“She’s pregnant? How? We thought that wasn’t possible.”
“What’s meant to be will happen despite the odds against it. You need to let go of the demon now, I will make sure he never bothers anyone again. I won’t be able to come back after this. Tell Cassie I love her.”
“Of course I will. She loves you too, she talks about you all the time.”
“Time is short, let him go and get back to Cassie.” That’s how he knew I was pregnant before I told him. Leave it to Gram to steal my thunder.
Ragan and I are at the bookstore, sitting on one of the couches supervising the construction of the coffee shop, too bad I won’t be able to drink any for a while yet. We are sitting and talking when we are interrupted and I get up to wait on a customer and I feel a twinge. I stop and put my hand on my belly. Doc says that’s normal, if it keeps up it could be a problem. I tend to panic at everything considering that I wasn’t supposed to be able to get pregnant in the first place, much less carry it to term. I only work a couple hours a day, just enough to get me out of the house for a while. I finish up the transaction and am heading back to the couch when the twinge comes back, much worse than before. I stop and put my hand on my baby, willing everything to OK. Ragan sees the look on my face. “Everything OK, Cassie?”
The pain comes back, doubling me over. “Something’s wrong! Please don’t do this, please don’t take my baby,” I pray.
Ragan helps me over to the couch and makes me lie down as Mel calls Logan and Doc. “Don’t worry, Cassie,” Mel says, trying to reassure me, “I called Logan and Doc. They should be here any minute.”
Logan comes running in, he must have run all the way from the sheriff’s office. He drops to one knee beside me and grabs my hand, “Hey, Darlin’. How you feeling? Is it getting any worse?” He turns and looks up at Mel, trying to keep me from seeing the look of terror on his face. “Is Doc on his way, Mel?”
“Of course, I called him right after you. There’s his car now.”
Doc hurries in, carrying his medical bag. “I’m getting too old for house calls, Cassie. Tell this little one to cool it!”
“Oh believe me, I am. Am I losing the baby Doc?”
“Are you having any bleeding along with the cramping?”
“I don’t know, I’ve been too scared to check.” I am hanging onto Logan’s hand for dear life, willing the baby to be fine.
He checks me over. “Everything looks fine, but better to be safe than sorry. I’m going to call an ambulance and you are going to the hospital for some tests.”
Two hours later I am in a private room with Logan, James, Marie, Adam, and Ragan waiting for Doc to give us the results of all the tests. Logan looks into my eyes and tells me everything will be OK, Gram told him it would be. Doc comes in, smiling. That’s a good sign. “Looks like you’re little one is tough, everything looks good. But, this was a warning. I’m afraid you are on strict bed rest for the duration of this pregnancy. No work whatsoever! I mean it, Cassie. You make sure she stays in bed Logan.”
“But, we’re getting married next week. Can I at least walk down the aisle?”
“You can get married but you will have to do it from your bed. When I say bed rest I mean bed rest. The only time you should be out of bed is to use the bathroom.”
“We’ll make sure she stays put Doc.” Logan is wiping the tears from my face. “See, your Gram was right. Everything will be OK,” he whispers as he holds me close.
“I’m going to get the discharge paperwork going. You should be out of here in about an hour.”
Logan pulls a chair up next to the bed and grabs my hand. “I think you scared ten years off my life, Darlin’. Please don’t do that again.”
“I was so scared Logan. I thought I was losing the baby.”
Logan lifts my hand and kisses it. “This baby will be fine. It’s meant to be.”
James comes over to the bed. “I’m so glad, Reggie. Marie and I will get the wedding plans changed to after your due date.”
“You will not! I am getting married next week even if I have to do it from my bed. I don’t want to wait any longer to be married to Logan than I have to.”
A week later we’re married, with most of the town watching via the internet. Adam was Logan’s best man and Ragan was my maid of honor. James and Marie were there along with Olivia. Adam and Ragan couldn’t take their eyes off each other the whole time, wonder how long it will be before there’s another wedding?
I am following Doc’s instructions to the letter, and I’m going stir crazy. I’m keeping up on the renovation at the bookstore via the internet and they should be opening the coffee bar within the next two weeks.
Logan went back to work full time today, but he’s been stopping at home almost every hour. I’m sure he’s not getting much done. Marie spends most days with me, cleaning the house and getting the baby’s room ready. Ragan is here most days too, just trying to keep my spirits up.
The latest ultrasound confirms what I have thought all along, it’s a girl! We are going to name her Violet after Gram.
One month after the scare Violet gave us, Adam got an emergency phone call from Georgia and he took off without even saying goodbye. He called Logan from the airport, letting him know what was going on. Adam’s ex was killed in a car accident and he needed to go pick up his daughter.
The next day, Ragan is gone. She left in the middle of the night with no explanation. I wonder what happened between her and Adam. Adam was devastated when he got back with his daughter and found that Ragan had gone without saying goodbye. He’s trying to be upbeat for Jenna’s sake but you can see he’s heartbroken. Poor Jenna is so sad, she hasn’t spoken since the accident. Adam has taken her to every specialist within 500 miles. They all tell him that she is fine physically and will talk when she’s ready. It’s a good thing he had already decided to stop touring, Jenna needs him so much right now. I love it when he brings her to see me. I can understand how she feels since I lost my mother at such a young age. Adam is still planning on making Fairfield Corners his full-time home, building a house about 15 minutes south of town. I’m sorry that things didn’t work out between him and Ragan, I thought they were perfect for each other.
Three months later Violet decides it’s time to make her grand entrance, almost four weeks early. Marie and I are at the hospital in Fort Wayne waiting for Logan and James, “Is he here yet? God, he better hurry up or he’s going to miss it!”
“No not yet. He’s trying to get here as fast as he can but it’s really foggy out there, he can’t drive as fast as he wants to.”
Another contraction, they’re getting closer, it’s almost time. He’d better hurry, this baby is ready to be born any minute!
The door opens and James walks in carrying a giant teddy bear. Leave it James to go overboard.
The door opens again and there he is, finally! The love of my life…“OK, Darlin’, let’s do this. I want to meet this little one we created.”
An hour later I am holding our miracle baby in my arms, Logan is asleep in the recliner next to me holding my hand, the gold of his wedding band glinting in the light. I think back to everything we went through to get to this point. My heart skips a beat when I think of how close I came to losing Logan and then to losing Violet. I send up a prayer of thanks to whoever it was that put Logan into my life and made it his destiny to save me.
