, a defiant look crossing her face.

“That’s it, young lady. You’ve earned a spanking. Now put that last snowball down.”

“Or what?” she teased, clearly enjoying their banter.

Not one to be one-upped, he took another step in her direction, making sure she saw the seriousness on his face. “Or it will be a bare bottom spanking.”

The third snowball impacted his leg, and he glanced at the remnants of white on his jeans before staring at his naughty little fiancé. He crooked a finger at her and took a deep breath.

“Get your naughty behind inside Walter’s right now. You, little girl, are in so much trouble.”

She winked at him and whispered, “I hope so,” just loud enough for him to hear, before scurrying into the large, log cabin style B&B.

Jake followed her inside, closing the door as the warmth of the cabin surrounded him. He gazed around Walter’s, a renowned tourist attraction because of it was supposedly haunted. Jake knew better though, after Walter drunkenly confessed to spreading rumors of star-crossed lovers ending their lives here back in the sixties. The old man also played recordings of ghost-like noises throughout the night, and a projector hidden in a picture in the upstairs hallway flashed an image of a young woman several times a day. Jake supposed if it brought the tourists in, it was a good thing, even though he found the whole thing silly and a tad dishonest.

“Walter!” Amy called, pressing the bell on the front desk.

Footsteps sounded upstairs, and the old man soon came running down the steps, as spry as a twenty year old despite being in his seventies. He wiped his hands on his overalls and smiled broadly. “What do we have here? I thought you two lovebirds were headed south for a wedding.”

Jake cleared his throat and hugged Amy against him when sadness filled her gaze. “All the roads are either closed or being shut down, and the airport is closed too. We’re hoping the storm ends soon and we can catch a flight tomorrow.”

“Ah,” Walter said, coming to stand behind the desk. His grin widened. “There’s no way you’ll make it home in this weather, even in that monster-sized truck of yours. Do you two lovebirds need a room?” He clasped his hands together. “The honeymoon suite I finished a few weeks ago hasn’t been used yet. I insist you take it. Somebody needs to break it in.”

“That sounds lovely,” Amy said, her hand traveling down Jake’s back. She gave his butt a quick squeeze. “Thanks, Walter.”

“Actually, Walter,” Jake said, bracing himself for Amy’s outburst, “we’d like separate rooms, please. Regular rooms. The honeymoon suite isn’t necessary.”

The old man looked at him as if he’d suddenly grown a second head. “Did I just hear you right?” Walter tapped at his left ear. “Or is my damned hearing aide malfunctioning again?”

“Oh for goodness sake.” Amy blew out a breath.

“Yes,” Jake said. “Separate rooms, please. We aren’t married yet.”

Walter’s eyes went wide and he scratched his head. “You mean you two haven’t…” He looked between them and bent down, lowering his voice. “Really?”

Amy swatted Jake playfully on the arm. “See? Even the crazy old guy who runs the haunted bed and breakfast can’t believe it.”

Jake ground his teeth together as the two of them laughed, Amy apologizing for calling Walter crazy, while Walter joked that he wasn’t crazy as long as he took his pills every day, all one hundred of them. The harder Jake glared, the louder their laughter grew.

“All right, Jake, my man, I can see that you’re serious,” Walter finally said. “Separate rooms it is.”

  Chapter 2

Separate rooms. Dear Lord. Jake was taking his wholesome approach to marriage a little too far. N
one of the men she’d dated since her divorce—not that there had been a lot—had ever been so uptight about having sex. Quite the opposite, in fact. She sighed and sank down on her bed, the door to her room still open as she waited for Jake to bring their suitcases up. He had the room directly across from hers, and she didn’t see what the big deal was. Even if he didn’t want to have sex before they married, couldn’t he at least sleep next to her one night? He’d refused countless times, claiming doing so would be like playing with fire. Well, she liked playing with fire, and she knew exactly what she wanted—Jake naked in bed next to her. She closed her eyes, imagining the feel of his warm skin next to hers. Her nipples tightened, straining painfully against the confines of her bra. How the hell was she supposed to last another two days? And what if they didn’t make it to Florida in time for their wedding and they had to reschedule?

Her sorrow over the uncertainty of it all put a damper on her sensuous thoughts. She made a quick phone call to her daughters, telling them the bad news about their canceled flight. After listening to her daughters lament about Aunt Lola wearing a string bikini on the beach, she urged them to do their best to keep their friends and family happy while everyone awaited her and Jake’s arrival. They agreed, and after she ended the phone called she paced the room until she heard the sound of footsteps on the stairs. A few seconds later, Jake entered with her things, placing her carryon as well as a larger suitcase next to the bed.

“Should we shake hands and say goodnight?” she asked, putting her hands on her hips.
